Baylor Athletics All-Sports Report: March 13th

A quick recap of Baylor's sports week.


Men’s Basketball • The 11th-ranked Bears fell in the first round of the Big 12 Championships vs. Iowa State, 78-72. • Baylor earned the No. 3 seed in the South bracket and will face off with 14th seeded UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT in Denver. Six-seeded Creighton and 11th seeded NC State will await the winner of the Baylor-UCSB in the second round.

Women’s Basketball • Baylor fell in the first round of the Big 12 Championships last week, with eventual champion Iowa State posting a 74-63 win over the Bears. •BU advanced to its 19th straight NCAA Tournament, earned the No. 7 seed in the Seattle 3 bracket and will face 10th seeded Alabama on Saturday in Storrs, Conn.. The winner will advance to face host and second-seeded UConn or 15th seeded Vermont on Monday.

Baseball • Baylor went 1-3 during a four-game week in its final tune-up for conference play, posting a thrilling midweek win over powerhouse Dallas Baptist before falling in three games vs. Mercer, a team that won 40 games a year ago. • Freshman infielder Kolby Branch continues a torrid start to the season, hitting .344 with six doubles, three homers and 17 RBI through is first 16 collegiate games.

Softball • No. 20 Baylor ventured to California for five games but had two cancelled due to weather. The Bears went 1-2, with an opening win at Cal State Fullerton, before a doubleheader sweep vs. Boston and at Long Beach State on Friday. • The Bears added a doubleheader on Wednesday to make up the two lost games, hosting South Dakota State. BU will host Houston in a three-game set this weekend.

Equestrian • No. 9 Baylor returns to action with the Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Okla., March 24-25, with hopes of advancing tot he NCEA National Championships in Ocala, Fla., on April 13-15. • Dominika Silvestri is 11-2 in Flat on the year, tied for the most Flat wins by a Bear in the last five years.

Men’s Golf • The 22nd-ranked Bears have a pair of tournaments left before Big 12 Championship play, including The Aggie Invitational April 10-11 and the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate April 14-15.

Women’s Golf • No. 10 Baylor will venture to the ASU PING Invitational March 24-26, its final tune-up before Big 12 Match Play in Phoenix, April 7-9. • The Bears had three individuals compete in the Trinity Forest Invite in early March, including two-under finishes from Hannah Karg and Britta Snyder, good for a tie for 14th.

Men’s Tennis • No. 43 Baylor had a two-match swing through Los Angeles cancelled due to rain over the weekend. The Bears were scheduled to face No. 8 Southern Cal and Nevada on Saturday. • The Bears will face off with their 12th and 13th ranked foes through the first 17 matches, hosting No. 22 Illinois and No. 14 Wake Forest this weekend.

Women’s Tennis • No. 40 Baylor opened league play with a pair of stiff tests, fallking vs. No. 34 Oklahoma State in a tight match on Friday, 4-3, before suffering a 6-1 loss vs. No. 20 Oklahoma on Sunday. Freshman Daniella Dimitrov earned a pair of singles wins over the weekend. • BU will hit the road for the Kansas swing this weekend, facing KU on Friday and KSU on Sunday.

Track & Field • The men’s team had its best finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2011- 17th overall with 13 team points. Matthew Moorer (third, 400m), Nathaniel Ezekiel (sixth, 400m) and the men’s 4x400-meter relay (fifth place) earned first team AllAmerica honors. Demar Francis and Mariah Ayers are second team All-Americans. • Matthew Moorer set the program record in the 400 meters in the final round of competition Saturday with a 45.08. That mark is the third-fastest in the world this indoor season. • Baylor opens the outdoor season at the Clyde Hart Classic in Waco, March 24-25. Tickets are on sale now at BaylorBears. com.

Acrobatics & Tumbling • No. 1 Baylor improved to 4-0 with a win at No. 5 Oregon on Wednesday, its 20th straight win. • The Bears have won three of the last five NCATA Specialist of the Week Awards. • BU will host Frostburg State on March 22, the first of a three-meet homestand.
