VCU Transfer Guard Jayden Nunn Commits to Baylor Basketball

WACO, Texas – Former Virginia Commonwealth guard Jayden Nunn has committed to Scott Drew and Baylor Men’s Basketball from the transfer portal per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The 6-foot-4, former Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team selection joins the Bears after two years at VCU where he averaged 9.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 28.5 minutes per game last season as a Sophomore. KenPom lists his usage rate at 16.7% for last year along with a 51.4% effective FG percentage, a 55% true shooting percentage, and a 40% three-point percentage.

Nunn was a three-star prospect rated 89 by 247Sports, good for No. 146 nationally, the No. 21 point guard and the No. 7 prospect in the state of Michigan. He left his home of Flint, Michigan to finish high school at Dream City Christian School in Arizona.

Nunn joins a roster that still has Dantwan Grimes, Langston Love, Josh Ojianwuna, Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua and Caleb Lohner locked in at this moment.

Adam Flagler is in the NBA Draft process and Jalen Bridges is expected to do the same. Whether they return to Baylor is the next question.

Nunn is a great addition to the Baylor program and will look to continue the pedigree of great guards in Waco alongside incoming freshmen Miro Little and Ja’Kobe Walter.

Yves Missi, currently a 2024 commitment at the center position could also reclassify to the 2023 class as well to join the freshman and Nunn as new Bears next season.

Aside from Perry does anyone know who else we're recruiting hard? I thought I heard Avery Anderson as well

On tape looks good! Physically and athletically looks like Bonner, but with offensive skills.

Jumps off the screen. A ton of upside. Would have been the smoothest athlete on the team last year. Just needs time and consistency.

Fits system very well just don't love leaning on all unproven pieces at this level but potential is there. If they roll the dice at guard with what they have, still need a big/swing or two who can rebound and defend with secondary scoring.

Think Nunn would have been the best athlete on last years roster. A bit smoother and more coordinated than Bonner in my view. Walter and Grimes would have also been by far the most athletic player on our team. That's three plus athletes we are adding who all show intensity in their style

While unproven, we've upgraded the guard size and athleticism to a huge degree. Probably the most athletic backcourt in the big 12 next year. Doesn't mean best by any stretch but something to work with

Excited about our backcourt and think overall we might be even better there. Love should improve his lateral agility after another year removed from ACL surgery and a summer to improve his overall game. Love and Miro provide above average positional size at the college level, in addition to Walter and Nunn. Grimes will probably start at PG and I'm excited what he can do after a redshirt year and another summer in the program. Hoping for a Kenny Chery type of impact for us. I think our backcourt is set. Just need another forward to add to the mix with Bridges, and maybe another big to split minutes with Josh O, and we are golden. Not sure if EJ will return and if he does not sure if he will be the same guy but his presence is the program is priceless because he is a walking inspiration and he is like having a coach on the floor.

No idea if this guy is an answer but I like the idea of bigger guards who play defense and drive to the hole.

I still have PTSD from our defense followed by sub 20% 3pt shooting in the last game.

I hope the staff is burning the midnight oil, the roster at the present is an absolute mess. We've lost much more than we've added.

I'm very happy we've contnued to upgrade our guard size with Jayden. Walter actually looks a legit 6-5 or maybe even 6-6 on video (Craw probably knows best). Love has some size. I like the trend.

Welcome aboard, Jayden! VCU finished #15 in adjusted D and you are credited with being one of the defensive stalwarts. Add in the fact you shot well from 3 and we LOVE what we see so far!!!!!!

I'm not sure our roster is a mess. To me, the biggest question right now is whether Bridges returns. If he returns and we get another athletic wing who loves to play defense, I think we will be considerable better than last year. This year's team, as much as I loved them, was, can I say, defensively challenged. Our guards could either score, defend or score like crazy and play a passable point. Cryer, Bonner and Flagler, in that order.

Drew has based his best teams on a nice balance between scoring and defense, with rebounding the forever constant. This team could score when they had a hot shooting night, but defense and rebounding....not so much.

I think Josh O will be a significant upgrade at the 5. We desperately need Bridges to return at the 4/3 depending on matchups and fresh help at the 4. The three guards....Love, Grimes and whoever else, will be immensely more athletic and hopefully buy in to the need for defense to reach another Final Four. This guy and the two freshmen and maybe Missi??? I think that could be pretty darned salty.

Please come back Jalen!

I think Bridges needs another year before the NBA...he could be a double double guy this fall

In 2021 we won over VCU in the Battle 4 Atlantis when Numn was on the team. He played 31 minutes & scored only 6 points. He also had 3 rebounds (defense), 2 assists, 2 steals & 1 turnover.

Some disagreed with me when I posted this a few weeks ago, but I said Cryer and Bridges would be our top scorers this year. Now with Cryer gone I think Bridges will be featured even more and will be our top scoring option. Toward the end of conference play he was starting to show flashes of being able to floor the ball and score in a variety of ways, not just camped out behind the 3 point line. He started to look more and more like an NBA shooting guard and 3/D wing in my eyes. I am hoping the potential to star in this alpha scoring role will lure him back to Waco. I think there's a good chance he declares for the draft without hiring an agent, to get feedback on his game. 2024 he has the upside to be a mid first rounder or late lottery pick if he becomes our alpha scorer which I think he has the potential to be.

If Bridges is our #1 scoring option this fall it is going to be a long season.

We lost Cryer, Flagler, and Keyonte who each averaged around 15 points per game and accounted for 60% of our scoring. Someone will have to step up to fill the offensive void. Maybe one of the new guards? Grimes, Walter, Miro, and Nunn will be terrific but none of them strike me as volume scorers like the guys they are replacing. Bridges scored 10 ppg last season and was a distant 4th option as far as usage. Not a stretch to imagine him averaging around 16 this upcoming season with so much increased usage coming his way.

He's a great get….We still need one more great get at forward.

We had plenty of scorers last year. We didn't have defense or rebounding.

We need a true point guard to get people easier shots. We need to score off of offensive rebounds. We need to get steals and fast breaks. Easy buckets. We didn't get many easy buckets this year, and still beat some really good teams.

The team last year had to shoot contested threes to score effectively, and they often did.

When you get out rebounded and play C- defense and turn the ball over too often, it really doesn't matter how good your shooters are.

Lights out shooting is great. We had that. I'd rather have good, not great shooters, and great defenders and rebounders. Put some opponents on the floor. Strike a little fear.

Don't disagree with any if this. But at the end of the day you gotta put the ball in the basket to win games. I think Bridges is capable of being that guy.

Absolutely true. Steph Curry, anyone? Langston Love at full health, given his size and strength and shooting ability, can score with the best of them. Bridges proved the same late in the year, and could be lethal with more spacing and a distributor at the point. I think we might actually have a bit of an inside game with Josh O. Lohner played better at the end of the season, but he'll always be in a supporting role. A good supporting role.

With all the guys we are losing, this will be a VERY different team. That seems to be true with all power conference teams these days. Coaches are coaching a new group every year. There are SO many unknowns, but I believe, given good health, the upcoming squad will be very athletic, longer, more focused on defense, hungry, capable of much better rebounding, and with more than adequate scoring.

It will be fun to watch.

Ideally, we will have several scoring options: Bridges, Love, Missi, Grimes, Walter, Nunn, Little. Have all of these guys can score at a good clip abc defend well, we will be looking pretty good.

As noted, we need to rebound as a team. It would be wonderful if Lohner & 1-2 of the other guys could develop a Mark Vital mentality & go after the ball whenever they are on the floor. No one will ever replace Mark but the more players who emulate his ball hawk skills the better. He is still fun to watch!

I agree, team rebounding will need to carry us with our 3 guard lineup and Bridges more of a finesse player at the stretch 4. Keyonte was a great rebounding guard despite his other flaws, so we will need to replace that with the new guys. Lohner is easily our best rebounder. If he could improve his situational awareness and shore up his deficiencies on both ends of the floor he could contribute with his knack for rebounding. I am hoping our coaches work their developmental magic with him this offseason so he could provide 10-12 bench hustle minutes without hurting the team elsewhere.

Was told Love is still wearing eye protection. So sounds like there was some type of damage and hopefully this fully heals. Don't know how much an impact that will have
