Italian forward Maikcol Perez has committed to Baylor. He joins Tounde Yessoufou‍, Andre Iguodala II‍ and Ramon “Mayo” Soyoye in the 2025 recruiting class, which is moving toward a top-10 ranking in the nation.

The 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward played for Orange1 Bassano in Italy and averaged 8.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game during international play.

Perez shined over the summer in the 2024 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup, posting 14.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the championship game against Team USA and was selected to the All-Tournament team.

In the Euro U16 Championship last year, he averaged 12.7 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists over the seven-game tournament, helping Italy to a second-place finish.

Perez will turn 18 on December 1, 2025, and is rated the No. 41 overall prospect and a four-star recruit in the On3 2025 rankings.

Why The Fit Looks Good

Perez will remind Baylor fans of Jeremy Sochan. He’s not as bouncy as Sochan, but he has similar traits coming to college. He’s a versatile defender with a 7-foot-0 wingspan. He has excellent basketball IQ, ball handling and playmaking skills. He could be a guy like Sochan, who Baylor uses to initiate offense in half-court sets. He is a good rebounder. The big question mark, like Sochan, is shooting. The theme continues of getting versatile, long, athletic players that will give the Bears a lot of options offensively and defensively.

I think all fans would love to go back to that. Unfortunately I see near 100% roster turnover every season until the system changes.

Why doesnt houston have this problem?
I've been asking the same thing. Mitch predicted they would lose 4-5 and I think its only been 1-2.. on a very crowded roster. And they do Not pay top dollar.. decent but not what some of their guys would get in market. I think its an emotional tie that Sampson has pulled off that this program can't seem to replicate.

one would think that a national championship would help Baylor.. I also think that Scott Drew lost some really key assistant coaches the last few years; and that has played a key part (in my opinion) as to our lack luster success since the natty

They have lost 5 key contributors (arguably 4, as Mylik Wilson was probably their 9th player in the rotation), and Uzan is on the fence. What do you mean they've lost 1-2?

Transfers.. nobody of significance has transferred other than a wing that just hasn't been very good post injury. Sampson has a very strange pull on their guys. They barely even test the mkt.

And as for the pg, would be surprised if he didn't return. Dude has a pull on these guys while our pg's family was shopping the guy halfway through the season. Uzan isn't even looking around if he withdraws. It's pretty crazy

I suggest you go back and read what I actually said, then.

Everyone was talking about their crazy continuity season-over-season, and I said that ends after this past season, because they are losing 4-5 of their top contributors, and their team next year is going to be pretty heavily reliant on guys who are likely one-and-done in the program. Nothing that's happened this off-season changes my view.

I get you but it said you would look for 2-3 entries within the next few weeks and it was crickets outside of the wing.

I know Drew expected everyone to be scrambling but an ornery 70 yr old is retaining guys while paying slightly above avg at best.

I said no such thing. Just that they were losing a significant portion of their team. They did, and will even further if Uzan doesn't withdraw from the draft. (He had a crappy combine, so it sounds like he might pull his name out.)

I didn't make any predictions about transfer portal, because I have no inside info about their program. You're either confusing me with somebody else, or you're projecting because you have a weird preference for a coach who's never won a championship over our coach, who curbstomped Sampson on the way to his Natty.

I don't like the guy and his offensive coaching kind of sucks and always has.

But he's figuring out this game when Drew clearly said in the interview y'all were touting that you shouldn't expect them to do it in the future. That was incorrect.

Now the exception doesn't change the overall point but it's not a great contrast.
