Predicting the 2019 Big 12 Season: Week 5

The ultimate tailgate package for Baylor’s 2019 season!

Big 12 finally has a full week of conference action. A couple of major statements are made during week five.

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 Week 4

Week 5

Texas Tech 27 , Oklahoma 59 (Norman)

Both of these teams come in undefeated with some high hopes for the season. The Red Raiders are a surprise so far as they have started off 3-0 but they have not played a team with the talent level of Oklahoma. The Sooners offense hums all day long through the air and on the ground as they rack up over 600 yards of total offense. Jalen Hurts hits CeeDee Lamb for two touchdowns and Lee Morris catches another. Hurts, Brooks, and Sermon all run in touchdowns. Alan Bowman throws for over 300 yards and has three touchdowns but also turns the ball over three times. The Sooners roll in a big way and make its first statement of the season.

Kansas State 24 , Oklahoma State 31 (Stillwater)

The Pokes are coming off a loss in Austin and the Wildcats are coming off a bye. I expect this to be a very tight game. Spencer Sanders connects with Landon Wolf for an early touchdown but the Wildcats answer with a Skylar Thompson rushing touchdown. This trend continues as both offenses score three times in the first half but the second half is a different story. Both teams turn the ball over twice and they go scoreless in the 3rd and head to the 4th with a tie game at 21-21. They both add field goals before Spencer Sanders connects with Tylan Wallace on a 40-yard touchdown strike. The Cowboys add a field goal late to secure the victory.

Kansas 13 , TCU 27 (Fort Worth)

This game has revenge written all over it since the Horned Frogs became the first Big 12 team since Texas in 2016 to lose to Kansas a season ago. TCU’s defense plays very well in this one as they hold the Jayhawks to only six points in the first half and force three first half turnovers. Darius Anderson hits a 40-yard touchdown run and Alex Delton finds Taye Barber for a touchdown. KU finds some success in the run game with Pooka Williams and Khalil Herbert as they lead the Jayhawks to a touchdown drive in the 3rd quarter to keep the game close. But the Frogs hold Kansas to zero again in the 4th as they pull away.

Iowa State 21, Baylor 31 (Waco)

This is going to be one heck of a matchup between two undefeated teams that should finish in the top half of the conference. Charlie Brewer vs. Brock Purdy becomes the storyline as both offenses have good days. Brewer throws three touchdown passes. Tyquan Thornton, Jared Atkinson, and Trestan Ebner catch the passes. On the other side, Brock Purdy runs in a touchdown and throws for two more. Charlie Kolar and Deshaunte Jones come down with the passes. The game is tied in the 4th till JaMycal Hasty gets free for a 20-yard touchdown run. The Bears are able to add a field goal in the quarter as well to seal the deal as the Baylor defense holds the Cyclones scoreless in the 4th.

I see this game this as the defining game the season. A win will show they are among the top half of the conference, but a loss probably puts them in the bottom half. Baylor will probably go into this game at 3-0. With a win here they will have momentum going to Kansas State. My gut tells me that they will either win both those games or lose both. If they lose, I think they can only depend on beating Texas Tech and Kansas and may finish 5-7. But with a win, I think they go on to beat @ KSU, v. TT, @ KU and finish at least 7-5. The games v. WV and @ TCU are also strong possibilities.

Last year Baylor lost 14-28 @ Iowa State, who finished 8-5. Iowa State dropped out of the rankings in the final poll last year after losing to Washington State in the Alamo Bowl, but they were ranked in weeks 10-15 and only lost to 8-5 WSU by 2 points. Their QB is returning and they have high expectations for their 4 star RB. Sporting News has them ranked #23 in their pre-season rankings.

This will be a tough game, but I will be coming out from SoCal to provide my support, and that will be the difference maker. My prediction, Baylor wins and goes on to finish 8-4 before going to a bowl.

I like our chances of being undefeated through week 5. That would garner some attention for ole BU!
