Ten Things: West Virginia

October 31, 2019

Baylor and West Virginia squared off Thursday October 31. Here are the ten things that stuck out during the game.

  1. Khalil Keith‍ started his first game and had a rough first quarter
  2. Prayers up for Denzel Mims‍ as that was a rough helmet to helmet hit
  3. Trick play was no treat.
  4. Defense is playing lights out in the first half
  5. Chris Miller has to play smarter
  6. A sloppy start to the second half
  7. Charlie Brewer needs to throw the ball away
  8. Mental mistakes all night
  9. Thank you blocked kick team
  10. Tyquan Thornton‍ is a stud
  11. Can't be 15-0 until you're 8-0

There is no doubt there was some terrible offensive line play tonight, but some of those sacks were Charlie's fault. He held the ball too long several times. And a couple of others took losses when they could have been thrown away.

I can't think of a QB in college ball I'd take over Charlie, but he could improve in that area.

11. Our O line was exposed all night
12. If the OL keeps playing that badly we will likely only win 1 or possibly (it's a stretch) 2 more.
13. That kind of OL play will get us beat down by Texas and Oklahoma, possibly TCU.

This week's targeting call on Chris Miller was complete bull*****

Chris was going for tackle and the QB slid under him and the hit was glancing not full bore.

Not only that, but it looked Chris' arm hit his head.

11. Baylor held West Virginia to 14 yards total rushing

12. W Virginia did not have even one sustained scoring drive. One score came when the receiver got behind the defenders and the other was on a kick return.

13. It's very hard to be up for every opponent. Ask OU after they lost to Kansas State, but Baylor did not lose last night.

Actually, it was more a result of Miller's recent past coming back to haunt him. Officials pay a lot of attention to players suspected of dirty play, and the crew would have been well aware of Miller's two prior targeting fouls.

Safety is the top priority for officials, so if Miller did anything that looked like targeting, it was going to be flagged. Worse, Miller's hit included him lowering his helmet as the WV QB gave himself up.

Miller really needs a clean game against TCU OU, or things will get even worse for him later in the season. It's hard to get rid of a "headhunter" tag.

So I saw where someone said Miller has to sit the entire TCU game because last night was his third "targeting" call. Is this true? I've never heard of that rule.

Yes, unfortunately Miller is out for the entire TCU game. It's an automatic 1 game suspension for his 3rd targeting penalty.

Was that actually targeting, or does Miller just get called because he has that reputation now and refs are looking for it?

Seemed like the QB slid way too late an ducked into the path of the helmet. I'm not sure what else one can do.

They also said it was a late hit. I don't know how it could be late when he wasn't down. You can't stop your momentum with some kind of magic when the qb doesn't start to slide until he's getting hit.

Refs made the same call on the late hit on Charlie (that was offset by holding): apparently any contact after the QB begins his slide is called a late hit. Even though the WV defender hit Charlie's helmet (it was after he was all the way on the ground) no targeting called.

Miller's hit looked more like the WV QB was trying to do the limbo and hit Miller's arm as he went down.
