MBB Podcast & Reaction Thread: Washington 67 Baylor 64

Baylor falls to Washington 67-64 after holding a double digit lead for a lot of the game.  The Bears are now 1-1.  The Bears next game is 11/15 against Texas State in Waco.

Such a frustrating game down the stretch.  Young talent has beaten experience in 3 match-ups this year across the college basketball landscape.  Duke/Kansas; Kentucky/Michigan State; Washington/Baylor.

Here are my takeaways

Positives

  • Controlled the game for 35 minutes.  Up 63-53 at 5:35 mark.  Freddie Gillespie was a stat sheet stuffer, he played his butt off.  Jared Butler was extremely efficient minus the 4 turnovers.  Loved how we competed overall.
  • Forced 20 turnovers from Washington; 14 offensive rebounds
  • Washington has two probable lottery picks and a top 10 roster from a talent perspective and we are right there with them.

Needs Improvement

  • Defense and offense just finished the game poorly.  Reminded me of the Georgia State NCAA tournament game where we just had some easy opportunities at the rim to put the game away and didn’t do it.
  • Tristan Clark was tentative.  This is a big punch in the mouth for him.  How will he respond?  We obviously need him to be good to win games against these types of teams.
  • Outside of Jared Butler (4-6), we shot it poorly from 3 (4-15 for others on the team).
  • We should be one of the best teams in the nation at not turning it over with experienced players and guards.  We have a ways to go there.

Outlook

  • Tough loss and long flight back to Texas.  Need to learn and grow from it and win the rest of these non conference games before conference play starts.
