#1 Baylor (23-1; 12-0) dismantles #14 West Virginia (18-7; 6-6) in Waco, Texas without Macio Teague (sprained wrist).  The Bears were led by Jared Butler with 21 points.  Matthew Mayer and Davion Mitchell each chipped in 13 points.  Next up for the Bears is a trip to OU Tuesday.

Five Observations

-- Elite defense when it mattered.  With 10 minutes to go in the game, Baylor led West Virginia 53-25.

– Great performances from Davion Mitchell and Jared Butler on both ends of the floor.  34 points; 8 rebounds and 13 assists between them.

– Matthew Mayer was terrific off the bench- 13 points; 8 rebounds and only one turnover.

– Freddie Gillespie and Tristan Clark played terrific interior defense holding Oscar Tshiebwe and Derek Culver to 14 points on 15 field goal attempts and turning them over 9 times.

– Great team win, Vital and Bandoo also made big contributions.  Thamba gave some good minutes off the bench as well.

Mayer's rebounds stuck out to me. That is an area that has struggled with in the past. To grab 8 against a good rebounding team with size like WVU is impressive. Good job on his part mixing it up and hitting the boards.

If Mayer played at a school like Tulsa or Pepperdine or Sam Houston he might average 35.

If given the absolute green light and played 35 minutes, he might average 35.

Pete Maravich.

Sure glad he's being brought along the right way.

Next 2 years will be fun to see him develop. Playing man on an elite defensive team will serve him well in the long run.

Matt's ball handling and passing skills are really damn good for his size. His shoot selection has improved so much just from the beginning of this season. Love watching him at the top of the free throw line passing down low to Freddie, you can't stop it...just a huge mismatch for almost every team. Again...he has to reign it in, but I can see him averaging 18-20 a game by his senior year. Also, not sure on his FT stats, but seems pretty automatic.
