Baylor (1-4) is back on the road again to face off against Texas Tech (2-5) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CT in a game that will be aired on FS1.

Baylor vs. Texas Tech Primer

A year after a controversial ending to the 2019 contest between Baylor and Texas Tech in Waco, the Bears hit the road to Lubbock in what will be a game that could be the turning point for both programs in 2020.

After a season opening victory over Kansas, the Bears have struggled to find consistency in the stretch of four-straight losses that followed. As for the Red Raiders, Matt Wells’ teams has seen it all: a very close call to Houston Baptist, an overtime loss to Texas after having a 15-point lead with 3:13 remaining in regulation and blow out losses to Iowa State, Oklahoma and TCU. Oh, and a random win over West Virginia right in the middle.

But the paths to the current records have been quite different. While Baylor has worked through a scheme change on offense and defense under new head coach Dave Aranda while dealing with three game cancellations and postponements because of COVID, Tech has struggled under their second-year head who has tried to build on a 4-8 2019 season that was scalped by four losses by three points or less.

That included a double-overtime loss to the Bears where a fumble that was recovered by the Red Raiders in the first extra period was ruled an illegal snap. If both teams were in the position they had hoped this fall, that specific play would likely be getting much more attention leading up to kickoff.

The internal issues for both programs at this juncture in the season are more pressing, however. While Texas Tech plans to play two quarterbacks against the Bears tomorrow, Aranda’s defense will be dealing with the challenge of replacing their leading rusher and their best defender, Sqwirl Williams and Terrel Bernard, who were both lost for the season due to injury last Saturday against Iowa State.

Needless to say, something has to give for the teams that have a combined record of 3-9.

Baylor vs. Texas Tech Prediction

Written by Sam Bradshaw (S11)

Neither team is looking strong this year but both are probably 3-4 win teams in a “normal” year at this point.  Both teams have dynamic skill guys, inconsistency at QB, and line issues.   One team forces turnovers, doesn’t massively lose the field position battle, and shows more ability to impact the opposing offense.

Baylor wins one that’s close.

Baylor 34, Texas Tech 30

I think we have more in common than we don't. Including age.

I just think our team is getting sorry coaching.

And I appreciate your comment regarding Team Briles. No one, and I mean no one, is a stronger member of that team than me. I'll never get over that, but I've learned the hard way to just let it go.

Burying the hatchet.

Time to head over to the BB boards. Wish I could follow here but not wasting anymore time watching Charlie struggle, and this staff showing no interest in working our other QBs in there to get real game experience to move us to the future, cuz Charlie isn't the future

I don't know if the coaching is sorry, but for winning games right now it's not looking good.

Next year, maybe the things they have been coaching look a bit better, like they did progressively under Rhule.

I don't like the current situation. I don't think this staff wanted or expected this to be a losing team. They need to make some adjustments going forward, so we'll see what happens.

Rhule had a plan to get rid of Art's players and replace and build with his own. Aranda and Fedora are just incompetent so far in evaluating and utilizing our O talent.

No he didn't...the roster would have looked very different if that was what he was really doing.

That game had two strange plays that stick with me days later.

First the play where watching in real time I thought safety.
Second the play where I thought Charlie would easily score a TD and he got stopped short and we kicked a FG.

Thank goodness Rhule didn't run Mims, Lynch, Hasty, Strickland, Porter, Tecklenburg, Johnston, Houston, Black, Platt, Matisck, and Roy off. As for second sentence, agree frustrating season. However, COVID, new coaches, limited practice, etc., has affected all programs. Excluding Muschamp, current football coaches can rationalize this season away. I'll turn the other cheek this year. Do I like it - no. I can't complain. So far only wager lost was TCU. Guess one could say, Aranda and Fedora have made for easy bets. Life is good, just some days are better than others.

Art's players provided the road map to the Panther gig. Without them Aranda and Fedora would be elsewhere.

You seriously think Rhule left us talent on the OL?

Who said anything about the OL? However, we have almost everyone bank from the O side of the ball.

It all starts up front on both sides of the ball. Rhule never had a quality OL while at Baylor and left very little talent at that position. Briles and Clements took a Fireman from Canada and made him a 1st Round pick.

Briles ability to pick talent for skill positions was second to none. But never forget RG3 was recruited to UH and only came to us because of Art. For some reason it has always been difficult to recruit players ranked four and five stars to Waco.

Were Briles still coaching here, we would by this time be seeing 4 and 5 stars in quantity. Things were already trending that way, on both sides of the ball, when BU football was imploded in 2016. The criticism that so many in his final recruiting class didn't pan out at other schools conveniently factors out his extraordinary ability to develop and motivate players and the esprit de corps that characterized our teams during those years.

Was Mond a Briles recruit? My guess is yes. Look where Mond has aggy today.

It took Mond until his Sr season to get aggy there. If things hadn't changed in 2016 we would have been loaded at QB...Steadham, Smith and Mond. Mond would have had time and competition to make him better...plus the Quarterback Whisperer.

Mond was a BU commit for '17 as was WR Jhamon Ausbon when everything blew up in May of '16. And yes, we were really just starting to fully reap the benefits of CAB's success from a recruiting standpoint as far as attracting significant numbers of 4 and 5 star type recruits when we needlessly decided to blow own brains out and completely destroy the collegiate career of a great coach that didn't deserve it. Had we not done that I have little doubt we would annually be getting at least a decent number of 4 and 5 star types and given the way CAB won back to back B12 titles with mostly developed 2 and 3 star types, who knows where we would be today.

Let's not forget that Devin Duvernay was also a Briles commit. It took Duvernay long enough but he finally blew up his Sr year at UT.

How long would it have taken him at BU under CAB?

Hard to say. We had plenty of great receivers under Briles (Wright, Williams, Reese, Goodley, Coleman, Cannon, etc) & we had some who under performed (Hall, Jones). Some might argue that Platt & Zamora belong in the second list.

Actually, given the frequency with which CAB's teams in the later years ran off and hid scorewise, allowing him to play even freshmen in late stages of games, it's easy to say. Way, way before his senior year.

Duvernay would have been a better college player under Briles. But he left Texas more equipped for the NFL than he would have been at Baylor under Briles.
