When and where did you live in Americus, GA?
Where did your father work in Americus?
(I don't recall many jobs for exploration geologists in SW Georgia.)
There's a bauxite mine in Andersonville (where the infamous Civil War prison camp was located), which he commuted to. He was a mineral geologist, working for American Cyanimid. He also worked for them in Rome, GA; the bauxite mine was in Adairsville. Over the course of his career, he also worked for companies mining zinc, copper, potash, gold and uranium. When we lived in Denver, he spent a lot of time exploring in Alaska.
I was born in New York because he was working at the Lamont Geological Laboratory to map the ocean floor using sonar.
Here's a summary of that project, which involved a woman geologist. Women weren't allowed to work aboard ocean vessels at that time, so guys like my dad (who had been in the navy during WWII) went out on the boats to gather data.
We lived in Americus from 1966 to 1969. In 1970, Sumpter County was the last county in the U.S. to integrate its schools fully.
My father found one of his ancestors buried at Andersonville.
