Todd Archer ESPN Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texas -- At 7-6, the Dallas Cowboys are in the playoff chase, albeit barely, but it's never too soon to think about next spring's NFL draft.

ESPN Insider Todd McShay released his first mock draft on Wednesday and he had the Cowboys selecting defensive tackle Christian Wilkins.

Wilkins is 6-foot-4, 300 pounds. He has 47 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and 10 pressures. He has filled just about every defensive stat line.

In McShay's write up he mentions the Cowboys have to bolster the interior of their defensive line. He mentions Wilkins would be more of a 3-technique than a nose tackle. The Cowboys have played David Irving at the 3 technique with some success but he is probably more suited to play defensive end. If Stephen Paeahad not been lost for the season with a knee injury, then Maliek Collinswould have handled the 3-technique spot this year after a productive rookie season.

So do the Cowboys need another under tackle? That can be debated. They have clearly not valued the need for a nose tackle, getting by with guys like Nick Hayden, Terrell McClain and Paea over the last few years.

But a quote in this terrific feature on Wilkins stood out to me about how he would fit in the Cowboys' scheme, provided the Cowboys are actually running the same defense in 2018, from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney:
Quote:

"It's like a switch-hitter in baseball, a guy that can hit 25 home runs right-handed and left-handed," Swinney said. "There's nobody else that can go and play 3-technique, shade and end, and not miss a beat. Plus, you've got to have the mentality for it. I've been around some ends who could go play D-tackle, but they didn't really have the mentality for it. I've been around a lot of really good D-tackles but maybe not quite athletic enough to go play D-end. He is a rare guy."
Ah, the great position flexibility asset the Cowboys almost always rave about.

The Cowboys have committed high draft assets over the years on the defensive line. Tyrone Crawford was a third-round pick in 2012. DeMarcus Lawrence was a second-rounder in 2014. They took Randy Gregory in the second round in 2015. They took Collins in the third round in 2016. Taco Charlton was a first-round pick in 2017.

There will be a lot of questions to be answered in the future, like the contracts for Lawrence (unrestricted free agent) and Irving (restricted free agent), but for now selecting Wilkins would make sense for the Cowboys.

Linebacker Sean Lee was back on the injury report Friday with a back injury and is listed as questionable for the game. Lee returned from a three-game absence last Sunday with a dominant 20-tackle performance that included a game-sealing interception against the Giants. Assuming he can play through another injury this week, next up for Lee and the defense: Oakland star running back Marshawn Lynch, who's back with his hometown Oakland Raiders this season after a brief retirement. One of this era's toughest, most productive backs, Lynch has faced Lee and the Cowboys many times before when he played for Seattle. "It was everything you could do to try to bring him down," Lee recalled. "You have to keep your feet alive, you have to do everything, because he can run through arm tackles. Even when you're set, he can run through it." Lynch has 619 rushing yards this season, along with 7 touchdowns, and he's averaging 6.8 yards per carry in Oakland's last two games. "Moving extremely well, running through people. He's one of the best to ever do it," Lee said. "It's going to take the entire defense to stop him. When you tackle him, you can't have one guy."

so we needed Bears to beat Lions. didnt happen. Panthers to beat Pack (with Rodgers) - they did.

Now, Rams over Seahags and Bucs over Falcons

Bears over Lions - no
Panthers over Packers - yes
Rams over Seahawks (Rams up 6-0 right now)
Bucs over Falcons (MNF)

Aaron Rodgers blitzed THIRTYONE times by the Panthers today. Carolina forced him into 3 INTs and 3 sacks

So the only team that is in now that we probably have a shot is the Falcons.

REMAINING OPPONENTS: at Buccaneers (4-9), at Saints (10-4), vs. Panthers (10-4)

Next up are the Seahawks who we can eliminate next week after they lose today

REMAINING OPPONENTS: vs. Rams (9-4), at Cowboys (7-6), vs. Cardinals (6-8)

Then the Lions who I think will probably beat out the Falcons for that last spot:

REMAINING OPPONENTS: at Bengals (5-9), vs. Packers (7-7)

Then us:

REMAINING OPPONENTS: at Raiders (6-7), vs. Seahawks (8-5), at Eagles (12-2)

None of this matters if we lose any of these games. Thinking the Eagles may rest their starters the last game since they won today. One game ahead of Vikings for home field throughout. Not sure of who would get it if they tie with the Vikings

Which would be good for us if we go into that last game with a shot - and they rest starters

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith (back) is active for Week 15 against the Raiders.

Smith and La'el Collins (back) will both play through questionable tags. The Cowboys inactives are WR Brice Butler, CB Orlando Scandrick, RB Trey Williams, LB Justin Durant, DL Lewis Neal, TE Blake Jarwin and DL David Irving.
