Crawford suffered the injury chasing down Ezekiel Elliott on a run, with their legs getting tangled and Elliott inadvertently stepping on the defensive lineman's right ankle. Crawford immediately grabbed for his lower leg and was tended to instantly.

He was in obvious pain as he left the field. A source said the hope is it is not broken, but Crawford left for a local hospital for X-rays.

Cowboys LE Tyrone Crawford suffered a "lateral" ankle sprain in Tuesday's practice and is week to week.
Crawford stepped on the back of Ezekiel Elliott's foot in a live drill and rolled his ankle badly, needing a cart to take him off the field. The initial fear was a fracture, but Crawford is only expected to be down for the next few weeks and has a chance to play Week 1. Crawford is more of an edge-setter against the run.

With Looney out with a toe injury and C Green perpetually out with something another, the vet signee Byron Bell will open at LG in Sat game. He's been huge his whole career at around 6'5, 360. Last weight check he was down to 310. The kid has 72 starts in the NFL so he has a few skins

Also former high #1 pick Jonathan Cooper is being tested at LG and backup at RG

Friggin ankles can affect him all year long. Not much you can do about that kind of sprain in the short term but a bit of therapy. Keeping the weight off it would be best but not sure thats doable given the season coming up

cant argue with that. Hardwood is a lot worse on the ankles than any of today's surfaces.

We played twice in the Astrodome when it had the early Astroturf. Basically full nylon blades over concrete floor. Hard as a rock, and the turfburns were the worst. And everybody had ankle problems after the game. You couldnt really plant and cut fast, probably why a thudder like Earl Campbell was so successful on it. They should have invented the term "breaking ankles" back then!

Cowboys have signed punter Chris Jones to a four-year contract extension through the 2021 season. Terms were not disclosed.

Jones, who had one year remaining on his deal, set a career high last season with a 45.9-yard punt average, including a 66-yarder that dribbled out of bounds at the Eagles' 1-yard line in the regular-season finale. He now has the all-time highest percentage of punts downed inside the 20-yard line (39.9 percent) in team history.

Jones' most memorable play was a de-cleating hit on Detroit Lions punt returner Andre Roberts in Week 16. He also showed he could gain yardage as well as stop forward progress: his 30-yard run on a fake punt in Week 8 was the fourth-longest run by an NFL punter in 30 yards and set up a field goal in the Cowboys' overtime win over the Eagles.

The one-on-one pass rush drills have once again become interesting now that Malik Collins is back at practice. Collins is the one player that gives Zack Martin issues. When those two match up, it's usually 50-50 on who is going to win the battle. On Tuesday, Martin was able to get the best of Collins with two solid sets by neutralizing his power. Martin was able to get his hands quickly inside and just sit his weight down on the block in order to keep Collins for pushing him back.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the league could announce a decision in its Ezekiel Elliott investigation as early as Friday. Per Rapsheet, "clarity" is expected "soon." Although not unprecedented by NFL standards, the Zeke saga has been drawn out far too long. Anything from a slap on the wrist to a four-game suspension appears to be a possibility.

Cowboys WR Brice Butler has a sprained foot. The team is seeking a second opinion. The speed demon was the team's No. 4 receiver last season, and is slated for a similar role in 2017.

"Multiple sources" have told NFL Network's Jane Slater that Ezekiel Elliott's suspension will be "closer" to or at six games. Slater's colleague, Ian Rapoport, reports the "benchmark" is six games, which is standard for all domestic violence cases. It could be more or could be less, so this really doesn't give us much at the moment. However, an announcement from the league is expected to come down the chute on Friday. Darren McFadden would figure to be next in line, though Alfred Morris looked like the far superior back in the preseason opener.

It may derail Zeke getting into midseason form in time to be at top form heading into the playoffs though, since he won't be available at all until midseason.

League did not accuse Elliott of tampering or destroying evidence as was rumored

Darren is an excellent overall back. Obviously not Zeke, but he''s solid. Morris is a great one cut runner. Lousy receiver and so-so blocker.

Who's up past that? Rod Smith? Keith Smith? Both will probably stay on the roster as they can play special teams and backup RB.
