This would not be good:

According to Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, "just about everybody believes" free agent LB Anthony Hitchens will sign with the Colts. Indy beat writers have hinted at this, as well; new Colts DC Matt Eberflus was Hitchens' position coach in Dallas. A solid run stopper with experience at all three linebacker positions, Hitchens typically came off the field on passing downs as a Cowboy. He would play middle linebacker in the Colts' new 4-3.

The Cowboys slotted a major contract into their 2018 salary cap this week with DeMarcus Lawrence signing his one-year, $17.143 franchise tag and on Wednesday, the club created some extra cap space by releasing defensive end Benson Mayowa.

In 2016, the Cowboys signed Mayowa to a three-year deal worth roughly $8 million. He led the defense with six sacks last year but posted only one last season with fewer defensive snaps in 14 games (2 starts).

The move should open up nearly $3 million with free agency set to open March 14. The Cowboys are currently just under the cap even with Lawrence's sizable tag total.

The Cowboys also released veteran defensive tackle Joe Vellano.

As they have in recent years, the front office has options to build more cap space. They could choose to restructure a contract or two from their current roster. They're also hopeful to get a long-term deal done with All-Pro guard Zack Martin, which presumably could lower his cap hit in 2018.

Todd McShays mock:

19. Dallas Cowboys
Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama*
Payne's sack total is underwhelming (three total in college), but just turn on the tape. He's a highly disruptive player in the middle and would help Dallas' effort to upgrade the Cowboys' pass rush (38 sacks last year was a big improvement). Payne would be a good fit as a 3-technique in Rod Marinelli's system, and would pair well with DeMarcus Lawrence (franchise tagged). With Jason Wittenturning 36 this offseason, TE Dallas Goedert is another good option.

No homer, but I think Rico has a chance to be Witten's replacement. They put him on IR for a year for a reason (unrelated to injury)

I have no problem being a homer here. I would love to see him do it. But also very concerned about his neck and jaw which appeared to be the lingering issue. Not good for an open space blocker to have a neck injury

ex cowboy stuff:

Free agent DE Benson Mayowa will visit the Redskins on Tuesday. The Cowboys cut Mayowa to save cap space earlier this week. Mayowa led Dallas with six sacks in 2016 but only recorded one last season. After playing defensive end in the Cowboys' 4-3 scheme, Mayowa would likely shift to outside linebacker if he signed with Washington.

So, we retain DLaw. Hopefully work out an extension with Zach Martin.

I dont see a way to keep Anthony Hitchens. A shame. Has really developed. Hes too solid and will make one heck of a contract. We should get a nice comp pick for him.

As bad as Chaz Green is, he is under contract - Bell will leave unlee he comes a vet min. Then we can move on from Green.

I really like Alfred Morris. But with Zeke back, he can find a team where he has a bigger role - and that can afford to pay him.

Butler - too much of a one trick pony. Makes great catches but too infrequently. Cowboys will draft a WR high. hes gone. Same hope as above

Cooper will stay and probably keep the LG spot.

Irving - we second round tender him at $2.91. Could backfire, $4.19 is first round tender. Since we didnt draft him - no comp either way. He is coming off injuries and and a big suspension. Two red flags for other teams. However if I had a lot of cap room like say, the Titans, I would grab him in a heartbeat.

If they second round tender Irving, then they want the pick, not the player.

Correct, which is why they didn't give me a first round tender...no one will bite on a first.

In essence this is a backdoor trade.

I just dont think there are enough quality OGs in this draft for us to get one. Quenton Nelson wont last too us. Wil Hernandez is a reach at 19 - maybe at 2. Not as high on Wynn form Georgia, then maybe Corbett from Nevada or Braden Smith in the 3rd/4th from Auburn. Big OG talent gap after the top few

Just not sure that anyone will offer much more than we will to keep him (vet min plus bonus, like last year). He started to look like an NFL OG towards the end of the season.

I think everyone tries to beat him up too much. He's going to play in our league and be a decent starter." - -AFC team personnel executive

Well given no trade down, he was the top pick on the board with a lot of CBs and WRs, in which case I do draft him for LT and move Collins back to RG and I should be set at OL for years to come.

Two days before the official start of free agency, the Cowboys have re-signed defensive tackle Brian Price to a two-year contract. Price, an exclusive rights free agent, appeared in the first eight games last season, totaling eight tackles and three quarterback pressures. The Cowboys placed him on injured reserve in November with a knee injury suffered against the Chiefs. The Cowboys originally claimed Price off waivers from the Packers in September to provide defensive line depth after the team parted ways with veteran Cedric Thornton.
