WACO, Texas – Baylor football sophomore Blake Shapen has been named to the 2022 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list, as announced Tuesday at the annual Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler East Texas Kick-off Luncheon.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity to persist as well as determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

Additionally, the nominee must either be born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school, or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year university.

Shapen, a Shreveport, La., native, was the 2021 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player after setting a Big 12 Championship and AT&T Stadium (collegiate games) record with 17-straight completions. He finished the game with 23 completions, 180 yards and three touchdowns in helping the Bears defeat No. 7 Oklahoma State for the league’s title.

The third-year sophomore was named Baylor’s starting quarterback following spring practice and enters the 2022 season with 596 career passing yards and five touchdowns. He has completed 72% of his passes and has yet to throw an interception in his six career games played.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list will be narrowed down to no more than 16 semifinalists in November, and then up to five finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 11, 2023, where the winner will be announced.

Historically, former Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty won the first Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in 2013, and most recently former running back Abram Smith was named a finalist for the honor in 2021.
