Why not just have a 64-team, 4 division (regional) NFL-prep league and cut out all this voting nonsense? Completely remove the emotional bias from the equation.
This.
Any real playoff has a legit "play-in." There are no opinions, no committee, no creative seeding or home field, it all has to be determined by playing games and having all spots determined by what happens on the field. Everyone knows those qualifications by the first snap of the season. All tie-brakers are spelled out, you know what you have to do to make the playoffs.
Seeds are determined the same way. The only thing left to be determined by a governing body is the day and time.
And none of that will happen until the overall governing body can also set the conference/division set-up. That includes every team being in a conference.
It seems unlikely to happen in our lifetimes.
The more they keep tweaking it, the more the old bowl system proves far better for the quality of games and the enjoyment of college football in the post-season.
Nor should it happen in our lifetime.
The current model is legit. Win your P4 conference, and you are guaranteed a spot in the tournament. Seems like a pretty simple requirement there. That is something we never had in play before this year.
Don't win your conference, then you may or may not get in, depending on your body of work.
Going beyond 16 teams would be overkill at this point.
And a 64-team playoff is not even close to being realistic, as you would completely make the regular season meaningless.
This isn't Texas High School football, where now half the teams in the state make the postseason (I can remember when only 2 schools from a district made the playoffs, and there was only one champion for each classification - none of this Division 1 or Division 2 mess).
For those of you arguing for more guaranteed access beyond just conference champions, then you would have to accept that more challenging out of conference games are necessary for now (at least if you are a Big XII or ACC team). That's the only way that a team like BYU could get into the current setup as a 2-loss non-champion.
But then again, we have some on this board who applaud teams like Indiana for going 11-1 with a weak sauce schedule. So you might have trouble scheduling matchups against the SEC and Big Ten teams at the moment.
I mean, if I'm a team like Indiana, then why would I schedule a risky matchup, when I can play a bunch of powder puff teams and know that folks are simply going to drool over my record at the end of the day and ignore that I played the equivalent of a District 13-5A schedule?
