Saw the 60 Minutes segment tonight on Indiana's National Championship Football team. They went from worst to first in three seasons. That could have been us had our Regents decided not to blow up Baylor Football.

It could not have been us because Art Briles had already been here for seven years and at no point did we get to first (in the nation). Look, I really enjoyed the Art Briles years, but there is just a lot of revisionist history around him. He was not Bear Bryant (and he wasn't Curt Cignetti, for that matter).

Bryant, no. Cignetti, no. However, in ALL of Baylor football history, there was never a match for the excitement, confidence, euphoria that was generated amongst our fans than in his era. His approach to offense was hard for defenses then. Probably today the elite teams would do a better job defending it; however, victories, excitement, and confidence would still be hanging around. Tough to deny.

No doubt, he was the most successful coach in Baylor history (you can argue overall legacy with Grant Teaff), and it was definitely the most exciting era. But in terms of him leading us to national championships or having us as a perennial top 5 team, that did not happen and I don't think was set to happen. We would have stayed near the top of the Big 12, but it's a big jump from "perennial Big 12 contender" to "national title contender." We never even came close to pulling off what Cignetti just pulled off at Indiana.

And I think winning heals all. Art Briles was able to have us win consistently in the Big 12. But I got just as much enjoyment out of the 2021 season as I did the 2013 or 2014 seasons. This idea that winning was somehow more fun because it was Art Briles leading us to victories is weird to me. But a lot of fans on this board seem to feel that way.

Bull.

Anyone who watched Baylor knew the 2015 team before Russell was injured was unstoppable. They were going to the national championship with a chance to win it all.

For the same reasons Cam Newton won a championship at Auburn.

Russell was simply too good and too balanced to be stopped. We had a team with NFL talent on both sides of the ball. We had a senior OL.

Don't even try to tell me I'm wrong.

Except that there was no reason for Russell to still be in the game. We were way up on Iowa State. Briles had a tendency (IMHO) to leave the starters in too long.

I'm sure Gary Patterson is out recruiting for USC as a DC. Giving someone a tour of the facilities once they land on campus is one thing, marketing the program to high schools is another.

Just look at scores across the country. Defenses have caught up with and are currently ahead of the offenses. And the Art Briles offense, in particular, has been neutered by rule changes and defensive adjustments.

Art will either have to care way more than he ever has about the game's other phases or innovate again to be successful in the modern era. And he's running out of time for innovation.

I never said his offenses were one-dimensional. But they were heavily reliant on a tempo you can't effectively run anymore because of changes in rule interpretation and implementation.

As we saw with both Kendal and Lebby while Art was away, the veer and shoot doesn't work nearly as well when defenses are set and ready with the personnel they want on the field.

College football has changed dramatically in the last 10 years. It's much more difficult to smoke and mirrors your way to success. If you can't line up and move a set defense off the ball, you're not going to have success running the ball. And when you can't run the ball effectively, passing games lose their effectiveness, especially once the field condenses in the red zone.

It's much more about execution now than it was in Art's heyday, when you could literally get mismatches by running faster than the defense was prepared to go.

Personally I don't think college football T least the X's and O's have changed that much. And several of the better offensive teams run a lot of the wide open offenses and fast paced offenses that Art ran. Don't believe his type of offenses are obsolete

The success of his run game was largely predicated on tempo, too. We could maul middle-of-the-pack defensive fronts, but we struggled to just line up and move the best ones we faced. The best example of that was the Cotton Bowl, but there were others, too.

When we could catch defenses off guard and unprepared, they were helpless. But the rules have basically eliminated that element of the game in college football.
