Since you're so good at giving directions do you know the way to San Jose?

Been to San Jose. Allow me to recap that "Way to San Jose". It was close to a nightmare.

Fortunately that San Jose trip woke us up to go on and put together an UNDEFEATED SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP.

We had gone through Lubbock like poop through a goose. 11-3. Held them to -38 yards rushing & 102 total yards.

We then drove #20 Houston 24-12. Some fella I know got SWC Player of the Week after 13 tackles, a fumble recovery and blocked a field goal. Who was that guy?

Had a flat the next week versus SMU but still managed to get through Dallas unscathed 32-28.

Drove over to College Station & put 46 points on the Ags while only giving up 7. They scored on our second team.

Went through TCU in Ft. Worth 21-6. TCU had 16 yards rushing.

We were headed to Arkansas and unfortunately ended up in San Jose. 22-30. A blemish but still no conference losses.

After waking up we hopped on the Arkansas road and won 42-15. 116 yards rushing by the Hogs.

The road to Houston meant an unfortunate stop at Rice. Still though after a 16-6 victory the Cubs remained undefeated in conference play!

The road then took us through #20 UT. Baylor became the first private school since the 1949 Rice Owls to win the SWC Championship after we dog-drilled Texas. Texas had 9 first downs, 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for 50 yards in losses. The Horns had 35 yards rushing. 138 total yards. That same fella who got SWC Player of the Week versus Houston in Week #4 got Southwest Airlines Player of the game versus UT in Week #11.

I'm sure glad the road led through San Jose! What a wake-up call that turned out to be.

Since Baylor started playing football there have been only 4 Baylor teams that went undefeated in SWC or Big 12 play:

1915 Bears went 3-0 in SWC play

1922 Bears went 5-0 in SWC play

1924 Bears went 4-0-1 in SWC play

The 1980 Bears went 8-0 in SWC play

We yielded an average of 11.7 points per game. We yielded an average of only 9.6 points in conference play.

So was the SWC "down" in all those seasons? Or just in the 1980 season, as you recognized?

Here's the thing, it doesn't matter. The banner is still the banner. You can only beat the teams on your schedule. I never understood the desire for the "best" two teams to play in the playoff. That is a demonstration, not a playoff. Win your league, if the league is down more power to you. Not the teams fault. This eye test stuff is BS.

But you let the 3rd place team in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association bend you over for 30 points, so all those numbers you're beating your chest about become irrelevant.

30 points on your home field.

To the equivalent of Sul Ross St.

Worst loss in Baylor football history.

You yielded 30 points.

Nope. Jess Neely won or shared four Southwest Conference titles at Rice: 1946, 1949, 1953, and 1957.
Those were real teams always winning their Cotton Bowl

I'm not sure an entire season of winning can be voided with the loss of 1 bowl game after a month's layoff. Few coaches in history have even a 60% winning % in bowl games. I think Art was 4-2.

Sounds a little like the Bear team in 2014 that got dog drilled by lowly and unranked West Virginia, 27-41.

That West Virginia team finished 7-6.

Ouch.

The 1980 team did not have to pray for a rival conference team to help us win the conference. We won it outright. We were not CO-champs.

Defense wins Championships!

Outright.

We are both wrong. I followed the 1981 Baylor Press Guide .

1946 Owls lost to Arkansas

1953 Co-Champ Owls lost to SMU

1957 Owls lost to UT

The 1949 Owls did go undefeated in conference play.

Not even close.

LSU in 1908 - 0-89
Texas in 1913 - 0-77
Texas A&M in 2003 - 10-73
Texas in 1999 - 0-62

Wait a minute...............did we really give up 70 points to West Virginia in 2012. 807 yards given up. In 1 game?

A loss on the road to a P5 member of your own conference PALES in comparison to losing AT HOME to a team a couple levels below your level, a team equivalent to a Lone Star Conference team today.

Pathetic comparison.

Almost as pathetic as losing to the 3rd place team from the PACIFIC COAST ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

Losing to WVA and UT that year, after such great O in those games, was terrible. Could have been at least 10-3 instead of 8-5. Nick Florence did an incredible job with Art's coaching. Just no D.

Give it up. We are in the Baylor record books. Hell, I'm in the Baylor record books.

Right out of the Baylor Media Almanac:

While no Baylor team will ever replace the 1974 Bears in the hearts of Baylor fans, that 1980 team surely ranks No. 1 in terms of pure accomplishment. It not only won the crown by three full games, it led the league in both total offense and total defense and put no fewer than eight players (a record for a Baylor team) on the consensus all-conference team.

The 1980 team did not lose a single conference game!

The 1980 team did not have to reply on help from other conference foes to become either CO-CHAMPS or Big 12 champs.

Keep trying Delma!

Have you been watching how the SEC and the Big 10 football programs operate for decades, and especially now with NIl? Their HC's win or they're gone. They at least defend their coaches and their Universities. The Baylor Regents did neither. They only defended themselves.

We had a few players we needed to release. Vast majority were good. Not sure why that was difficult.

Not sure if you've kept up with the media story but they didn't defend Briles because he told them he was going to UT. That's old news.

yeah, a good list of regents had Ian on speed dial. Rather than fulfill their responsibilities as regents, they treated it like a country club with perks.

"We had a few players we needed to release. Vast majority were good." Your words, not mine. So who were the "few?" Pretty bold accusation, would assume you had the names to back up the statement before you made it.

I'm just asking it back. Who should we have kept? Why would we need attorneys if they were all locked in Bible studies wearing their pants out praying? You're telling me all our players were straight arrows with no disciplinary issues?

I'm assuming you have an opinion since you're making the claim.
ImABearToo

Never suggested they were all "straight arrows." Just curious who by name should have been dismissed. Google will provide you with Baylor rosters from 2008-2015. Take a look and provide the names of those you believe should have been dismissed. You must have those names.

Art's own text messages condemn him. He was running a rogue program with total disregard for the women his team was abusing. He and the president only wanted to win at all cost. If having thugs join the team works, look the other way and blame the girls for getting involved with bad dudes. Really, going back to coaching and getting blistered on the field adds insult to his injury. Art needs to lay low, thank his lucky stars he got his cash, and leave the game that left him behind alone. Yes, the president was to blame as well. You can't have a debacle culture without heads rolling, Board had no choice given the findings of the independent study.

Because of FERPA, we'd never know the true number but it's not a leap to say that 4, or 5 players are in the doghouse at any given time. It just is. It doesn't mean they are guilty, expelled, etc. This is college athletics.

1. About 320 players came thru Art's team over 8 seasons. Lose the Broad Brush!
2. Zero training was made available to any Athletic Department employees by the Title IX office.
3. Zero leadership from the BoR.
4. Every other winning team's University would have managed it, given training and moved on.
5. Baylor is not geared to handle, nor does it want, big time football, with all of the publicity, expectations and coordination between Administration, Regents, HC, campus and city police, that ALL blue bloods, and now Indiana, have in place.
