Go ahead, put money on it.

We overreacted to the Auburn game last year as well, chocking it up to "wow, SEC tough".

Dillingham is a better coach than CDA by a long shot. And I think UCF feels enough juice in year 2 to be a year 8 CDA team in Orlando.

Every year, CDA has us play down to our opponents

No issue with going for 2. Still have a huge issue with not trying the FG earlier at 10-7.

Did you see the first FG attempt? It's hard to have any confidence in a kicker booting the greatest screwballs you've ever seen.

No doubt that was dog ugly but if you're ready to give up on your FG kicker as a coach in the 1st game of the year because he missed his first attempt then you should fire whoever is responsible for the kicking game and consider firing yourself as head coach because it implies the position was completely misassessed and the talent level misevaluated at that position in both Spring practice and a month of pre-season practices. It's difficult for me to believe the kid shanked every FG in practice and yet we put him in the game as our FG kicker. Surely if he was that undependable in practice and we had no confidence in him, we would have gone with someone else.

EDITED TO ADD: Just saw your other post that said he was a disaster in camp. Didn't know that. That explains a lot more, but although I know we lost Hawkins to Ohio St unexpectedly surely there was someone who could have competed with him in preseason practices? I guess not if that's who we rolled out. Yikes.

This just seems ridiculous at this level. W. Michigan backup kicker just hit 4 fg vs Michigan. Your kicker is your kicker. Kick it when basic football says kick it. First game, one kick in??? bs

Auburn may not be that good - we found several ways to lose - we seem to be good at it - I will buy the 8-4 to keep his job - we have no clue how good Auburn is - I still don't see this team winning more than 5 - 6 if we are lucky

It feels like we did more to lose than Auburn did to win.

But if I'm an Auburn fan, though stoked about getting a win, I'm probably not that crazy about how the team looked all day, either. They're thinking they should have been able to pull away sooner and not keep Baylor hanging around.

This game didn't move the needle much as far as "next year." From what I'm seeing there is a lot of "proud of our effort!" type feelings across the board. And of course you have a lot of the other side as well. Gonna be a tug of war between those factions for a while.

I don't even care about what happens after any more. I want to see progress, consistency, upward trajectory. I think the overall fan base is probably a bit more interested after this game, compared to a week ago.

This was probably more on the encouraging sign for me, but still some issues that hold them back a bit. A lot depends on how well DJ progresses and the offense around him. D looks good, but we still need to see them against better offenses.

This team has potential, if they stay healthy. We'll see how it looks in November.

Looking at Reddit and other forms of social media, truthfully, the people who are even remotely bothered by the loss are in the minority. Unfortunately, the Baylor fanbase has a "just happy to be here" mindset. As long as they can go to the the office or the golf course or whatever and participate in football conversations and get a little pat on the head and hair ruffle from the SEC fans for almost beating a lower-tier SEC team that gets the benefit of the doubt for being in the SEC, they are perfectly satisfied. Moreover, they are shocked and angered that you and I are not satisfied with that paradigm.

Nobody likes to lose, but virtually everyone picked Auburn to win, so it's certainly no shock.

Baylor picks up right where they left off, a team with a penchant for not winning games they could have won. They seem like a team with the possibility of winning maybe one or two more of those than the previous year, if they continue to build on the improvements they showed in game 1, and don't keep finding ways to shoot themselves in the foot.

That last one is a booger.

If anything it hurt Aranda's case because it showed he probably never should have been hired in the first place. New D coordinator comes in and runs circles around whatever CDA was doing the past 4 years.

ImABearToo said:

Klandy is the secret sauce. I like him as a HC. As HC he'd likely keep Spav around, and on a leash. We hire him as HC or someone else will.

I like Klanderman in the role he's in. But I wouldn't be opposed to giving him or Spav a shot at the head coaching role if we strike out with our top targets or no obvious targets emerge.

I think this is the best set of coordinators we've had in a long while.

Bit early for fire the Coach after a 1 point loss to an SEC for in Atlanta pn Labor Day? O thought today actually helped his case.

i don't really think Baylor or Auburn are really very good. Our fan base has sorta sunk pretty low if they are satisfied with a 1 point loss to a very mediocre team that looks like a 5-7 team. I am beyond tired of Aranda and believe he is the worst coach since Steele. And yes, Guy Morris was better, particularly because he helped dig us out of Steele's hole. Aranda has put us back in the hole.

Saw the same thing and think it is legit. It was the second to last play of the game when Aranda called his last timeout when it happened. Players lined up, then a 12th Auburn player ran on the field and got set. We could have just snapped the ball and gotten half distance to the goal and then burned the timeout next play. But in typical CDA & Co. fashion, no one saw it and we called our last timeout. Since the ball was never snapped no penalty occurred. Turns out that extra yard would have made a difference.

The fanbase doesn't blow. It's just loaded with sunshine pumpers who ignore reality. The same narrative was spun last year after week 1. The Baylor fanbase lives in an alternate reality where every opponent is better than they really are. Auburn sucked last year. They'll suck again this year. And that's true of Baylor as well. The bar has become so low that the pumpers are already crying 6-6. As if that's some big accomplishment in the joke that is the B12. Oh well. Win the next 2 and a huge game awaits against CO. My money will be on Dave again losing a game he could have won

We had to call the timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty. We subbed late, and they did the delayed sub thing. We couldn't snap because they were still "subbing." They would have run the 12th player off eventually, but with the play clock running down, we had no choice but to call timeout.

If we go 6-6, I think Aranda will be fired.

I think a record like 2024's is the minimum bar for being retained. And if he starts 2-4 this year, as he did that season, he'll likely be fired before he gets a chance to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

I honestly don't get all of the angst here. We'll either be better and it will be a fun season or we won't and Aranda will be fired. It's a win-win from my perspective.

The angst for me is the same things repeating themselves. Dave doesn't take points. That has bit him in the ass every year… he doesn't learn..
How many times have you seen Baylor claw themselves back only to give up the inevitable TD. That also repeated itself. Baylor defense was solid. I'll wait a few weeks to see if that was more Baylor or more Auburn being ass. I'll die on the hill that Dave Aranda is without a doubt a bottom 3-5 P4 coach at this point. I think the guy is an absolute garbage can of a coach. And he proves that weekly imo.
I'll give credit where it's due & when it's due. Right now the ones who've questioned why DA was brought back and vindicated.
Where we disagree is at what point he's getting fired. IMO Dave is being brought back regardless. I think even at 4-8 he's coaching Baylor in 27. There's always going to be an excuse on Baylor's end to keep Dave

I can't get mad about not taking points yesterday because those points were far from guaranteed with this year's kicking game.

Kickers have to earn confidence, and this kid hasn't come close.

Time will tell, but I saw more to be encouraged by than discouraged yesterday. That was the first time in a very long time that we looked like an equal with an SEC team that recruits SEC talent. We beat Vandy in the bowl game with Rhule, but they didn't really invest or recruit at that level at the time. And even the Ole Miss team we manhandled in 2021 wasn't just supremely talented.

I don't think Auburn's a great team, but from strictly a talent perspective, they'd likely be behind only Tech in the Big 12. So to go out there and hang physically and look like the better team for much of the game is a good sign.

All that said, wins and losses are all that matter from here on out. We either win games or we don't. And if we don't, we'll have a new coach next year. Like I said, win-win.

Details matter. You have to know those little, but consequential, details to keep the odds in your favor. Every play counts. We've been on the other side of that for years.

You're just a bad person to think like that. Deliberately snapping the ball in that situation would mean we weren't really the Care Bears.

I will say I did question going for the win, instead of playing for OT in that situation.

IMO, you go for the win when you are an underdog that is overmatched and you are able to pull an upset. Your team is wasted, left everything on the field and you have them on their heels. Basically, if you let the opposing team get their breath, you are overmatched. I did not see that situation there.

I saw a D and a team that was going punch for punch, not intimidated and had energy. I would say BU was gaining momentum after a 14 play drive. D was rested and living in their backfield. In that situation, I kick and play for overtime because I believe we can stand toe-to-toe.

That was what I questioned...

Overall, can't be negative. But, that gave me pause.
