1 and 2 are the only real options and likely we will be a 3rd or 4th best option for Danielson. Bell is probably our best bet but I don't want another guy with no HC experience. 7 seasons of watching Dave "learn" on the job has been painful.

Imagine wasting another year with Dave Aranda football just to hire guys we could've already hired last year. What purpose did another of Dave serve?

This type of resource mismanagement doesn't get hammered hard enough by the BOR. It's fine if you think Traylor or Danielson are the guys, but if they are then why are we not already in Year 1 with them? There was no value to waiting.

True but, it's a dead horse. Why are we still kicking it?

From a practical standpoint, there was $4 million worth of value in waiting an additional year.

But the real reason the trigger wasn't pulled last year is that Rhoades went and got himself fired, leaving no full-time AD in position to evaluate the situation and oversee the firing/hiring process.

Rhoades' philandering earned Aranda a stay of execution. It's really no deeper than that.

I just think McNamee could've made that decision and hired Traylor or Danielson last year.

It would have been a rushed process, and they clearly didn't want to do that.

McNamee wasn't hired until Dec. 8. Asking him to hire a football coach in a matter of a week or two as his first order of business wouldn't have been fair to him or likely been a very high-quality or thorough process.

As frustrating as it was to wait, I can't really believe Blake Linda and Co. for wanting to treat both the AD and inevitable football coaching searches with care and diligence they deserve.

Yes, hiring Bell......even considering Bell would be an absolute disaster. This board would be more negative than at any time in Aranda's tenure.

Yes likely the wheels would come off the program. The posters here really have no clue what being fans of a program like that is like. They think being a .500 program is pure trauma. But yes that would be a move very reminiscent of the Steele hire.

I would honestly rather give Klanderman the job and see how he does rather than even interview Bell.

I hope the AD/Committee places a value on experience. Going after the next "up and comer" comes with risk. Sometimes coaches learn valuable lessons by failing in a job. Let's name a few that failed, were fired, and later became successful:
Bill Bellichick
Nick Saban
Andy Reid
Pete Carroll
Lane Kiffin
...and let's not forget it took John Wooden 15 seasons before he won a championship.

Oh Lord RGIII as per Twitter actually does want the job. I'm not sure if he is just seeking attention and isn't really throwing his name in the hat, or if he is begging for Baylor to reach out to him or both but it is trending. I have no idea why he is trying to throw his name into the mix. I hate to say it but he seems to have developed or is developing somewhat into a narcissist. It's trending over there or at least for me it is.

Sooo… with a Heisman, ZERO experience on ANY level of coaching/HC-team CEO basically and part of broadcasting team of lower tiered

Back to serious discussion. If our target really is the Boise HC we need to try to nail it down privately and very quickly, obviously with no announcement u til after the season. I'm afraid if UW or USC opens up they would go after him and we would lose that race. Of course I'm sure he isn't an idiot and knows those two could open up as well, especially UW, so he wouldn't allow Baylor to rush him into getting locked down too soon even with a hard to say "no" to offer.

Much later edit here. At least according to AI, UW would owe Fish 33 mil if fired this year so they probably aren't parting ways just real soon. Of course as mentioned Riley's is in the 60 mil figure so even they probably can't or aren't really willing to pay him that much to say good bye at this time.

Great players don't always make great coaches. If he was a proven winner as a coach at the college level, NIL era, I'd be all for it. But, he is not a proven winner as a coach.

Wins: 273
Losses: 364

I wouldn't say that Mike is too old to coach at all, but he went to college when I did and he is 68 years old. I would rather play golf and pursue other interests rather than jumping back into a career I've been out of a number of years. What a terrific and intense linebacker, though. Also quite intelligent, good leader, and high character. Not sure he'd want to be an assistant coach at this point in time, and I'm all for letting the new coach pick his own assistants.

I had missed that Gary Patterson is Riley's DC at USC. Bringing both back to Texas where both have deep recruiting roots and potentially an excited donor base for NIL could be an interesting move.

I know many don't like Riley, and most seem to hate Patterson, but both have the pelts on the wall for their respective sides of the ball.

I personally think the cross country conference is harder to win at than advertised (see Oregon and ISC) but UCLA seems to be doing ok. Two respected coaches with strong recruiting and an easier road schedule could do wonders for the Bears.

Traylor as Head coach
Klanderman as Asst. Head Coach, with defensive duties

Would be my personal preference. Much like McGuire was asstant head coach

The new HC will have the freedom to pick his own staff, if we are smart. If not we aren't going to have good candidates.
DTBear

I doubt that Traylor would be told who his DC is. That never works and his DC has been with him a long time. The only way I could see Klanderman staying as DC would be if we hire one of these pure offense no defense guys and even then it may not work if the team respects Klanderman more than the HC. It's part of the nature of football. The defense we saw last night is better than any staff being considered with the possible exception of Wake Forest or New Mexico…..and last night Baylor was incredible on defense.

Obviously to us that are long in the tooth that witnessed him on the field at BU & Chicago, he will always be important. I just don't think the 18-22 year olds today could resonate with him on any level.
