Kudos to LIB, MR BEARS for the suggestion!

I don't know what forum it should go on but, we need a centex HS Sports history thread. This area has had some great athletes and great games

  • Nothing current. At least - 10 years? old.
  • Needs to be in the greater Centex area. I'll let you define your own 'Greater Centex'. Thinking over to 45 in the East (Fairfield-Buffalo), over to 281 in the West (Hamilton-Lampasas), up to Waxahachie in the North and down to Georgetown in the South. But you make your own call. We have folks from all over.
  • HS CREDITS ARE THE ONLY FACTOR! College not so much although a mention is probably helpful in case folks arent familiar with them from HS
  • Any sport - on Football as thats where we all congregate
  • Doesnt have to be your HS.
  • Male or Female

Louis Fite - Waco HS

Fite for Waco HS, circa 1991. As a senior, Fite ran for 2,532 yards, Parade All-America. After high school, Fite moved on to Texas A&I. Fite ran for more than 1,100 yards in 1993 and won an ESPY in 1994 for a play in which he flipped over a defender into the end zone. (had to add that one in - the flip was hilarious)

Ok, II'll throw a couple of bones to our Temple fans:

Barton "Botchey" Kock (Temple HS):

Played college ball at Baylor and was the 1st Consensus All-American from the SWC.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barton_Koch:

Quote:

He was named to the All Time Texas High School Team by Texas Football magazine in 1968 and to the "50-Year Super Stars" of the Southwest Conference by Texas Football magazine in 1969.

Mean Joe Green (Temple Dunbar):

http://www.tisd.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=376393&type=d&pREC_ID=925508

Quote:

Joe Greene is a 1965 graduate of Dunbar High School. He played college football at the University of North Texas, where earned the nickname "Mean" Joe Greene. Greene went on to play professional football with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League, where as a member of the "Steel Curtain" defense he won four Superbowls, and two "NFL Defensive Player of the Year" awards. Additionally,.Greene is also well known for his appearance in the "Hey Kid, Catch!" Coca-Cola commercial in 1979. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The West brothers from Mart. Late 60's/early 70s.

All of them big guys from a small school. Played against them when they moved up to AA (Midway, McGregor, Clifton, Hillsboro, Robinson, Connally, Teague and Fairfield in district then I think - Rosebud-Lott went out when Mart came in)

Seemed bigger but probably 6'3, 6'4, 250ish. Frank and Jack were two of the three. Maybe Joe for the third??

Frank and Jack were both All State I think. Played at A&M after that. Both dominated the shotput too. I think one held the Aggie record for a bit

How about Waxahachie's bball player Desmond Mason? His legs were very badly burned when he was 3 years old when a car radiator exploded. 3 months in the hospital, they thought he would never walk again, multiple skin grafts over the next few years, father spent years in prison for selling cocaine. Turned out to be one of Waxahachie HS's best basketball players ever. Then onto Okie State and onto a 10 year NBA career.

A&I was a big time NFL producer at the time. I played there a few years before Louis. From the three teams I was on, we had over 20 guys play pros. Three players in the NFL Hall of Fame from TAMUK.

With that said, I seem to remember Louis was going to Baylor but grades took him out. Javelinas were the next thing up

One of those West boys forever held (holds?) the CenTex record for shot put. He threw it about a mile. Or 65 feet or so. Same thing, as far as I was concerned.

I think you're right. A state record until Michael Carter totally obliterated the world with that 81 ft throw in '79. I dont think anyone has come within the realm of possibilities since then

Louis was the University of Colorado's prime recruiting target to step in and replace departing All-American running back Eric Bieniemy. Fite ended up signing with Baylor but due to grade issues ended up at A&I. His senior year as a Javieina he and two other backs ran for over 1,000 each.

Edit: The summer before his senior year Fite and his cousin were jogging in preparation for the upcoming season when his cousin was tragically struck and kill by a car. Louis dedicated that season to his cousin and what a season it was.

Then there was the fella a few Bears might remember, Frank Pollard - as a Senior at Meridian HS right up Hwy 6, he became the highest scorer in the history of the state Texas high school track meet, winning the discus (154'9"), the shot (56'3"), the 100 (9.9) and the 220 (21.8). His sprint-relay team also placed fourth.

He wasnt too bad in football either

Dave Campbell:

In the backfield Tucker started with John "Boody" Johnson, "Waco's greatest back of all time who streaked across Texas gridirons like a comet.

(Years later, in 1978, wanting to get a fresh story for Texas Football Magazine, I hired longtime AP regional sports editor Harold Ratliff to select his all-time Texas high school football team after 48 years of watching and reporting in the high school game. Ratliff wrote this: "Unhesitating, I would select Boody Johnson as the greatest high school player in Texas history. I must admit it is quite amazing that one of the first players I ever saw should stand the march of time in such fashion since there have been around 400,000 boys play the game in the 48 years. But Johnson today stands alone.")

Following Boody's senior season the Ft Worth Star Telegram selected him 1st Team All-State at all 11 positions.

How often do you see a kid that took his HS to the Texas Basketball championship, become a 350lb 3 Time NFL All Pro?

Leonard Davis was the only child of LA and Sammie Davis. But (big butt...;^) ) he had 21 half brothers and sisters. LA had 11 kids, Sammie had 10. Big Leo was their only mutual offspring

Wortham Bulldogs - all 137 students worth. 4 years on the varsity. ended up taking an 2 win team as a frosh to 11-1 his senior year

That list isnt even close to correct.

Houston Oilers took Don Hardeman 1st round 1975
St Louis Cardinals took Johnny Barefield in the 2nd round
Cards took Doug Greene in the 2nd round
Browns took Larry Collins in the 3rd round
Lions took David Hill in the 2nd round

Those are just a few. I played from 74-76 with all of them. Tons more

Then of course you have 3 NFL Hall of Famers who arent on that list: Gene Upshaw, John Randle and Darrell Green. All in the NFL and not on that list

Like I said above, when Louis Fite signed with A&I, we were a football factory. In the later 90s NCAA changed the way they did business more guys like Louis signed with D1 teams

Pat Zachry (Richfield):

http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/c237966a

Quote:

There are few players in the history of professional baseball who have made as strong an impact in their debut season as did Pat Zachry. Through the 2012 campaign, Zachry remains one of only three pitchers to secure Rookie of the Year honors while helping lead his team to a World Championship. Establishing other remarkable precedents during that same 1976 season, Zachry soon became the last-minute component in a trade involving one of the greatest pitchers of all time...Tom Seaver from the Mets.

William's son Wallace, who carved a successful career in sales, settled in Waco, Texas, where his youngest son attended Richfield High School the same prep school that also would produce future major league players Tim Spehr and Todd Haney.

Zachry was fortunate to even be around to attend high school. Early teenage antics resulted in Pat taking a bullet in the abdomen at 14, and he thereafter sought safer pursuits in sports. A natural draw a number of relatives from both parents' extended families received athletic scholarships through the years Pat drew serious attention from professional scouts after twirling three no-hitters in summer league competition.
