Any updates on new transfers linked to Bu. JJ White is obviously 1 mentioned above
Gwath is almost certainly a Kentucky commit soon. We dropped out of the race to focus elsewhere a while back.Mitch Henessey said:
Two multi-year guys I hope we are taking a hard look at:
- Magoon Gwath, Fr., San Diego State - 7'0" C who was the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He was mentioned earlier in this thread. Averaged 8.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, and 2.5 blocks. Blocked 5+ shots versus elite competition (Gonzaga, Oregon, and Houston). He would be an elite defensive presence in the middle and would allow us to work Josh Ojianwuna back into the lineup slowly.
- Kanon Catchings, Fr., BYU - 6'9" SF who we know a bit about, as he absolutely torched us in Provo. That game was by far the highlight of his freshman campaign, as he only played 13 total minutes in BYU's final 8 games, including the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments. Shot 35% from 3 on decent volume, but isn't a good FT shooter and didn't contribute much outside of shooting this past year. If he develops into an all-around player, he could be a really good one.

Catchings entered the portal with a DNC tag but I haven't heard much about what schools had interest.
Both would've been very nice. My picks would be Aday Mara, Tyrone Riley IV, or Keanu Dawes, although early rumblings for Dawes say it's BYU/Kentucky. Early noise on Riley IV is Arizona.
NEWS: Highly touted transfer Magoon Gwath is returning to San Diego State, he tells me.

Cannot believe SDSU managed to beat out Kentucky on the last stretch, wow

Hoping Baylor, Kansas and Iowa State all shine next year. Need that for the Big 12 MBB profile. Hoping we win against Duke this Saturday. I feel if the refs call a fair game, we'll win.
Gwath would have been a perfect fit for us, but I bet he cost a ton in NIL money.Mitch Henessey said:

took a while but 3/3 finally hit, onto the next portal target.joenatty said:
Tarris Reed stuff that I mentioned a few days ago feels very hit or miss now, could stay at UConn or could be convinced. Seems like no one really knows. That being said, the price tag is up around 2mil now so I'd prefer if Baylor backed off and stayed focused on other guys. I'm sure many here would agree if that's how much he'd cost lol.
JJ White, Obi Agbim, and Michael Rataj are the guys that are being connected to Baylor right now.
Worried about him not coming back from injury, or hitting the portal?Quinton said:
Big time big coming? And I've sensed Josh might not actually be back at all, what it's looking like?
ASU Forward, Jayden Quaintance, had ACL surgery March 19, has entered the portal.Big12Fan2024 said:
Seems like it would be really dumb on Josh O's part to hit the portal when he was coming off an ACL injury. Can't imagine a player with an unsure status for an entire year would drive much demand or $ but I guess you never know!
Yeah, somehow I don't believe his rep is telling him that..."You're not hurting for money." The word they are putting out is he'll be ready by September, I'm betting another $2mm. You know, in the pros, contracts are conditional upon the full medical exam by the team buying. I'm betting NIL deals don't have that safeguard. Another thing the NCAA didn't think about.Big12Fan2024 said:
Little bit of difference between a 5 star guy who was projected to go in the first round of this year's draft versus a marginal player who is never gonna sniff the NBA. Quaintance already got paid $2 mil to play at ASU last year. I don't think he's hurting for money.
Without Dubravcic, we would have to find another big man even if Josh was 100% today. Josh is better off staying where he is, imo. If healthy, he plays for us. If he needs a year, he comes back and plays for us. Reps get paid by moving people around. You can get a payday from it, but you may not like where you end up.Big12Fan2024 said:
Yeah, I'm thinking he and his rep know someone (say Kentucky, Bama, Auburn, Arkansas......someone loaded with money) is willing to still pay him big dollars with thoughts that as long as he's available by early to mid Feb in a the stretch run, he's worth it. I doubt anyone believes he's ready to go by September. Who knows, maybe Drew will go after him again. We recruited him pretty hard at the same time we recruited VJ.
Either way, there's no comparison to a Josh, who no one is going to have in high demand to sign out of the portal counting on him to be a pivotal player in a stretch run, and pay him any more than he is making here. He's a nice kid, but there are plenty of healthy bigs in the portal who are as good if not better and could contribute immediately. So, the point still stands. He would be stupid to put his name in the portal.

Ironically, he's the ONLY one of our guys for whom most schools would have unloaded a truck.TWD 1974 said:How certain are we of Wright? He has the highest portal value by far.Mitch Henessey said:

no, there's probably a school willing to bet on him for a 2 year NIL deal. Like what Louisville did with Aly Khalifa but that wouldn't have been a wise decision for Baylor coming off an ACL injury.IvanBear said:Because of health?Ashley Hodge said:

Understandable, and I'm glad we're not going to make the mistake we did with Everyday Jon and Langston Love expecting an injured guy to contribute at top level again.Ashley Hodge said:no, there's probably a school willing to bet on him for a 2 year NIL deal. Having said that, Drew has to start recruiting better, I refuse to believe we have any culture in this program because we are a pure mercenary school now. There is no culture, and there is no development of leaders without multiple guys returning and that developing over years.
It's not organic or self sustaining at this point, it's installed brand new each year by the head coach. That's fine but its not healthy program culture like we had when we were making regular runs to the elite 8, sweet 16, and national championship.joenatty said:Saying there is no culture in the program is ridiculousIvanBear said:Understandable, and I'm glad we're not going to make the mistake we did with Everyday Jon and Langston Love expecting an injured guy to contribute at top level again.Ashley Hodge said:no, there's probably a school willing to bet on him for a 2 year NIL deal.
