What does a recruiting shutdown mean, or why are they doing one?

Not a transfer portal note but I saw this. This feels similar to the K State player who was a former wnba pick except this one is a number 10 pick not like a third round pick. I don't know if we will be exploring that option or not.

If we are done in the portal I hope we don't have any major injuries.

You do realize that next season's roster is by far the deepest of any roster during the CNC era???

still need a 4 with height/length, but the roster isn't teetering.

There are still 612 portal entrants not committed. I think they have until fall classes start? Or perhaps coaches looking outside the US?

I do. I would like to also see a 4 with some size. Ready to see Awou play.

Only ten healthy players, too slim for comfort.

You are correct. The problem however is that players want to play. Being number 11 or 12 on a roster does not bode great prospects. It would seem if the coaching staff thought that much of you that you would be at least a frequent rotation player, they would have offered way earlier.

Rosters are tough. I coached high-level competitive softball for 25 years. There was a saying used quite frequently....."two pitchers are not enough and three are too many". If the third one was primetime capable, they would not be on your roster as number 3. They would go to a team where they were at least #2.

I suspect there will be additions, but I would be highly surprised if any moved the needle for most fans. They would likely be insurance players at best unless there is an unusual situation with the recruit (international, for example).

Think folks are misinterpreting the importance of deep rotation players (#10-#13 in rotation). Those players aren't on the roster to win individual games. They can bolster seasons.

They are spare tires when injuries or illness occurs. Defend, rebound, set screens & avoid turnovers.
They suck up minutes in blowouts (either direction) to help core rotations players avoid injuries and limit minutes when the outcome is not in doubt.
They finish games (last 2-4 minutes) when outcome determined (not blowouts but winner clear). Again avoid injuries to and limit minutes of core rotation.

Reaching the post season with a "not injured" core rotation, fresh legged because their average minutes played is 2-5 minutes lower than it would otherwise be, and deep rotation pieces with some experience if something bad occurs……..that is how deeper runs are built.

A core rotation that achieves hosting status is the biggest key. But anyone who saw T. Scott's shooting percentage drop like a rock last season as she wore out at the end of conference play understands how big an issue "total minutes played" is in college basketball. Especially with women who shoot more from the lower body than men do.

But those players don't need to be Wonder Woman, wear a cape and defeat evil Horned Frogs.
They simply need to fill a role and do it at an acceptable level.
Easiest comp is a MLB team shopping the bargain bin for a #5 or #6 starter in March.

AP. You just made my argument that we need more players. Solid, perhaps not heroic, but dependable. And I wouldn't stop looking for heroic either.

We do need more. All these coaches and only 11 players.

We are differing on the use of the word "need".
A car needs gasoline, tires, and spark plugs.
It Is really great for a car to have air conditioning, a sound system, and heated seats. But not "need"ed.

one or two more players would definitely help maximize results. But I don't consider it a need.
a "plus"? Yes. a "benefit"? Yes. a "need"? No.

to me "need" implies absolutely necessary….
i might tell you i need to fly business class…..but being honest i wouldn't die in economy.
I might wish i died on a long haul flight in economy, but I won't.
