For years, the gold standard of WS games was Red Sox-Reds Game 6 in 1975, along with game 7 in 1960 (Mazeroski's walkoff HR for the Bucs to beat the Yankees). But 3 of the last 6 WS games could arguably equal them (game 7 last year, + games 2 and 5 this year).

Why not game 3 of the '32 series? Not everyday a dude calls his shot, and actually blasts one....

I am beginning to love baseball again.

Yes, baseball can rip your heart right out of your chest, but it certainly is more American and more welcoming than the politically-charged, politically correct, player-kneeling Anti-National Football League.

I realized last night that baseball is the pinnacle in the evolution of the human game. It moved beyond the rectangular playing field and removed the clock entirely.

Baseball is a game of man vs. man, and yet team vs. team at the same time. On the one hand, it's a dual between the batter and the pitcher, like an old Western shootout. At the same time, it is a team sport that gets even better as the teams draw closer together. It is a game that thrives off statistics and is effected by superstition. It is a game that can be played anywhere by anyone and has a minor league system like no other.

There are no politics. There are no personal statements. There is just baseball, hotdogs and enjoyment by everyone from the players on the field to the fans in the stands.

It is America's greatest pastime because it actually is a pastime and it is authentically American.

I see why my grandpa so adored this game.
Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet. I watched my first game in third grade, as that was when we got our first TV. Loved the game from that beginning and still do. Have seen better games, but the excitement level last night was high to the extreme.

Tell us all, what games?
That one in the corn field where all the dead pro ballers came back was pretty good.
Nope. the appearance of Kevin Costner in any film is like crapping on the dinner entree - no matter how good it was, it's ruined now.
Needless to say, I disagree wholeheartedly.

Dances with wolves is a damn good movie
Except for all the scenes with Costner, I agree.

I'd let Verlander go as long as he can. Don't over coach this. If we have a 2-3 run lead in the 7th, it has to be Lance for 3 innings. Keuchel should be able to pitch 3-4 innings out of the BP IF there is a game 7. He only threw around 86 pitches the other night.

I disagree, but to be fair, I went and looked up the reviews of those movies (Rotten Tomatoes):

Dances with Wolves: 82% positive (B-), but mostly for the theme. Some notable negatives include People Magazine's Ralph Novak, who wrote "more interesting than most films around these days. But it is still a failure" Tim Brayton wrote "some distinct, even major flaws".

The Bodyguard: only 31% positive (F), consensus reads "cheesy, melodramatic potboiler". Washington Post writes "Costner was probably more alive as the corpse in The Big Chill than he is here"

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: only 50% positive (F). Jay Boyar wrote "There's no subtlety in this Robin Hood". LA Times wrote "the makers of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves ... have ended up burying themselves". Dave Kehr called it a "depressive political allegory".

The Untouchables: 80% positive (B-), Dave Kehr wrote "an action film without much personality or drive". Most critics give credit to DePalma and Connnery, no mention by most for Costner.

Field of Dreams: 86% positive (B). TIME magazine called it "the male weepie at its wussiest". People magazine says "Alden's script goes from charming to preposterous to preachy". Rolling Stone calls it a "gooey fable".

Wyatt Earp: only 42% positive (F). Reviews included comments like "bloated and unexciting", "too slow-moving and uneven to digest", "turgid and painfully poker-faced".

Tin Cup: 69% positive (D). Critics said it was "predictable and lame", that "Kevin Costner's golfing romance has OK swing but bad form.", and "dispiritingly conventional and obvious."

Fandango: 50% positive (F). Critics said "cliches have to get started somewhere,", otherwise generally ignored this one.

So all in all, an average of 61% for the films, most praise for other stars or directors (e.g. Connery in Untouchables). It looks like Costner had some success but usually rode on the success of his colleagues in films.

Your mileage may differ.

Rotten tomatoes is a ****ty measuring stick imo. They pan good films and give stuff high grades to some idiotic films. And even good movies they give mediocre grades. I don't trust them.

Is today the day?

For the first time in history, the Houston Astros can win the World Series with one victory. It's been an incredible ride and an honor and a privilege to root for this team. The never give up attitude, the young talent, the wise veteran leaders, the Ace pitcher acquired via trade.

Only one other city failed to win a World Series in their team's first 55 tries (Philadelphia, 97 tries before winning in 1980). It's been a long time coming for Houstonians. Season #56 in Houston. So many lifelong fans are experiencing this. It will not be easy tonight. Winning a game at the home stadium of the team with the best regular season record never is. So it comes back to the question ...

I just desperately hope we don't get screwed over by NL style baseball and have to choose between extending a possible rally and keeping our ace out there. A crooked number in the first inning would go a long way. If we are in a position to win it and Verlander is laboring, I think you have to put Lance out there to finish it.

If Lance doesn't need have it, I'm calling Peacock. He doesn't know how to lose. Except 2 regular season games.

Went back and looked at the box scores, and noticed something:

In the losses to LA, Houston had 3 hits and 2 hits, an average of 2.5. In the wins, Houston had 14, 12, and 14 hits, for an average of 13.3 hits. Big difference whether our bats are hot.

LA's hitting was not so telling. LA got 6 and 7 hits in their wins, for an average of 6.5. LA got 5, 4, and 14 hits in their 3 losses, for an average of 7.7. If we count game 5 as an outlier, the average is 4.5, not too far from their 6.5 average when winning.

LA's errors came in Houston wins (2 in game 3, 1 in game 5). Houston's errors also came during Houston wins (1 in game 2, 1 in game 5).

Houston struck out an average of 8 times a gem in the losses, but 6.7 in the wins. LA struck out an average of 7 times in their wins, and 9.3 in their losses, so if LA strikes out more, that's good.

One revealing stat to me: Houston claimed an average of 1 walk in each of the 2 losses, but 4.7 walks per win. LA claimed 2 walks a game in their wins, and 4.7 walks in their losses. This indicates patience benefits Houston more than LA.

1-9 is the positions. Like when they say "6-4-3 double play", they mean short stop to 2nd baseman to 1st baseman, You may have seen this shirt around or something like it:

B and C mean the 2nd and 3rd people to bat in that spot in the order.

Digging into the batting stats, Here are LA's most dangerous batters as played in the Series so far:

1. Pederson, .364 avg, 4 RBI, 2 walks
2. Seager, .250 avg, 3 RBI, 2 walks
3. Taylor, .222 avg, 2 RBI, 4 walks
4. Forsythe, .308 avg, 2 RBI, 3 walks

Houston's most dangerous batters as played in the Series so far:
1. Bregman, .273 avg, 5 RBI, 2 walks
