Over 70% of Republican House members voted to impeach.
Over 80% of the House voted to impeach him.
None of the House Republicans who voted against impeachment defended Paxton's conduct. They criticized the process; none defended his actions.
What is the definition of overwhelming?
Abbott will appoint an honest Republican who won't trade political favors for his mistress's job and a house remodel.
You sure have a low opinion of the base. You believe they support an AG who took money & other things of value in return for favors from his office. He will have multiple criminal charges filed shortly
I don't think the base supports a politician whose mistress received a job in Austin from a supporter so Paxton wouldn't have to go all the way to San Antonio for a roll in the sack.
If you're right, God save Texas
Not my opinion. My assessment. Which pretty clearly looks to be in line with the polling.
even if we were for the sake of comparison to stipulate on the necessity, the process was profoundly politically inept. No lead-up. No escalating drumbeat of problems.....just BOOM what a surprise out of the end of a lege session which disappointed most conservatives. Small hand-picked committee under direction of a Speaker of dubious loyalty, working under the radar, dead of night, etc..... Reeks of establishments disrespecting process, ignoring primary and general election results to achieve what they failed to accomplish in those elections - decapitating the most effective leader of the Tx conservative movement in order to appease Democrats, which of course will not appease them at all. It's merely going to give them a yardstick to go after every other conservative against whom similar accusations could be contrived.
I'm a little more priggish than the "live boy; dead girl" standard. Putting public money in your pocket is also a red-line. But otherwise, pretty much a traditionalist: let voters decide. Beyond that, acting so precipitately was mind-numbingly stupid. There's a federal investigation going on. Why not at least wait for the indictment and let the Biden DOJ take the brunt of conservative wrath. Then, Phelan would at least have had the defense "the feds tied my hands...had to act..." That would have deflected at least some of the conservative anger at Biden DOJ: "dual standard of justice," "corrupt BIden DOJ," "...but Hunter still walks free....". It would have harmed party unity in one column, but built it up in another one. But now, our resident genius Speaker has invited all that anger to flow inward. What a nincompoop. Doing it before Paxton was even indicted. Just speechless at the dumbassery of the thinking in Austin. But Phelan is proud of himself! Yay!
......the corrosive nature of the virtue posture.....noting harms the common good than letting affectations of principle obscure sober analysis of policy outcomes. Democrats have been there forever. GOP base has finally arrived. But thank goodness the GOP still has our moderate wing of self-styled statesmen which cannot conceive of entering the public square without clutching of pearls in fear that hard nosed politics with Democrats might break out. Sharp words might be uttered! So to avoid such a spectacle, we by golly must go take out the sharpest elbows among us as a peace offering. Which of course will bring no peace at all. It will only embolden them.
