Why in the world do Trump want to start a trade war with two of our best trading partners?

Trump's love for tariffs is a real head scratcher. If he follows through with this, expect inflation to return with a vengeance and shortages of many products. Will be VERY painful for the middle and lower classes.

It explains why he has had so many business failures. He picks unnecessary fights.

It's a popular idea because most people don't know much about economics.
I know about economics and I am not against them. Just because the globalist economists repeat scare tactics doesn't make them universally bad. They are a tool, I suspect Trump will use them accordingly.

Quite an accomplishment to start with $500 million and grow that into a multibillion dollar empire. Most successful businessmen have done failures along the way. This is true of people in general. The key is learning from mistakes: what one does after.
This concept of "failing" due to bankruptcies just shows you the difference between the wealthy and us little people.

Companies experiment and scrap multi-million dollar products and move on all the time. Companies operate at a loss for long periods of time. Trump has the funds and the means to experiment with companies. Investors take risks, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I don't like all of his business dealings, but we all know dumping a failing product is par for the course in corporate America. Billionaires dumping companies is not much different than a company dumping a product.

I also understand economics reasonably well and think tariffs are most useful when they are small, like all taxes. I read on another thread someone suggest that it's a negotiating tactic for Trump. I'm ok with that or even a modest increase of tariffs for goods from some countries, especially those who abuse or exploit our economy. But I also know how dangerous they can be. I laissez faire economist would argue that the best tariff rate is zero and that free trade should always be the goal. I agree with the understanding that reality might require adjustments.

So many tariff naysayers thinking Trump just doesn't get it.

Every single globalist news media and politician has been scaring you since the 80's. Communities are lessened by American workers having to compete with slave labor. The globalists don't give one iota about the crime in your neighborhoods, the weakening of the moral fabric of society, the poverty, the foreign control of the American workforce, or you or your family. They just want to transfer wealth from you to them. If you can't see what they've done to our communities by flooding it with illegals and exporting jobs, that's on you.

if American companies can't use slave and child labor, then American consumers shouldn't be able to buy from these globalist companies that do. American workers should not have to compete against slavery. Fair trade with free market as a guideline.

Last, Tariffs are a tool and Trump's instincts are usually spot on. His first term was some of the best we've seen. He's clearly going to work with these nations to ensure that they're prioritizing what we need them to prioritize. Could easily see Trump using the tariff with Mexico to reduce immigration and drugs.

If you're siding with progressives on economics, you're probably on the wrong side of things.

Last, the US and the West built China up. We've created a trading partner that can now rival us and is a potential threat to freedom across the globe. Yay team unfettered globalism, good job.

Sure, but you are forgetting an important thing

THEIR COMMUNITIES are not harmed....that is what is really important

Beverly Hills California, Highland Park Texas, Lincoln Park Chicago, DC, and Manhattan NY are not harmed by globalization and they don't care about how many good paying manufacturing jobs there are in the USA.....just that the stocks go up
Don't guess you have spent a lot of time in Manhattan. All of Manhattan is not the UES. I give you Inwood and upper Harlem for just a few. All you good people who love to go to Wally World looking for low prices gonna have to stop. Wally World is one of the most complicit importing Chinese goods by the Billions. Additionally, those rerfering to Chinese and Mexican "slave labor". I can only give you my experience in both places. I can only speak to very large factories in both countries that I ran back in my corp. days.

Specifically, in China, those factory jobs are great jobs, particularly for folks in the country that come to the bigger cities to work. We paid a very fair wage (for China). Additionally , we provided housing (dorms) and 3 squares a day (good food, not prison food). In Mexico, our folks made a good wage and insurance. I'm sure there is slave labor in some countries where are clothes are made. Just my first hand experience.

if Trumps adds on new big ass tariffs that he is discussing from China, Mexico, and Canada, anyone with basic economic knowledge should know that. We import 4.5M barrels of oil from Canada per day.

Advances in technology and communications in the 90's ushered in a more integrated world economy, and thus "globalism". That ultimately enabled the same with government collaboration, which helped add fuel to the "one world government" theories. Fortunately, that has to be achieved by old fashioned legislation, which we still have some semblance of control over. But we certainly need to be cognizant of our treaties and entanglements, which I agree liberals like to get us into some crazy ones like Climate Accords, extra-national rights, etc.
