Trump Loves ICE. Its Workforce Has Never Been So Miserable.
A "mission impossible" deportation campaign has left many employees burned out and morally conflicted.
By Nick Miroff

ICE occupies an exalted place in President Donald Trump's hierarchy of law enforcement. He praises the bravery and fortitude of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers -- "the toughest people you'll ever meet," he says -- and depicts them as heroes in the central plot of his presidency, helping him rescue the country from an invasion of gang members and mental patients. The 20,000 ICE employees are the unflinching men and women who will restore order. They're the Untouchables in his MAGA crime drama.

The reality of Trump's mass-deportation campaign is far less glamorous. Officers and agents have spent much of the past five months clocking weekends and waking up at 4 a.m. for predawn raids. Their top leaders have been ousted or demoted, and their supervisors -- themselves under threat of being fired -- are pressuring them to make more and more arrests to meet quotas set by the Trump adviser Stephen Miller. Having insisted for years that capturing criminals is its priority, ICE is now shelving major criminal investigations to prioritize civil immigration arrests, grabbing asylum seekers at their courthouse hearings, handcuffing mothers as their U.S.-citizen children cry, chasing day laborers through Home Depot parking lots. As angry onlookers attempt to shame ICE officers with obscenities, and activists try to dox them, officers are retreating further behind masks and tactical gear.

"It's miserable," one career ICE official told me. He called the job "mission impossible."

I recently spoke with a dozen current and former ICE agents and officers about morale at the agency since Trump took office. Most spoke on the condition of anonymity, for fear of losing their job or being subjected to a polygraph exam. They described varying levels of dissatisfaction but weren't looking to complain or expecting sympathy -- certainly not at a time when many Americans have been disturbed by video clips of masked and hooded officers seizing immigrants who were not engaged in any obvious criminal behavior. The frustration isn't yet producing mass resignations or major internal protests, but the officers and agents described a workforce on edge, vilified by broad swaths of the public and bullied by Trump officials demanding more and more.

An Atlantic opinion piece. OK, there's a few lazy ones that just want to rubber stamp their jobs. Got it. Americans wanted full deportations and they're getting them. We just need more. Thankfully ICE is an in demand job, 200, 000 applicants, it doubled in size already. More to come. You and the violent protestors you defend are the true terrorists.

We all agree with that. The sticking point is ownership. Denmark does not want to sell. Greenland does not want be annexed. Trump has threatened military. We can make any security changes we want right now. But a Division there and a Destroyer Group, we have an existing treaty.

It is Trump's rhetoric causing the issue.

Yes Trump's rhetoric is driving a favorable response. You have trouble with seeing what is going right in front of you. The US will either own Greenland or the EU will step up and become greater partners with the US in defense of the arctic. This is so simple, you just can't handle anything but the literal spelling out every single thing. Trump would prefer to own it, but the US wins either way. So very simple, and all due to him being a "bully".

That is BS and you know it. We have a treaty in place since 1951, we can put whatever we want to defend Greenland and the Western Hemisphere right now. Denmark and Greenland also asked us to invest in mining rare earth minerals. We said no.

If we want to shore up Greenland, we can have at it at any time. They do not want to sell, neither Denmark or Greenland. You going to force them? The Greenlanders have no option for their own freedom? What you are saying is oppression, they can't have their own Nation because we don't like it.

Again, you completely miss the point = Greenland is already an autonomous territory and has a pathway to independence, at which point there will be a bidding war (at minimum) between us and adversarial powers. Responsible leadership should avoid that scenario at all costs.

If Greenland means so damn much to Denmark, why did they give them a pathway to independence?

Denmark has repeatedly said that Greenland could go independent. So they don't care all that much. Greenland was on the path to independence. You know this. So this drama is about political grandstanding and using the situation to increase their payout from us and their ongoing defense spending from their people - defense spending is sorely needed by the EU. As for the Greenlanders, they will have to think about how much money they can make if the US purchases their land. They are poor, they are neglected by Denmark, and once its people have time to decompress, $100,000+ may be very appealing to them. They will be far better off with US wealth coming into their land than they are currently.

I really don't understand why you hate the Greenlanders so much. It's like you want them to be poor and under the thumb of Denmark.

I think you are seeing something that is not there. But, who knows! Pigs may fly or Donald says I failed to get Greenland.

By the way, did you see this? I know, means nothing.

Danish pension fund to sell $100 million in Treasurys, citing 'poor' US government finances

Trump has modified his approach multiple times. He takes in new information and changes path - tariffs are the prime example.

You have such a brain fog around Trump. He's not going to invade Greenland. Only leftists/TDSers actually buy into that.

He will force the issue until he's pushed it as far as he can. I hope he is successful.

Name one thing Trump has admitted he didn't get what he wanted

Given how consistently you've been wrong about him, you might want to go down that road.

Jesse is correct - looks like the Greenlanders would make great Americans.

Genghis Kahn would be in awe.

Yes he would, in no small part because cause of how few lives were lost in the process.

LOL!!! I remember the days when 40 million was a big number. A million here. A million there. Inflation I guess.

Call it a tax, the people are outraged! Call it a tariff, the people get out their checkbooks and wave their American flags!!!

Trump has created a public relations nighmare with his threats to take over Greenland, and the levying tariffs against European Allies. I think he has increased the possibility of getting impeached after the mid term elections.

JR: " what a petulant child."

There is just so much irony in JR posting that kind of comment.

He is trapped in the abyss.

Talk about irony.

I think a fitting Nietzsche quote is "In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs, it is the rule."

few things have cultivated insanity as a identity quite like neverTrumpism.

Or Trumpism.

Trump's antics have not caused harm to or collapse of NATO. Same for trade relationships. They have, however, spurred renewed focus and greater spending on a neglected island of great strategic importance to us. But the neverTrumper cannot see that, because to do so threatens self-image

What have I been wrong about? Beating Biden? Any one with. a pulse could beat him and Kamala.

DOGE has been a disaster, they are hiring people back daily. We are just recovering from it now. Tariffs remain to be seen.
So what have i been wrong about? His tactics are a disgrace to the office. I stand by that.

As if there was ever any doubt. Hopefully the house margin holds, so that won't be an issue.

Not to mention markets. If Europe starts pulling from US markets, it could get nasty.

See. Wrong again. DOGE was not a disaster. It identified enormous problems. it led to approx $150b in direct cuts, nearly 10% of the deficit. Less than hoped, but a good head start. It also identified a number of reforms to streamline govt, particularly in IT. If that was a "failure," then why is Schumer shaking his fist in anger to restore the cuts? I mean, the cuts are big enough to fire up the Democrat base, so they can't be "a failure," can they?
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/schumer-reveals-plans-reverse-doge-cuts-lawmakers-work-through-funding-push

Remain to be seen on tariffs? Tariffs have generated significant revenue (helping lower federal budget deficit) and done precisely what tariffs are intended to do on trade = reduce the trade deficit. It was textbook stuff.

You're wrong about damned near everything, friend, because all you do is 8itch about the guy 24/7. Yes, he can be an ass. He's also very, very relentless and effective at making progress doing the things he was elected to do. So I can put up with the schtick. It works for him. But you don't care that he's accomplishing the very things you say you want, because he's doing in a way that embarrasses you.

Frankly, the schtick has grown on me. I am increasingly amused at the way it inflames the vanities of unserious people.
