Staffing Was 'Not Normal' at Reagan Airport Tower, According to F.A.A. Report

The report, reviewed by The New York Times, said that one controller was communicating with both helicopters and planes. Those jobs are typically assigned to two people, not one.

My pilot friend told me this, and said it was the same crew (though I am not sure how he knows).

This is the first time I've seen this reported.

Ok, so post what really happened then. This tran was onboard and was mad at trump and we know trans are suicidal unstable people anyways. It also seems this blackhawk tried to hit 2 other planes before it finally crashed into the AA flight.

Snips from the NY Times updates link below

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/01/29/us/plane-crash-washington-dc?smid=url-share#plane-crash-reagan-airport-washington-dc

The plane's path: Shortly before the crash, the jet's pilots were asked to pivot their landing route from one runway to another, according to a person briefed on the event and audio recordings of conversations between an air traffic controller and the pilots.

The pilots: The two American Airlines pilots had been flying for years. Robert Isom, the airline's chief executive, stressed their experience but provided no additional details. Two Army officials confirmed that the pilots of the helicopter one woman, one man and a male staff sergeant were killed in the collision.

The duties of handling air traffic control for helicopters and those for planes at Reagan National Airport on Wednesday night were combined before the deadly crash between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet, according to a person briefed on the staffing and an internal preliminary F.A.A. safety report. That left an air traffic controller handling dual roles, according to the person briefed, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation into the crash.

The military helicopter that collided with an American Airlines regional jet on Wednesday night appears to have been flying too high and outside its approved flight path at the time of the crash, according to four people briefed on the matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

The Army Black Hawk helicopter was supposed to be flying in a different location and lower to the ground as it traversed the busy Reagan National airspace, the people said.

Biden's FAA was actively recruiting workers from groups who should have been disqualified while illegally discriminating against whites. This is why DEI is important.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively recruiting workers who suffer 'severe intellectual' disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency's website.

Where is that discriminating against white people?

Sometimes DEI is not about discriminating against White people and Asians

Sometimes it's about just being idiotic and weird

What you posted is an example of that
Further research shows that this initiative has been in place in support of a law passed in 1973 to encourage hiring of people with disabilities. Furthermore, the website language was in place under Trump 1.

I worked for 10 years with a guy with a mental disability. He'd be a horrible Air Traffic Controller, but he was a fantastic problem solver. He didn't handle stress well; I'd have to manage that. He could work for the FAA but not as an ATC. If there was a system outage or upgrade, he's your guy.

Again, I don't know the FAAs intention as I believe many organizations put policies in place as insurance against lawsuits.

I do not know, but posting fake conspiracy theories only discredits the poster is something strange did happen.

I am not a pilot, but I agree it does seem very odd that the helicopter pilot would just fly into a plan and not notice; however, that does not mean it was intentional. It might have been. We don't know. It could have been that the pilot was simply distracted and not paying attention. Yes it seems impossible given how maneuverable that he would not have seen the plane and done something.

The pilots were Andrew Eaves and Ryan O'Hara.

The good news is that with the current administration there is less a chance we'll get a cover up.

So we're either of the pilots or the overworked ATC guy DEI people (I.e. black)? That seems sort of relevant if Trump a going to make that statement.

From what I've read all the directly involved people were white...pilots and ATC....but I haven't seen that verified.
My understanding is that the lack of controllers on staff was due to DEI restrictions denying applications by well-qualified white males.

So even if the controllers on site were completely qualified and the color/sex/orientation of your choice, the DEI aspect may still be relevant.
I believe you are right here. The DEI issue is that there are a plethora of qualified competent white males that could be hired, but DEI initiatives meant airlines were below staffing levels at 99% of the air spaces in use, because they couldn't find enough DEI hires to slot for eligible positions.

If this is the actual case, DEI did indeed have all to do with the crash because they were short staffed when the crash occured, and very likely they were always short staffed.

It may not be the incompetence of an individual that caused the crash, it may be incompetence caused by short staffing, caused by DEI intiatives, keeping qualifed white males out of positions that were not properly staffed.

Quote:

The New York Times reported in 2023 that nearly all air traffic control sites in the country were understaffed. The shortage, per the report, forced many controllers to work 10-hour days, six days a week, resulting in an exhausted work force susceptible to making dangerous mistakes.

The air traffic control tower at Reagan National Airport, as of September 2023, had 19 fully certified controllers when the targets set by the FAA and controllers' union called for 30, per the Times.

Before the FAA's 2024 hiring totals were announced, its latest workforce plan had said the agency was short 3,000 controllers to fill air traffic control stations and towers across the country as of May, according to Airlines for America.

That understaffing leads to controllers regularly working overtime.

NBC News later reported that, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, staffing at the airport Wednesday evening was not normal for the amount of traffic and time of day, according to a preliminary FAA safety report on the collision.
So what is the underlying issue, or policy, forcing these Airports to be understaffed and employees overworked, when there are plenty of qualifed people that could fill the understaffed positions.

The New York Times and NBC News are legitimate news sources.

Timing was terrible and completely tone deaf. The family of those killed don't want to hear about hiring issues or DEI issues. They just want compassion for their loved one they have just lost.

Terrible terrible time and place to bring it up.

Is it bad policy, yes it is.

Just not the time to hash it up.

Also the reports going around that Trump froze the hiring of Air Traffic Controllers is falsehood.

Quote:

Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20 to freeze the hiring of federal civilian employees. Trump's order does not apply to military personnel of the armed forces or to positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety.

The order did not state if that applies to air traffic controllers, whose roles could fall under public safety.
A Department of Transportation spokesperson told NBC4 that air traffic controllers were exempt from any hiring freeze issued.

"The FAA has been hiring and onboarding air traffic controllers and other safety-critical positions," the statement said.
Quite obviously Air Traffic Control would fall under public safety.
