Not posting blame to anyone but I think people have become numb to "alerts".

Amber Alerts, Silver Alert, Weather alert.

especially in a big state like TX. You live in Austin and the alert is in Lubbock or Tyler, you just assume it doesn't affect you until it does.

Yes exactly.

Way too many and often not even for your area. Why is an alert for McAllen on the highways signs when you are driving through DFW? Amber or silver? It shouldn't be.

Why does my phone have to go off with that annoying noise at 2am for an amber alert out of the Houston area when a person lives in Waco or dfw or Austin.

It is why everyone turns them off so that even if an alert was sent out many people still would not have gotten it during the middle of the night.

A flood siren system is the way.

It would awaken one who is asleep and used when needed in specific localities.

Something like that is probably the solution. Those work well most places. One challenge in this area may be that we are talking about the headwaters of these rivers. Different little creeks and branches merge together to form these forks of the Guadalupe that end up merging together. Canyons and underground springs out in those hills are the genesis. When it rains hard, water rushes down lots of canyons, creates lots of creeks that don't normally exist, then all that water merges into the tributaries. I'm sure there is still a way to do it, especially once you start to get down the Forks, but I think execution in that area may be far more difficult than it is downstream.

I drive through that area regularly, and explore as many back roads as possible. You would need a thousand sirens just along the Guadalupe.

For more than 15 years I owned & operated a small business that designed, built, installed and maintained warning systems for flood prone areas. At the peak of my business, we had equipment all along the Guadalupe River, including 2 sites a few miles upstream from Mystic Crossing called Smith Crossing #1 and Smith Crossing #2. We also had sites in Reagan Wells, all along the Blanco River including Wimberly, and many other areas.
In 2015, most of my equipment along the Blanco was destroyed during the Wimberly flood.

My point is this... I am extremely familiar with the area around Mystic, Hunt, Ingram and the rest of Kerr County. That camp is extremely remote. It was very hard to get a reliable cell signal in that valley. The watershed upstream is extremely large, and spreads out for miles. All of the rain that falls for about 30+ square miles, gets channeled into that valley, just a mile or so upstream from the camp. So the camp was hit with the confluence of about 1/4 of Kerr Countys rainfall. Dozens of creeks and gulley washes dump into the Guadalupe, just above the Mystic crossing area. It creates a very dangerous situation.

Perhaps sirens would help, but they would need to be remotely triggered and have battery backup systems. The electricity in that area of Kerr County goes out all the time during major storm events. All of my equipment was running on batteries and solar panels for that reason.

Sadly, I had to shutdown my business in 2020 because I was squeezed out by cheap Chinese products. The competitions product was much easier on the budget, but it also failed a lot easier during heavy lightning.

I will say that unless you have been in that area of the Guadalupe during a flood event, it is really hard to imagine just how fast the waters can rise and how much damage they can do.

Thanks for sharing that with us. Way better explanation of what I was trying to say. I'm not an expert, you are, but I know that area very well. That jives completely with what I would expect.

The time lapse video clips above demonstrates very clearly how quickly the water can rise. The fact is there aren't going to be many early warning systems that will be effective enough under these circumstances, at least not over a wide area.

The only effective solution I can think of is not to spend the night in low lying areas near a river or creek.

Even dry creeks can quickly rise and become a raging flood in no time.

Certainly, this is not a time to try to take ghoulish political jabs based on what has occurred, and given the unpreventable nature of a flash flood, I'd argue there will never be a time for that.

This is sadly so predictable. In these horribly tragic disaster scenarios the left's first and foremost thought is ALWAYS how can we use and exploit this politically. They're shameless evil power hungry people who couldn't care less about the victims and their loved ones.

Yep, and let's begin real about what they think. They are happy because it happened in pro Trump country. And Christian kids and adults deserve it.

And it's being reported that the NWS had twice as many people as normal. They weren't understaffed.
I'm sure we'll learn more, but you sickos can hold off for a bit before politically salivating over the deaths.

It's sounding so far that all the campers that perished are probably from the same cabin, all 8 or 9 years old, and the youngest and most vulnerable to this flood.

Chloe Childress serving as a camp counselor at Camp Mystic when flash floods swept through the Guadalupe River area early Friday morning. She had just graduated from The Kinkaid School in Houston on May 23, 2025 and was incoming freshman at the University of Texas in Austin.

So young. So loved. So brave. Please give a prayer to Chloe's family and all those grieving tonight. She has been confirmed to be deceased. We will not forget her name.

It seems so far many of the casualties from Camp Mystic are coming from this cabin with the youngest campers.

It was Bubble inn and the twin cabins at Camp mystic

Apparently the cabins that are closest to the Guadalupe river and that house the youngest girls

So very sad

Dick Eastland (owner of the camp with his sons) apparently died when his truck was washed away as he tried to rescue girls out of Bubble Inn.

Rumors say his body was found with 5 of the girls he was trying to save.

Very hard to understand why there were no flood warning sirens on the most flash flooded river in the country. This issue had to have come up repeatedly.

No warnings would have been received and acted upon quickly enough in those early morning hours to have effectively deal with a river rising over 26 feet in less than 30 minutes.

As tempting as it is to look for a scapegoat…..there simply is no one to blame for this tragedy.
Dukebear1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You could certainly be right. I am a total amateur on this issue. But my common sense is technology has become so advanced that warning sirens must already be available to measure up steam water flow in a way that would warn downstream in a timely manner. I have no idea whether the failure to provide sirens could give rise to legal liability. I am ticked off because we know someone who died in the flood.

I think someone pointed out the impracticality of sirens in remote areas. The hill country is vast with many isolated areas. It would require literally thousands of sirens to cover it adequately and huge amounts of labor to maintain and test them all regularly. And the hill country is a small part of the state overall. Nobody thinks they are needed until it's too late.

I'm not making excuses. I'm pointing out how everyone thinks when they're not dealing with the catastrophe or its aftermath.

There are more practical solutions that can help: dams along rivers and creeks, even dry ones, for flood control, limiting development in the flood plane, and so on.

My home town of New Braunfels is an example. We've had major floods on the Guadalupe in 1972, 1998, & 2002. Since 1972, the city and county built small dams on the dry creeks feeding into the rivers and they worked. Those creeks did not contribute much to the later floods. After 2002, the city refused building permits in neighborhoods that experienced repeated losses. Too risky. If you drive on Common Street (heading to Schlitterbahn), you can see a large section of vacant lots & the foundations of homes that were washed away repeatedly.

To Our Patients and Community, This past weekend, we were made aware of a social media comment from one of our physicians. The

Easy to second guess - someone noted a reasonable, low cost, easy solution: everyone have an NOAA radio. Overcomes that cell tower problem and provides real-time data and warning.
