He should have prayed that this man finds his way to repentance and shame. He should have rebuked him. Look, I have no illusions about what Talarico stands for and would be like as a Senator - He'd be a woke disaster. But the reason he's going to win is because Ken is who he is and because the GOP in Texas can't think any further than they are told to by Trump. That's why Ken was acquitted by the Senate, and that's why Ken won the primary.

The reason Talarico might win is bcs Trump started another never-ending war in the middle east for Israel(something he campaigned against) and sent gas prices soaring...

If the idiotic Iran war doesnt happen, Paxton wins by at least the same margin Cruz won by in 2018.

lol. No, and yet another dumb take, but not surprising for the Brownshirts on this board.

What is dumb about it?

Use your words blue hair.

The war isn't going to cost the GOP any safe Senate seats other than in Texas. Paxton's unique ethical problems, laziness as a campaigner, and general *******ry are the reasons this is a closely contested race--not the war.

Sure it does. But the GOP has a large margin for error in Texas. Cornyn or most other GOPers would have handled Talarico easily. Paxton is just too fat a target.

"The polls showed me!"... this is your problem. You take manufactured polls created to push a narrative at face value and lack the critical thinking skills needed to understand the full picture. You are only capable of a surface level analysis of any complex issue. In this case Paxton may have trust issues to overcome w/ some voters but the extremely unpopular Iran war is also having a major impact on this midterm election and turning safe Republcians seats into true contests.

You do live using your Leftist talking points, mostly gibberish.

Socialism can only happen when imposed by force. No one will voluntarily give away everything they have year after year to benefit others who don't even try to take care of themselves. That is the reality of socialism. And it has failed every time it has been tried. That is historical fact. In the 20th century over 100 million people were killed in the name of socialism. Historical facts.

The U.S. was founded by Christian's and based on Christian principles: individual freedom, equality, etc each have a basis in scripture. The Declaration of Independence directly refers to God's role, and Jefferson was supposed to be a Deist! The entire natural law philosophy underlying the founding of the US is largely based on scripture.

These are facts.

I never defended socialism, so don't put words in my mouth. Stick to the actual claim: does atheism cause totalitarianism, or does suppressing all rival authority (religious and otherwise) cause it? You still haven't answered that.

The Declaration is a political manifesto justifying separation from Britain; it uses deist/providential language ("Nature's God," "Creator," "divine Providence") consistent with the Enlightenment, not sectarian Christianity. The Constitution is the actual founding law, and it's the one that matters for determining how government is structured. It mentions God nowhere, bars religious tests for office (Art. VI), and the First Amendment prevents establishment. If "Christian principles" were the intended legal foundation, the operative document is a strange place to leave that out entirely.

Jefferson was a Deist. And, Jefferson literally cut the miracles and resurrection out of his personal Bible, and published the "Jefferson Bible" because he rejected supernatural Christianity, while keeping Jesus's ethical teachings. Jefferson's beliefs are evidence of exactly the diversity of beliefs I've been pointing to, and against founding in scripture.

Natural law philosophy/theory as the founders used it draws on classical Greco/Roman philosophy (Aristotle, Cicero, Stoicism) as much as or more than scripture. The idea that reason alone can discern moral law independent of divine revelation is an Enlightenment concept, not a biblical one. Show me the specific scripture that states "all men are created equal."

Nebraska & Kansas are both "Likely R's"... traditionally they are "Solid R's"

Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, and Texas are all toss-ups.

Georgia and North Carolina are "Lean D"

Democrats will flip the House AND most likely the Senate too... but yeah, ok bud, the asinine war FOR ISRAEL that you support has nothing to do with it. I suppose this war of choice has nothing to do with diesel being over $8 a gallon right now in some states either.

In modern society, "secularism" has become the equivalent of a religion, in its behavior and political actions. Secularists try to impose their views on government on society far more than Christians do. We only want our 1st amendment rights, they are intolerant of people who disagree with them and often target them, especially Christians.

Governments have always legislated based on moral views. Morality is the foundation of law. America is a western country firmly within the Judeo-Christian tradition. That is historic fact and reality despite Leftists trying to deny or erase it. To the extent that the moral foundation of laws have a religious element, then the laws will necessarily reflect that. It has worked reasonably well for 250 years and there is no good reason to replace that with a different foundation. In fact, we have many reasons to avoid such dangerous experimentation.

The personality cults and tyranny of the murderous dictatorships were based on their philosophies and explicit rejection or distortion of religion and morality. The atheism of those regimes went hand in hand with their philosophy. What did Marx say about religion? How much did they oppress people for their religious faith? The connection is very real and direct. Attempts to separate the are futile and dishonest. The state or dictator became the god to replace the suppression of the one True God. It's still happening in North Korea today explicitly.

The Christian tradition that predominates is that of Jesus Christ, not any specific denomination. Theological debates among he different groups are irrelevant to any discussion of public policy. Anyone who attempts to insert them into such debates are distorting the issues.

Any attempt to remove faith from public policy discussions, a common goal of secularists and atheists, leads to the kind of tyranny and oppression that resulted in tens of millions of innocent people murdered in the 20th century. Yes, it was all in the name of socialism but it was also perpetrated by tyrannical dictatorships that tried to replace God with the state/dictator. Hence the personality cults.

As John Adams and other Founding Fathers noted, our system of government is incompatible without religion and morality. As a Puritan, he was clearly thinking in the framework of Christianity.

"Secularism has become the equivalent of a religion"
This is meaningless rhetoric. Secularism has no doctrine or creed, no deity, no theology, no worship. Secularism is a viewpoint you don't like. By your logic, if secularism is a religion, every political philosophy (libertarianism, conservatism) is a religion, which means the words lose their meaning, and you're simply using religion a nondescriptive slur.

"Secularists impose more than Christians"
What is your metric for this claim? The Texas curriculum fights (and elsewhere) are cogent examples of religiously motivated policy imposed on non-believers. Give me a specific, comparable policy example.

"America is Judeo-Christian, historic fact"
You're conflating cultural influence with the constitutional design of our founding fathers, and ignoring the very oppression from a religious state they were attempting to avoid and had escaped. Our founding fathers were culturally Christian, yet they wrote a godless Constitution. There is no mention of God, Jesus, or Christianity in the text itself. They explicitly barred religious tests for office and established a no religion amendment. If the founding fathers intended a Christian government, that was a strange way to write the founding document.

"Christian tradition of Jesus, not denomination, is what matters"
You're just dodging my question. Christian tradition of Jesus has no meaning. Whose reading alledgedly of "what Jesus taught" should govern governmental policy - civil rights, health and welfare, national defense, or any other public interest? Catholics, Othodox Christians, Southern Baptists, and mainline Protestants disagree sharply on many issues using the same Jesus. "Just follow Christ, not denominations" is an empty non unifying statement. Actual denominational, Protestant, Catholic and Othodox disagreements are exactly at the level of interpretation you're trying to dismiss.

Marx/atheism-causes-tyranny.
Correlating Marx's hostility to religion doesn't establish that atheism causes totalitarianism. The actual mechanism common to Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot was the suppression of any rival authority - religious, intellectual, familial - in favor of absolute state/personality loyalty. That's why Pol Pot targeted intellectuals and glasses-wearers as readily as monks. North Korea's state ideology, Juche, essentially functions as a state religion with a god-dictator, complete with quasi-theological doctrine. Juche is not "atheism replacing religion," it's one religion (state/dictator worship) replacing another.

John Adams quote "our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people".
You're ignoring the context of "our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people," and ignoring that Adams also signed the Treaty of Tripoli (1797), ratified unanimously by the Senate, stating outright that "the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." The founders were not univocal and cherry-picking one Adams quote while ignoring a treaty his own administration signed is the same selective-scripture problem you flagged with Talarico.

It is my observation that most Christians just want to be left alone, while most secularists insist on adherence to their point of view
historian
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Founders drew on a variety of sources for their ideas: Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian, Enlightenment, and others. John Locke might have been the most important philosopher. Jefferson quoted him in the Declaration. Montesquieu directly influenced the writing of the constitution.

As I said before, all of the fundamental principles that guided the Founding of the US have scriptural basis. Most of the Founders were devout Christians including some members of the clergy. Even the supposed Deists like Jefferson might not be what we think. Although he edited the Bible removing the supernatural elements, he also attended church regularly in the US Capitol while president and expressed faith in God on multiple occasions. It's not always to discern someone's faith who has been dead 200 years and did not make many explicit statements.

The John Adams quote is the most famous one but there are numerous others. It was not an isolated thought. For example, at the constitutional convention Ben Franklin (another likely Deist) helped the delegates through a serious impasse by suggesting that each day they begin their deliberations with a prayer. He cited the help from God the nation had received during the war.

Talarico yard signs up in Waco. No Paxton signs yet

I have seen just as many Paxton signs as Talarico signs locally.

What is more telling though is that there were Beto signs everywhere in 2018 and not even close to as many Talarico signs this time around. Maybe that changes but I doubt it. Beto had immensely more crossover appeal.

Trump is certainly protectionist, but that's a long way from autarky.

Economic nationalism is a hallmark of fascist economics. He's even gone so far as engaging in military action (Venezuela), and threatened (Greenland) for nationalist economic goals. Openly flaunts and unilaterally exits international alliances, coerces private companies under the guise of nationalist economic goals, and uses executive authority to assert power over markets. As I said, if his full rhetoric were put in place, it would be very close to the autarky of fascist regimes. Fortunately we still have laws and institutions that prevent that.

It's not just the protectionism or industrial policy, it's the rhetoric and ideology driving it that draws the parallels.

The argument is basically:
Trump is economically nationalist fascists were economically nationalist therefore Trump's economic philosophy has strong fascist parallels taken far enough, it becomes autarky.

That's a weak chain because the first characteristic isn't remotely exclusive to fascism. Economic nationalism, government pressure on private companies, executive intervention in markets, tariffs, withdrawal from international agreements, and even military action for economic interests have all been practiced by democratic, socialist, conservative, and liberal governments.

Fascism isn't just an economic system, however, if I list 99 reasons why Trump is a fascist the response will always be "but fascism is an economic system." So it makes sense to point out the parallels.

I actually agree with much of your criticism of Trump. Where I part company is the fascist label. Authoritarian strikes me as both more accurate and more useful. He clearly has authoritarian instincts and an unusually expansive view of executive power. Fascism historically carried a much larger package one-party rule, suppression of political opposition, political violence and ultimately dictatorship. Once we start arguing over whether every nationalist or protectionist policy is "fascist," I think the label creates more heat than light.

Everyone has been inundated with extremist views. Expressing anything with a word not in the extreme means you're soft on communism, fascism, racism, …..

It's a trap that traps the idiots and intelligent alike.

On the one hand, Trump clearly thinks that he is the "CEO of America" in a corporate sense. He can make every decision about anything that goes on in the country, regardless of whether the Constitution gives him that power. That is authoritarian in the way you describe it. Frankly, his view is the continuation of a trend that has gone on for over a century. It is different only in degree.

On the other hand, he is uncomfortably close to fascist tendencies asd you describe them. Threatening censorship if a network is critical of him, searching for ways to prevent people from voting, constantly demonizing every Democrat or liberal as an enemy of the state, wanting to invoke the insurrection act, letting masked, untrained ICE agents do law enforcement beyond immigration, whatever January 6 was... it is getting to be a pretty long list of what you say characterizes fascism.

"On the one hand, Trump clearly thinks that he is the "CEO of America" in a corporate sense. Nature abhors a vacuum. So do political systems.

As the legislative branch has neutered itself in exchange for largesse over the last decade or two, the executive and judicial branches have filled the vacuum.

We are in n a sad state regardless of who leads the executive branch.

Pretty much everything you say is dumb, Adolf. It's hard to remember you making a cogent, reasoned argument, not based on generalizations or emotion. Evidence is just not your thing.

But with regard to this particular issue, the polls show that it's character concerns and personal integrity that voters are concerned about with Paxton, more than anything. There aren't any polls that are showing that voters are voting Talarico because of Iran.

I realize that it is politically convenient for a neo-Nazi such as yourself to make that claim, but once again, the evidence just doesn't support your bull *****

The boomer is chimping out again...anymore puerile ad hominins from the 60 year old manchild?

"The polls showed me!"... this is your problem. You take manufactured polls created to push a narrative at face value and lack the critical thinking skills needed to understand the full picture. You are only capable of a surface level analysis of any complex issue. In this case Paxton may have trust issues to overcome w/ some voters but the extremely unpopular Iran war is also having a major impact on this midterm election and turning safe Republcians seats into true contests.

Poor little Adolf. Starts calling names as usual, and then chimps out when someone responds in like kind. You sure can dish it out, but like the coddled little millenial you are, just can't take it.

Ah, so let me get this straight. All of the polls are wrong, bought and paid for, but your personal opinion is right despite a complete absence of evidence supporting your personal opinion. It's really all about the Jews, as any deep thinker knows.

LOL. Ok, Adolf.

If what you were saying were true, then all of the Republicans running for major office would be behind in the polls. But for some reason, Paxton is the ONLY candidate trailing the Dem.

Must be the Jews, LOL.

Jews started the war and are responsible for why things are going so disastrous right now for Republicans. It is completely fair to criticize Jews and senile ******s like yourself for pushing bad policy.

The result of the bad policy is:

Nebraska & Kansas are both "Likely R's"... traditionally they are "Solid R's"

Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, and Texas are all toss-ups.

Georgia and North Carolina are "Lean D"

Democrats will flip the House AND most likely the Senate too... but yeah, ok bud, the asinine war FOR ISRAEL that you support has nothing to do with it. I suppose this war of choice has nothing to do with diesel being over $8 a gallon right now in some states either.

We know - it all Jews all the time. We get it. You believe they are responsible for the world's ills.

Same old ****, different day.

But if the Jews are the reason Paxton is losing, that still doesn't answer why all of the other Republicans in Texas running for major public office are winning. You of course ignore the evidence that's bad for your silly position.

FTR, I thought the Iran attack was a big mistake. But now that we are in it, we better win.

Indeed. And don't get me started on Atheists. They're militant proselytizers, many of them. I have a few in my family, and boy does it make the holidays fun.

More to the point, the Talarico team is trying to get Republicans not to vote in the Senate race, as it gives them a net gain if that happens. The argument about the perceived morality of one candidate or the other is nothing more in practical terms than trying to leverage an election.

The adults in the room should focus on the kinds of bills Talarico or Paxton would support if they took office. Neither is going to force someone to accept their religious beliefs, no politician frankly is much of a moral example we should follow.

But we know from history what to expect from a Republican-controlled Senate, and what to expect from a Democrat-controlled Senate. While I have grievances against a lot of Republican Senators, no rational or moral person would put Democrats in charge, or allow that to happen through not voting.

I didn't actually say you're not a Christian if you vote Talarico, though I admit it's hard for me to fathom any Christian doing so. I know misguided individuals that I would bet my life are Christians that are voting for the guy. One of them is a very dear friend.

But I think this is a misuse of the Scotsman fallacy. The definition of Christian is pretty elementary and - at least at one time - universally understood. I don't believe it depends on "where you draw the line." I don't see anyone on this thread trying to change that definition. I see them questioning how a Christian could vote for Talarico.

Are you voting for Bo French?

Yes

Why? His only policy is provocation. He is unqualified in 50 different ways. To my knowledge, Jon Rosenthal is a moderate who actually knows something about the industry he would be regulating. What would it take for you to leave a ballot blank, vote for a Libertarian or, God forbid, a Democrat?

" John Cornyn voted with Trump 99 percent of the time"

You sure like to quote Cornyn's political ads.

if that was true, why do you suppose Cornyn got handed his ass in the primary election?

Damn good question. Have been asking myself that since the primary election was over. The past five years Paxton overall has been much closer to prison than a senate seat.
