That's why the US was able to land men on the moon and bring them home safely. It's why, almost 60 years later, we are still the only nation to accomplish that. I could list a bunch more accomplishments but I don't have to. We all know them.

Meanwhile, half of Kansas City's skyline collapsed at Messi's hat trick.

" Considering how much we loathe soccer"

Ever watch a full game?

Yes, I am a big World Cup fan. My wife and I follow Germany, as I love their style of play and my wife is of German descent. I put it on the same level as the Olympics. Love seeing the different styles. This World Cup I am loving Japan they are fun to watch.

As for USA, of course I root for them. But, realistically they have little shot at getting out of the round of 32.

You're way underestimating the Pochettino/Argentina effect. Way.

Someone commented that when Europeans come to the US its usually one of the blue cesspool cities like NYC or Chicago. But because of the format of the WC. many are experiencing the heartland and just loving it. The friendly people, the food, etc.

They're loving the country. They don't fly into rural America. They're eating in the blue cities. Our country is great. I don't get all the "city" hate. These folks are staying in New York and Dallas and Seattle.

No, I am looking at the competition about to step up dramatically. USA finishes in the Round of 16 or even 8 is a great World Cup and light years from where we have been. We are a long way from the top 6. But, this is a great World Cup, Pochettino made a huge difference. Weak Group D helps, Australia and Turkey help, that will not be there next round.

Enjoy the ride... I am. World Cup will be on the backyard TV all day today.\

Too bad we can't get a US team in the Champions League, that would help. Or expand the COPA. Something to get the attention higher. Until a Messi can't come here and score 6 goals at will our Pro soccer will not produce the interests. Most Soccer fans in the US follow foreign teams because the product is so much better.

I am with you. I love visting Seattle, LA, SD, and even Boston (NY raised, so it is tough...). All have great food, cool history.

I believe we have a tendency to undersell our Nation with this Blue/Red split crap. Some have become rough such as SF and Chicago. But, they always had rough areas. We need to be more united, the World Cup fans I have talked to are having a blast.

I am still trying to figure out what is and is not a foul. Some are obvious, like kicks to someone's leg, since that is likely to injure and so would get the yellow card. But there's a lot of physical grabbing, shoving, and near-wrestling that gets no official attention.

That which does not kill me, will try again and get nastier

Tell me about it!! Last night Ivory Coast and Germany was horrible. Germany was getting robbed. It has been inconsistent. The offside camera has helped.

I've not been in Nashville in 20 years. Externally, it looks likes it's become a hopping town.

man, we need some good PR. Glad we have had the opportunity for folks to see real Americans and understand we are not our administration. American and citizens of the world coming together to experience different cultures. Well done US.

Ummm have you missed this thread??? They are in those cities but they are also all over in small towns, the entire DFW area. Especially Fort Worth. Plenty have stayed in grapevine and other "smaller" towns of the metroplex. Plenty have posted stuff in this thread about the fans driving between cities and stopping along the way.

So it isn't just "blue" cities they are seeing.

If things go the way some are projecting I think our chances to make it out of the round of 32 could be good. Some predictions show us having to play Bosnia which is a realistic chance of a win.

I've seen YouTube videos of Europeans visiting small towns in Alabama & Texas (ie Brady) and the suburbs of Atlanta. The experiences were almost completely positive.

Their accounts include much humor such as their surprise when they found out that yellow school buses are real, how important it is to have air conditioning, how big pick up trucks can be, and so on.

Here's a video about 10 American traits that confound Europeans:

One of my favorite clips was the Italian young man who was shocked that he can get unlimited beverage refills (in other videos).
