Now about that USAID pandemic specialist in China that the administration pulled out. Just a few months before this broke out. The liaison guy that could have been on the ground, verifying data. Hmmm?

The Chinese "Killary-ed" their physicians. Do you really think an liaison guy would have made a difference?

Get real.

Maybe. Thanks to the foolish acts of the interim govt we'll never know.

Or we can apply common sense. Just saying.

Common sense is having an expert at ground zero. Just saying.

You are right, GT. Baytown smells a bit like Detroit in some places, but that's as close as they get.

Certainly our port does a whole lot more business, and we are actually far more diversified than Detroit.

He's only interested in defending Democrats. You could also ask why in a criticism of the legislative branch he changed the subject to the executive. He's a Democrat. He wants to protect Democrats.

I didn't defend anyone. I did point out a problem overlooked by the poster I replied to. You didn't point it out. Why not?
You did. You employed good old soviet style Whataboutism. It's the defense used for the indefensible. You knew very well that the criticism was specific to legislative actions (which a lawyer may be expected to know are different from executive actions) and yet you launched into your reflexive Trump bashing - poorly reasoned Trump bashing at that.

How much of today's news is about above? How much do republicans do the same? That's what Trump is up against. That's what he calls "draining the swamp"

We've got to clean all this up before we can go anywhere! Pelosi's were worth nothing, relatively, when she came in Congress and now worth $160,000,000? Come on, this must stop!

We'll have to have a laws disqualifying any person employed by government from their job, if they're receiving more than their paycheck because of said government job. No friend or family member of government worker can be employed due to said government worker

They are only there to serve us, not themselves or their family or friends

Detroit doesn't smell. It looks like basically all large urban centers. Some super ****ty parts of town, some unbelievably nice parts of town, some industry and a **** load of suburbs.

I assure you the ****ty parts of Detroit are no better/worse than the ****ty parts of Houston. The nice parts of Detroit rival the nicest parts of anywhere in the US.

When someone says Houston will look like Detroit what they are trying to say is that Detroit is a burned out, run down **** hole...and parts of it are absolutely that...just like parts of Houston. It's just that people on this board don't live in or have reason to go to those parts of town to see the comparison.

The Bush-era program pandemic research program, Predict, was cancelled by this administration. Pointing that out is not Whataboutism in any form or fashion. Neither did I defend anyone. I attacked your boy. You won't get any concessions from me for pointing out where a huge error was made, directly related to the issue at hand.

Why don't you address the issue instead of pulling out inappropriate random talking points from the GOP?

Certainly there are places in both towns which can be compared, but my point is that it's false to generally call the two towns the same, which is what 'lots of Houston already does' is trying to do.

The two cities are very different in a lot of respects; different primary industries, demographic spread, different geography, weather, and so on. Houston also learned a hard lesson in the 1980s, and while Houston is still a huge player in Energy, there are a lot of alternative energy companies in addition to a broader spread of industries in Houston than in Detroit.

Detroit is actually in a unique condition. Dun & Bradstreet has an annual symposium where they discuss economic conditions in different regions of the US, and in major cities. Detroit is always mentioned for it's streak of population losses. The last D&B seminar I attended was back in 2008, but at that time Detroit was in a 27-year streak of losing population; every year more people left Detroit than came to Detroit. This has damaging effects on real estate values, suicide rates, and other major indices.

Anyone trying to claim Houston is going to be just like Detroit is making absurd assumptions.
nein51

You're reading way too much in to what people mean when they say like Detroit. No one is claiming Houston and Detroit have similar weather and I think you're smart enough to know that. They are claiming Houston will become a "hood" and I think you know that.

Population loss in Detroit is a very real problem because the industries there dried up and they weren't replaced. There is a very serious brain drain problem.

You missed 90% of my post if all you saw was weather.

The most important difference between Detroit and Houston, is that Detroit depended on the car industry long after US car manufacturing started a decline, then spent literally decades in denial. Houston 2020 is far more diversified in type and size of industrial companies than Houston 1980, and so while the current crisis is doing damage, that damage is temporary and limited compared to Detroit's condition.

Sweden Says Controversial Covid-19 Strategy Is Proving Effective

Sweden has left its schools, gyms, cafes, bars and restaurants open throughout the spread of the pandemic. Instead, the government has urged citizens to act responsibly and follow social distancing guidelines.

As of Sunday, Sweden had reported 1,540 deaths tied to Covid-19, an increase of 29 from Saturday. That's considerably more than in the rest of Scandinavia, but much less than in Italy, Spain and the U.K., both in absolute and relative terms.

Tegnell isn't the only high-level official in Sweden to claim the country may be over the worst.
"The trend we have seen in recent days, with a more flat curve -- where we have many new cases, but not a daily increase -- is stabilizing," Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of the microbiology department at Sweden's Public Health Authority, said on Friday. "We are seeing the same pattern for patients in intensive care."

The places hardest hit by Covid-19 in Detroit are mostly the areas people would associate with "ugly" Detroit. Wayne County is the hot spot, and I read where the zip code with the most cases was 48235, which is the area south of 8 Mile Road and one of the poorest and densely populated areas. It's sad the impact on close quarter housing, because that disproportionately hits the poor and elderly (nursing home/assisted living).

That area is mostly black and middle eastern. It's not the worst part of Detroit but it's definitely not a good part of town. I wonder if the project housing there is the biggest impact.

Crenshaw is clearly a good all around person in general. He owned Maher on that one. Crenshaw did Joe Rogan's podcast recently as well. Another good interview, however he stumbled on his universal healthcare argument, badly. He's got some decent ideas, but healthcare in it's current form in the US is hard to defend.

Perhaps it is just because Sunday is a slower day, but we received some good signs on the data today.

For the whole US, we saw the number of new cases drop to 24,601 and we saw the number of deaths for the day drop to 1,759. . And for Texas, we saw the number of new cases drop from 737 to 502 for Sunday. In addition, the number of deaths dropped from an average of 29 to 17. For comparison purposes, Texas averages 10 deaths each day due to motor vehicle accidents on its roads.

Because at his core Buddha is liberal and another one here that isn't a US citizen and backs socialized(government backed!) healthcare. He doesn't care, nor does he comprehend our government can't afford healthcare and this would destroy individual medical care for our citizens
