Get real.
Maybe. Thanks to the foolish acts of the interim govt we'll never know.
Or we can apply common sense. Just saying.

Common sense is having an expert at ground zero. Just saying.

You are right, GT. Baytown smells a bit like Detroit in some places, but that's as close as they get.GrowlTowel said:nein51 said:Aliceinbubbleland said:

It doesn't. But thanks.
You did. You employed good old soviet style Whataboutism. It's the defense used for the indefensible. You knew very well that the criticism was specific to legislative actions (which a lawyer may be expected to know are different from executive actions) and yet you launched into your reflexive Trump bashing - poorly reasoned Trump bashing at that.quash said:Bearitto said:GrowlTowel said:quash said:Now about that USAID pandemic specialist in China that the administration pulled out. He's only interested in defending Democrats. You could also ask why in a criticism of the legislative branch he changed the subject to the executive. He's a Democrat. He wants to protect Democrats.
I didn't defend anyone. I did point out a problem overlooked by the poster I replied to. You didn't point it out. Why not?

Certainly our port does a whole lot more business, and we are actually far more diversified than Detroit.

The Bush-era program pandemic research program, Predict, was cancelled by this administration. Pointing that out is not Whataboutism in any form or fashion. Neither did I defend anyone. I attacked your boy. You won't get any concessions from me for pointing out where a huge error was made, directly related to the issue at hand.Bearitto said:You did. Certainly there are places in both towns which can be compared, but my point is that it's false to generally call the two towns the same, which is what 'lots of Houston already does' is trying to do.nein51 said:Oldbear83 said:You are right, GT. Detroit doesn't smell. It looks like basically all large urban centers. Some super ****ty parts of town, some unbelievably nice parts of town, some industry and a **** load of suburbs.
I assure you the ****ty parts of Detroit are no better/worse than the ****ty parts of Houston. The nice parts of Detroit rival the nicest parts of anywhere in the US.
When someone says Houston will look like Detroit what they are trying to say is that Detroit is a burned out, run down **** hole...and parts of it are absolutely that...just like parts of Houston. It's just that people on this board don't live in or have reason to go to those parts of town to see the comparison.
You missed 90% of my post if all you saw was weather.nein51 said:
You're reading way too much in to what people mean when they say like Detroit. No one is claiming Houston and Detroit have similar weather and I think you're smart enough to know that. They are claiming Houston will become a "hood" and I think you know that.
Population loss in Detroit is a very real problem because the industries there dried up and they weren't replaced. There is a very serious brain drain problem.

Sweden Says Controversial Covid-19 Strategy Is Proving Effective
Sweden has left its schools, gyms, cafes, bars and restaurants open throughout the spread of the pandemic. Instead, the government has urged citizens to act responsibly and follow social distancing guidelines.
As of Sunday, Sweden had reported 1,540 deaths tied to Covid-19, an increase of 29 from Saturday. That's considerably more than in the rest of Scandinavia, but much less than in Italy, Spain and the U.K., both in absolute and relative terms.
Tegnell isn't the only high-level official in Sweden to claim the country may be over the worst.
"The trend we have seen in recent days, with a more flat curve -- where we have many new cases, but not a daily increase -- is stabilizing," Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of the microbiology department at Sweden's Public Health Authority, said on Friday. "We are seeing the same pattern for patients in intensive care."

The places hardest hit by Covid-19 in Detroit are mostly the areas people would associate with "ugly" Detroit. Wayne County is the hot spot, and I read where the zip code with the most cases was 48235, which is the area south of 8 Mile Road and one of the poorest and densely populated areas. It's sad the impact on close quarter housing, because that disproportionately hits the poor and elderly (nursing home/assisted living).

Another good interview, however he stumbled on his universal healthcare argument, badly. No it isn't. Why do you think our healthcare has a lower death rate from the Kung Fru than the rest of the western nations? "Socialized" means ****ty for all.
