Seems like anytime anyone posts anything marginally critical of Trump, the automatic response of his supporters is "TDS!".

What the hell is that supposed to mean? I think it means "Trump Derangement Syndrome", or something like that, meaning that anybody who criticizes Trump is deranged.

Come on, guys. We're all supposed to be college-educated to some degree. Is this the best you can do in the realm of political discourse? Are you not capable of reasoning? Of some original thought?

When the only response that you can come up with is "TDS!", it looks to me like a concession that you have lost the argument. And, frankly, it makes you look stupid.

No, it makes you look stupid to have TDS. It's not a term applied to every criticism of Trump, it's reserved for those that are so enraged at the very sight or sound of him that they simply lose all ability of rational thought. Do you have it? You can self-diagnose. Go to your profile page and count how many of your posts criticize the president and compare them to how many of your posts offer positive words about the president. If more than 80% of those posts are negative, well.... you got it! Self-quarantine immediately.

I think the OP protests too much.

'TDS' is sometimes used too freely as a put-down of criticism, yes, but more often it's recognition of hypocrisy and a near-hysteria on the Left. An easy way to test for TDS is to compare reactions to something said or done by Trump when a Liberal has done something very much the same. Another easy test is to observe obsessive behavior on honest actions, such as the very clear fact that Democrats, even now, cannot accept the fact that Trump legitimately won the 2016 election.

The claims made by Midnight Rider that TDS on the Left somehow invalidates observation of that behavior ... do not make sense.

I doubt this thread will go anywhere productive, but the OP is off base here and that's a fact.

Did not vote for Obama either time. He was an empty suit but I supported him and wanted him to succeed because he was our President.

Trump does not get the same courtesy from those that did not vote for him. Plain and simple.

I think to be fair in hindsight, some here that throw out the "TDS" label freely at the hint of any criticism should have been diagnosed as having "ODS" a few years ago. I'll assume you are smart enough to be able to figure out what the "O" in that means.

Trump does some things good and some things bad, but the disappointment I see in some posters is that defense of him is done for some things that just don't deserve any support, and it is obvious to anyone not wearing orange colored glasses.

I think any terms like "TDS" or "ODS" are really childish attempts to ridicule the poster verses to legitimately debate the issue. But that happens quite frequently in this forum whether it be political or something else.

I agreed. But is jupiter demonstrates, it is virtually impossible to legitimately debate an issue with 99% of the people on this board.

I think so too, and in fact many of the people who pop off from time to time will be civil to reasonable discussions.

There are only a few here who will never be interested in a civil discussion at all.

TDS has some similarities to alcoholism. The alcoholic continues to go back to alcohol while denying they have a problem. The sufferer of TDS continues to go back to CNN while denying they have a problem. The TDS sufferer and alcoholic are most often the last to admit they have a problem.

There's that and there's also the visceral and personal nature of the hatred for Trump on the left that is very different than what the opponents of Obama exhibited. Like almost all other conservatives I passionately disagreed with Obama's liberal, socialistic policies that were clearly bad for the country, but also like almost all other conservatives, I didn't hate him personally or deny the fact that he was legitimately POTUS during his two terms. Not so for many of the opponents of Trump that obviously hate him personally to the point that they have never accepted the fact that he is the duly and fairly elected POTUS and they furthermore attempt to concoct completely fabricated and fraudulent reasons to have his presidency nullified. It would probably be shocking to know how many of these people would actually celebrate if Trump was assassinated.

TDS is real. No, it doesn't apply to everyone that simply disagrees with Trump's policies, but it does very much apply to the venomous haters out there - some of whom post regularly on this board.

At least old and disabled people in the state of Texas now know where they stand with Lt. Gov. Patrick: They're expendable if their health and safety becomes an economic threat.

The irony is that old and disabled people aren't the only ones who get the virus and the whole protocol of sheltering in place is designed to protect EVERYONE. Even people who survive the coronoirus face weeks of being too sick to work, care for children, etc. I predict some will suffer permanent deficits--possibly lung damage or weakened cardiopulmonary systems = shorter lifespan after survival.

Plus, Patrick offers a false choice--send people back to work so the economy can thrive and risk what he implies will be a few more deaths (mostly people who aren't "productive"--elderly and the disabled) or self-quarantine and suffer dire economic consequences.

The dire economic consequences are going to come regardless. Either they come now, with people sheltering in place and reducing the spread of the disease, and we save more lives, or they come later, with a higher death toll, as businesses are shut down because too many employees are too sick to work, which also risks the collapse of local healthcare systems and the decimation of trained healthcare workers whose exposure is greatly increased by a higher caseload and the need to work long hours to treat people whose lives can be saved.

The lack of foresight and degree of selfishness Patrick's statement reflects deserves the cartoon Jupiter posted. The people jabbing at Jupiter (who obviously knows something about the spread of infectious diseases) haven't thought through all of the bad choices we're presented and truly understood that it's either shut down now and contain Covid or be shut down later when so many people are sick the shutdown is involuntary.

TDS is real.

Many on the left and some on the right (mostly "Never Trumpers") have such a visceral hatred of the president that they say and do things out of character that often blows away societal norms. Their behavior often defies logic and disregards similar (and sometimes worse) actions done by others. Hence the term "derangement."

Trump is a master at baiting those that suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome for all to see.

Unfortunately, this is not really unique to Trump. Bush received pretty similar treatment IIRC. I realize this is naive, but if we all could agree only to discuss reality vs. accusations, we could have healthier discussions. But we're all addicted to winning at all cost.
