No, we wouldn't care as much if they were targeting mercenaries. That's the point, they are deniable and more expendable. The real kickers are not briefing the UK, and Trump advocating on Russia's behalf with the G7 while this was going on. He can claim he wasn't briefed (which is different from not being told), but somebody knew.
It just seems interesting to me that kneeling during a song is a bridge too far for a certain group but Russia targeting uniformed US (and UK) soldiers warrants barely even a shrug.
I noticed the new DNI would not comment when asked if this latest Russian act of aggression was in Trump's PDB. Since he is notorious for not reading them, it's safe to assume Trump was briefed just as all of our NATO allies were briefed. He just didn't read it.
