Baylor (USA) dropped their 3rd straight game in the Global JAM in Toronto 73-71 to a good Brazil squad.  The Bears had five players in double figures scoring with Keyonte George (14), Jordan Turner (13), Dale Bonner (12), Joshua Ojianwuna (11) and Jalen Bridges (10).

Baylor will await tonight’s result to see who they play in the semifinal bracket on Saturday.

Positives:

  • Another valiant defensive effort.  The Bears turn Brazil over 18 times and did a terrific job on the MVP of Brazil’s top pro league Yago Dos Santos.  They turned him over 8 times and held him to 13 points but unfortunately 6 of those points came in the final minute of the game.  Dale Bonner’s defense in particular was superb but also Jalen Bridges did a nice job jumping passing lanes to get steals (4).
  • Loved seeing Jordan Turner have some good moments to build his confidence.  He hit some clutch 3 pointers and sank two pressure free throws late in the game.
  • Despite being the main focus of scouting reports the last two games, Keyonte George continues to find ways to score.  He got fouled at the end of regulation which should have resulted in 3 free throw attempts but the refs swallowed their whistles.
  • Team chemistry and effort looks strong.  Joshua Ojianwuna continues to impress with his activity and ability to finish around the rim.
  • Despite depth issues and tired legs from a quick turnaround, the battle on the glass was 45-44 in Brazil’s favor.  Baylor had been outrebounded significantly in each of the first two games.

Needs Work:

  • A lot of players are being put in spots to do things that they are not used to doing.  Having guys like Flagler, Cryer and Love are huge pressure release valves.  This experience will be invaluable during the season if there are injuries or foul trouble and their needs to be more reliance on the roster we are watching in Toronto.
  • Got abused a bit in the paint:  40-22 advantage for Brazil in that area.
  • Obviously finishing games, the last two contests we had late leads and need to learn how to win these close ones.
