Just win Bears!

When adjusting for homefield advantage, Vegas thinks Cincy is about a field goal better than Baylor right now. That's wildly different from the way most folks around here would gauge the difference. I think it's in part because the Bearcats haven't been forced to prove themselves against great competition:

SoS (to date) vs SoS (remaining) per ESPN:
Cincy (6-1): #77 vs #26
Baylor (4-3): #51 vs #41

They'll move the ball on us pretty effectively, and we're too thin on defense to expect a barrage of generated turnovers. That means this game will come down to how consistently the Offense can move the chains and stack scoring drives while not turning the ball over. If they can do both things (A), the Bears will pull out a gutsy win that no one expects. If they can't it will be another loss, quite possibly our ugliest of the season (B), but since the universe seems to want to maximize every single Baylor fan's misery i'm half expecting another gut-wrencher that they almost pull off.

(A): Bears 45 - Bearcats 32
(B): Bears 24 - Bearcats 42

ADDENDUM: if the season pattern of offensive inconsistency does rear its ugly head once again, for god's sake - LET PALMER WILLIAMS WORK! The kid is an absolute weapon and we should be using him instead of creating short fields on TODs.

Bearknuckle, So, A - Bears win and I'm happy or B) I net 2 Hundo but am sad

But I gotta say: you crack me up with the whole because we are thin on Defense we won't create "a barrage of turnovers" ha! ha! We haven't created a "barrage of turnovers" since 2021!

Still enjoy reading your stuff - some of it is great - and some of it is absolutely laughable. One question and be honest: Are you in any way employed or associated with the Baylor Athletic Social Media Department?

lmao no. I'm just a knowledgeable fan who chooses to acknowledge the positives rather than simply regress into the negatives, and that rubs some folks the wrong way especially if I have the temerity to defend my position, lol.

But I absolutely get where you're coming from on the defensive side!

"Injuries happen*", of course they do it's a high impact contact sport. But losing 3 starters for the season by the 1st quarter of the 4th game is not typical for most teams most years. It just isn't and every knowledgeable fan here knows that. But as example, our opponent this week has exactly zero key injuries per SI:
Quote:

UC has no key players even listed on the report, as they continue to reap the benefits of all the recovery technology inside their new team facility.

This year really was in fact set up to be different on defense, though.

Devin Turner, last season in the Big 10: 33 solo tackles, 18 assists, 3 INTs, 1 TD. The year before he had no INTs but nearly 50% more tackles. We miss the production he'd have brought to STAR, badly. When he went down the whole defense's ceiling lowered.

That's in no small part because of a major knock-on effect: instead of getting to shine in a more natural spot at FS, Carl Williams had to come back into the STAR role and his health didn't hold up there. He's been effectively OFS even if he's not listed that way yet.

T. Barnes was starting next to Thomas and playing well until he went OFS early vs ASU. Phoenix Jackson was just starting to show his potential as a pass rusher until he went OFS vs Samford.

We couldn't afford more depth in the Spring to backfill the losses of Turner, Bett and Foster with players of equal caliber, and obviously we can't replace Barnes, Jackson and Williams at all at this point, even if we had the money to replace at value.

It is what it is...but, fwiw, it's not some irrational homer talk to say that with better injury luck this defense would be performing at a much higher level.

*EDIT(add): sorry if the quotation marks are confusing - not trying to put those words in your mouth, it's just the most common response when injuries are brought up as explanation for lack of production etc.

Ok - riddle me this: We have had a lot of injuries on the D side of the ball - they have been more than what you would normally expect - and as you pointed out Cincy is coming in with no key personnel listed on injury list - therefore is it a fair question to ask why? Why so many injuries? Is it A) just bad luck? B) lack of S&C accountability? C) maybe not enough live hitting in practice - I know that sounds counterintuitive - but I have always thought there was a relationship between pre-season and early season soft practices and future injuries and soft play gets you hurt - dogging it in practice gets you injured

I think it is a combo of all of these - therefore I hold coaching accountable for abnormal amounts of injury.

Fair question: I honestly don't know why we've had such bad luck for years now...'23 had similar levels in terms of late preseason OFS losses - our NT1 & NT2 were both lost before game 1. I know the Fudge Center is amazing, so I'd be surprised if Cincy has equipment we don't.

As for blame in the broadest sense, i started a whole thread on that topic, but the TLDR is it's Dave's fault but at the CEO side of being an HC, not schematically. I get why that all is enough reason for folks to want to move on, especially given that it's seemingly on our offense to 'save' the season when our coach's strength is Defense.

I'm still open to seeing how this season finishes before casting him out, though...before the season I thought we'd go 9-3 or 8-4. If we can still get to 8-4 despite the terrible injury luck, that would be no small feat of coaching.

Gotta hedge our bets. If we lose, it's because of the injuries. If we win, it's incredible coaching and Aranda is a god

For Linda & Mack, this week is basically an "open date".
Baylor is comfortably tucked in at #8 in Big12 standings (middle of the pack)… their historical place to be. Technically, they only have to worry about outcomes in Iowa St/Utah and KS St/KS to potentially lose their positioning. Baylor's loss at Cinci should hold steady. Linda and Mack will only have to deal with disgruntled Fans. The Money$$ folks, BOR and Admin will be relieved. Linda can continue to devote the majority of her attention to February's SING function. Mack will just scratch his crotch and enjoy a beverage of choice.

Big Noon Wankoff, college foootball shows. I really just don't get it. Grownass men actling like high school kids yelling at each other, not saying anything particularly useful. They are a reflection of the decline of quality sports discussion.

Well as a Baylor fan you need some sort of entertaining diversion before accepting the upcoming ar$e whipping. The bears did get a mention as discussion of Cinci's game basically, as the sacrificial lamb.

Sorry, Baylor fans.

You have 2 units: Offense, which is by far your strong point, and Defense, which is nothing more than awful.

You are on the road.

Why wouldn't you want to attempt to jump on the opponent and get momentum right off the start by putting your best unit on the field? Instead, we're just gonna spot them 7 and let them start with momentum.
