Postgame Thoughts: #1 Baylor takes down Texas 52-45

#1 Baylor (22-1; 11-0) extends their winning streak to 21 games as they never trailed in Austin and held on to a 52-45 win against the unranked Longhorns (14-10; 4-7).  Next up for the Bears is a match-up against #14 West Virginia on Saturday at 3pm CST in Waco.

Observations

  • Baylor held Shaka Smart to their second lowest offensive output in the Shaka Smart era- 45 points.
  • Texas’ lowest offensive output in the Shaka Smart era came on January 6 in Waco- 44 points.
  • Scott Drew is 9-2 against Shaka Smart and has won 9 of the last 10.
  • Offense was rough but in large part to how hard Texas played defensively I believe.  Texas played like a desperate team and the Bears never trailed.
  • A lot of things to clean up but we had two guys get injured in this game- Gillespie (ankle) and Teague (wrist) and were able to power through it with a tough road win.
  • If you can’t trust Scott Drew on offense, who can you trust?  We will get better in that area.  I was happy to see the defense return to form.
  • Better free throw shooting (75%) tonight.
  • Key contributions from the bench- Bandoo (10 points) and Matt Mayer (4 points; 2 rebounds; 1 assist)
  • You can’t go 38-1 until you go 23-1, beat West Virginia!
  • 21 wins in a row, savor it... It is hard to get everyone’s A game and still win.  Speaking of A games, Baylor has won an incredible 10 “A” games according to KenPom.  10-0 in A games and 1-1 in “B” games.  5 “A” games remaining in the regular season.  What a challenge!

Any word on the extent of the injuries?

I haven't heard anything more on the injuries either, but my guess is if one or both of them were serious (meaning missing games) we would've heard by now. Did concern me a bit that after injuries Gillespie didn't seem to be as effective as he usually is and Teague only attempted one 3 which was way off. Hopefully the affects on both of them will be short lived.
