Baylor at Oklahoma Primer

After ending a five-game losing streak with a win over Kansas State, Baylor football hits the road to face the defending Big 12 Champions and current Big 12 favorite the Oklahoma Sooners.

The 32-31 victory over the Wildcats last Saturday gave Baylor their first one-score victory of the season after dropping contests to West Virginia, Iowa State and Texas Tech by a combined 14 points with none coming by more than seven points.

Meanwhile, the Sooners are red hot after dropping back-to-back conference games to begin Big 12 play. They have won five in a row including their last four by an average of 33 points. The streak is highlighted by a 41-13 beatdown of rival Oklahoma State.

The one kink in the armor for the Sooners, however, could be the lack of practice time after dealing with COVID-19 issues where a large portion of the team missed time and forced a matchup with West Virginia to be postponed. OU is expected to be without a number players including start linebacker Nik Bonitto who leads the team with 6.5 sacks.

After dealing with a large breakout earlier in the season, Baylor should be in the clear in terms of a large number of players missing the game due to isolation or positive tests. The Bears, however, have seen plenty of injury attrition this season including the loss of defensive star and starting linebacker Terrel Bernard to a shoulder injury.

Baylor vs. Oklahoma Prediction

Written by Sam Bradshaw (S11)

Oklahoma is probably the best team in the conference if everyone played a best of seven against everyone.   They have the best offense and a solid defense with plenty of athleticism.   Under normal circumstances they should beat a Baylor team that has a new staff, a wildly changing lineup, and some key injuries like Terrell Bernard, Gabe Hall, and others.

However ,OU is dealing with an unpredictable COVID & contact tracing situation of their own so their usual players and execution may be missing.   Baylor has a chance with the right bounces this weekend as a weaker team in KSU beat OU in a similar way.   However, I am predicting based on a full lineup and I think OU would normally win handily.

Baylor 21, Oklahoma 40

These announcers are smoking crack if they think ou has a relevant statement for CFP. Ain't nobody from the Big 12 coming close.

Great effort Bears! Very proud of you guys.

You mean the defense. The offense is pathetic. Holding Oklahoma to 10 at the half and 27 in the game was huge for the defense though. So proud of those guys

Apparently, the referee is an OU fan.

Because they called two correct PI calls? You are a complete idiot.

No, because he was cheering and congratulating an OU player after the touchdown.

I thought the calls were warranted.

I am an incomplete idiot.

The defense was so outstanding tonight. Bring that same effort against OSU and maybe we will end on a positive note. That is assuming that the offense shows a pulse...

Imagine if CAB had this defense. We'd be basking in glory right now.

We'd probably be talking 8-0 right about now.

Part of why the defense played so well tonight was that the offense--despite not scoring for ****--actually possessed the ball for a while and gave the defense some rest. That would not happen in a quick-fire Briles offense. You can't just slot these things in and expect the same results.

Didn't realize Briles ran such a TOP oriented offense!

Maybe you need to spend more time looking at game film from Art Briles 2010-2015 Baylor teams.

He usually didn't. I cannot tell you how many times we won under Briles with less ToP than the opponent--or how many times TV announcers would talk about that and simply proclaim that Briles did not care about ToP. Then again, if the team is ahead by 2-3 scores at half time and generally manages to maintain a double digit lead to the end, it's hard to argue with that.

Baylor's 2014 win in Norman is an outlier for multiple reasons: It's the only time we have ever won there. Baylor totally dominated the Sooners in that one, with a 45-0 run in 3 quarters. It was a down year for OU (they finished 8-5). They were NOT one of the leaders of the conference, that was Baylor & TCU. The Baylor v TCU game overshadowed the RRR on October 11--it's very unusual that any Big 12 game would. And so on.

Got my arse handed to me in a purely hypothetical conversation?

My contention is that this is a different team than a Briles team. And creating a Frankenstein of the two wouldn't automatically yield the results you'd want because they operate differently. Seems like a rational take, but hey, if y'all want to keep fantasizing otherwise that's fine.

Mono you sound like a damn tv personality that didn't actually watch the games. We had a top 10 rushing team under a Briles most years. That's the epitome of time of possession. The quick threat score was what kept you glued to your seat and got all the glamour. You don't rattle off 90+ plays again without possessing the ball.

Great overall effort by the Baylor Bears, especially on defense, holding the Oklahoma Sooners to less than 30 points Saturday night in Norman. Baylor quickly became one-dimensional on offense, and Charlie Brewer (despite 2 INT's) gave a heroic effort, finishing 30-of-56 passing for 263 yards and 2 TD's (1 passing & 1 rushing) in the 27-14 Baylor loss to #11 Oklahoma on FOX. Baylor actually finished with more total yards than OU, 288-269. Baylor also had more 1st Downs, 19-16. Despite the loss, I'm a proud Baylor football fan, as I go to sleep late tonight in Waco.
