There are two bands tied for the best show I've seen, because they were great in totally different ways.

First is Anthrax on their Worship Music tour. Maybe it helped that it was a thrash-a-thon with both Death Angel and Testament to ramp everyone up before they even took the stage, but Anthrax absolutely brought the house down. I have never experience so much energy from a band and crowd.

Second is King Diamond making his first tour after a long break following his heart surgery. That dude's voice is just unreal. You would think at his age and following life-threatening health issues, his live performances would be on the decline. I assure you, they are not. But really what makes King Diamond shows so great is that the production is SO BIG. Awesome sets, including a massive gate at the front of the stage at the beginning and getting to see "Grandma" cremated. At one point, King took a drink from a glass of water, then tossed it in the air behind his back. The drummer smashed the falling glass with his drumstick without missing a beat.

Anyone into Royal Blood? Not metal, but heavy. Saw them opening for Queens of the Stone Age and they blew me away. They make a lot of racket for just two dudes.

Unpopular opinion: almost a year later edition;

The new Slipknot album is better than the new Tool album. Fight me.

It seems like a minor quibble to me when we are about to get some new albums from both Nile and Novembers Doom. The songs they have released so far are awesome.





It probably won't be as high on my list, but new Borknagar is pretty good too.

I have not paid much attention to them post-Watershed. I won't say their new music is bad, but it dispenses with the balance and juxtaposition of the extreme with the progressive, which were the very things that made me a big Opeth fan. With all the other great metal out there, new Opeth just hasn't been much of a priority for me.

If you are in the mood for something a bit different, I just heard this album last night and thought it was outstanding. This is avant garde / black metal that is inspired by the compositions of Igor Stravinsky!
