Smart Bearforce. I sure wish we had a lower draft pick.

Tom Brady was a 6th rounder. So I wouldn't say you couldn't draft a good QB at 17.

So you pick the ONE biggest outlier of all time as an example?

Winning by cheating is just as impressive as winning fairly, probably even more so. Your opponent was better than you in every way, and you beat them with your brain.

I would take this one in a heartbeat. You have 2, maybe 3 starters and 2 DL rotational guys

Who, and at what spot, is a realistic trade scenario for the Cowboys to move up in this year's draft? E. J. WILSON / DENVER, CO

David: That's a good question, and there aren't a ton of options. It's not going to be a quarterback. This is a talent-rich draft at offensive tackle, but the Cowboys don't really need one. It seems non-sensical to trade up for a wide receiver. If they were going to do it, I'd guess it'd be a defensive lineman. Perhaps if Auburn's Derrick Brown or South Carolina's Javon Kinlaw started to slide, they could pull the trigger and jump up a few spots. If they like LSU's K'Lavon Chaisson, he could represent the best bet to get a pass rusher with upside. Those would be my guesses.

Rob: There's still a lot of time left before we can have a good feel for the first round, but let's have a little fun here. Right now I'd be more interested in moving down a little if the first round unfolds in a way where there's a cluster of available prospects the Cowboys like. Why? Well, just look at the number of roster holes/potential holes they've got at the moment. And it just seems like the Cowboys rarely have more than maybe 20 first-round grades on prospects in a given year anyway.

Editor's note: This has been updated since it was first published.

After not having a first-round pick in last year's draft because of the Amari Cooper trade, the Cowboys are back in the first round in 2020 with the 17th overall pick.

After an 8-8 season and some possible key names departing in free agency, the Cowboys have several positions they could address in the first round.

Will Jeff Heath hitting free agency, could the Cowboys finally make a move at safety? Will Byron Jones' possible departure cause them to look for a new corner? Or will Dallas look to the other side of the ball and try to shore up its receiving corps?

With the NFL draft just under two months away, here's what some mock drafts have the Cowboys doing in the first round:

John Owning, The Dallas Morning News (March 4)
The pick: CB C.J. Henderson Florida
Notable: "As good as the combine was (more details on that here), Henderson's coverage ability may be even better, as the Florida product may be the best pure cover cornerback outside of Ohio State's Jeffrey Okudah.
"Henderson has the processing ability to play any coverage, but he undoubtedly thrives in man coverage, where his quick feet enable him to mirror and stay in-phase with receivers. Henderson is extremely effective in press coverage, where his length and timing enable him to disrupt the time of a receivers' route at the line of scrimmage - check out the above clip of Henderson disrupting LSU WR Jamarr Chase, who multiple CBs said was the best WR they faced in college, at the line of scrimmage."

COWBOYS
Film room: Cowboys add perfect Byron Jones replacement, more defensive pieces in 3-round mock draft
BY JOHN OWNING
Matt Miller, Bleacher Report (March 2)
The pick: CB C.J. Henderson Florida
Notable: "CJ Henderson has ideal size and very good instincts to play in a man coverage defense. The main questions are his penchant for playing too far off in coverage while trying to bait quarterbacks into mistakes and his lack of prowess as a tackler. Both can be fixed at the next level.
"Henderson is ready to be a Day 1 starter in the NFL, something the Cowboys need with Jones expected to find his way out of town."
Todd McShay, ESPN (March 3)

The pick: S Xavier McKinney Alabama
Notable: "Xavier Woods is a capable safety, but with Darian Thompson, Kavon Frazier and Jeff Heath all pending free agents, the other spot is wide open. Dallas hasn't had a high-impact safety like McKinney, who had 95 tackles and pulled in three interceptions last season, in years. His 4.63 40 time was a bit disappointing, but McKinney does have some range to his game, and he is super instinctive."
Mel Kiper, ESPN (Feb. 18)
The pick: S Xavier McKinney Alabama
Notable: "For now, I'm betting on[cornerback Byron] Jones being the odd man out among the guys who have to get paid this offseason. That opens up holes at corner, of course, but also accentuates the need at safety, where Dallas has struggled the past few years. The versatile McKinney, who had three interceptions and four forced fumbles last season, is my top-ranked safety in this class."
Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Network (March 2)
The pick: WR CeeDee Lamb Oklahoma
Notable: "Assuming veteran receiver Amari Cooper departs in free agency, Lamb would be a great fit for Dallas."
Bucky Brooks, NFL Network (March 10)

The pick: LB K'Lavon Chaisson LSU

Lance Zierlein, NFL Network (Jan. 29)
The pick: S Xavier McKinney Alabama
Notable: "Assuming Dallas locks up pending free agent Byron Jones, McKinney would give the 'Boys a versatile, interchangeable safety who can also line up over the slot."
Dane Brugler, The Athletic (March 4)
The pick: CB C.J. Henderson Florida
Notable: "Henderson has a chance to be drafted in the top 10 so this might be the latest he comes off the board. With Byron Jones destined to reach free agency, cornerback shoots near the top of Dallas' draft needs. Henderson needs to be a better playmaker at the catch point, but he is a plus athlete with the size to blanket receivers."
Dan Kadar, SB Nation (March 9)
The pick: CB C.J. Henderson Florida
Notable: "Byron Jones seems like the odd man out in Dallas as the team concentrates on re-signing quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper. At the combine, Henderson locked down the No. 2 cornerback spot in the draft after Jeffry Okudah."
WalterFootball.com (March 10)

The pick: S Grant Delpit LSU
Notable: "The Cowboys tried to land Earl Thomas last offseason, but they haven't been able to upgrade their hole at safety. Perhaps they'll do that with this pick. Grant Delpit is an exceptional talent who was once considered a top-10 lock, but has struggled a bit in 2019."
Final tally
4: Florida CB C.J. Henderson
3: Alabama S Xavier McKinney
1: LSU S Grant Delpit
1: LSU LB K'Lavon Chaisson
1: Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb

The Cowboys have been awarded a fifth-round compensatory pick for losing Cole Beasley last year in free agency. The Cowboys now have seven picks with first-, second-, third- and fourth-round picks, two in the fifth and a seventh round. They do not have a sixth-round pick because of the trade for Robert Quinn from Miami.

NFL still plans to start free agency next week
Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2020, 2:54 PM EDT

When it comes to its plan for free agency in light of current global events, the NFL could be consciously choosing the appearance of tone deafness over strategic benefit, for now.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the "NFL continues to say it's business as usual and new league will start this week." And while Schefter continues not to point out that the league is believed to be waiting until after CBA voting has closed to change its plans (enough believe this that he surely would have heard it by now), Schefter acknowledges that "[m]ultiple team officials express widespread skepticism that the NFL can start its league year this week, when our country is in crisis and so much travel, visits, physicals would have to happen."
The truth continues to be that, if the league will be delaying on Sunday the start of the league year and free agency, it has indeed decided to say nothing about it until after tonight, when voting closing on the new CBA. This will mean that the league wants to avoid a situation where the union will piggyback on a delay in the start of free agency and delay the CBA voting or, possibly, re-do it in light of the dramatically changed circumstances.
As to the CBA vote, there's a belief that the outcome will be close, and that it could go either way. There's also a belief that any votes cast based on the events of the past few days are far more likely to be yes.
Some still think the notion that the league wants the players to vote no is bluffing or posturing or reverse psychology or whatever. The possibility that the league is willingly allowing itself to be painted by many in the media as out of touch in order to increase the chances that the CBA won't be ratified strongly suggests otherwise.
The fact that the league is keeping its cards pressed tightly to the vest only enhances that perception.

So the Pats are offering Tom Brady less than the $23mil he made last year. And we are going to $33mil for a QB that has 29 less playoff wins, been to 9 less Super Bowls and is a 6x less winner.

The apples to oranges applies here, yet I am not sure that Dak is currently superior to Brady. Brady definitely thinks and reacts better under pressure, Dak is better when he is flushed out of his pocket to the right, Brady is solid to either side.

Dak is good on many long throws but Brady has a knack for doing it when it counts

Obviously age and future production come into play - but 33 mil?

Is Dak comparable to Wentz and Goff? Yes

Is are they making around $33M a year? Yes

Did any of them play as well as Dak on a 4th round contract and were allowed to have their contract expire? No

$33M+ is the market and if you play the franchise tag game like Kirk Cousins you are going to pay more than that. As I have said, if you dont think he is market value, tag and trade him because what you are really saying is you don't think he is your guy.

Heck if you are gung ho for Brady, sign him after you trade Dak and draft a young replacement.
