The Cowboys hired Dan Quinn as their defensive coordinator, which means (barring something unforeseen) they're going to be a predominantly single-high safety defense. Only one problem: They don't currently have a starting-caliber free safety to patrol the deep middle of the field. Allen started 12 games for the Falcons last season and 76 during his seven-year stint there, meaning Quinn should know his strengths and weaknesses well. Allen can offer Dallas competent safety play at a low cost.

The Cowboys brought back slot corner Jourdan Lewis, but there's still a hole at one of the outside spots, with Chidobe Awuzie walking in free agency. This selection could reunite former Alabama teammates Surtain and fellow CB Trevon Diggs. Surtain is the most fundamentally sound defensive back in this class. Offensive line is another position to watch -- particularly if Oregon's Penei Sewell is still on the board -- though Dallas could save that for Day 2.

Former Minnesota Vikings special teams captain Jayron Kearse agreed to a one-year deal. Naturally, his acquisition narrows the focus on free agents Damontae Kazee and Malik Hooker, the other two safeties who visited The Star.
