Mel Kiper and Booger McFarland on Micah Parsons

The Dallas Cowboys traded back two spots in the 2021 NFL Draft Thursday night and were still able to land former Penn State 2019 All-American linebacker Micah Parsons at No. 12 overall. One ESPN analyst raved about the pick while another offered a very curious analysis of it.

Booger McFarland, who projected Parsons as a sure-fire top-10 pick prior to the draft, felt the linebacker was the best defensive player available and that the Cowboys were lucky to get him when they did. Meanwhile, Mel Kiper Jr., who projected Parsons at the No. 15 pick, repeatedly dogged Parsons for opting out of the 2020 season.

Here is what McFarland had to say:

"Offenses now are attacking the middle of a field. In Micah Parsons, you have a guy who is big enough size-wise, but he also has the speed to play in the middle of the field and there's nothing I mean nothing he can't do. Want to (run inside) there? I say, OK, diagnose the play, go make the play see ball, hit ball. Tight ends are not gonna block him Micah Parsons is coming downhill. You want to say, OK, I'm going to line you up in the box a little play-action (pass) there. OK, no doubt, I can shed, stack and release, and I can chase down and go make a play.

"He's only played linebacker two years. In high school, he was a defensive end rushing the passer. He can play in coverage, you can blitz him, he can be a thumper coming downhill. There's nothing at the linebacker position that Micah Parsons cannot do. And for the Dallas Cowboys to get the best defensive player in the draft at pick number 12, they've got to be ecstatic."

Kiper, meanwhile, was not necessarily negative about the pick. In fact, he said one of Dallas' biggest problems has been keeping veteran inside linebacker Leighton Vander Esch healthy, and implied the athletic Parsons will be a better option there. But

Throughout ESPN's coverage, he got on Parsons for not playing in 2020, saying he would have likely been a top-5 to top-7 pick had he NOT opted out.

Also wondering if this means we will run a 4-3 more than before/. Seems like our FAs signed kinda lean toward that.

I expect we go out and sign Richard Sherman post draft unless one of the rookies makes a splash.

Right now it would be Diggs and Lewis at CB, NEal and Wilson at S, Parsons, Smith and VanderEsch at the LBs, Gregory and Law at DE plus Galimore and Hill at DTs.

something to consider:

12:19 a.m. As soon as the dust settled on the Micah Parsons pick, thoughts turned toward Leighton Vander Esch.

That's natural any time a first-round pick is used on a current starter's position, but especially so in Vander Esch's case. After all, the NFL deadline to exercise his fifth-year option is approaching on Monday.

To hear it from Cowboys officials, though, the decision to draft Parsons has no bearing on Vander Esch's future.

"I don't think it affects it," said chief operating officer Stephen Jones. "We'll make a decision on Leighton we'll make that decision when the time comes. We've got some discussions to have on that, period."

Vander Esch missed six games last season with various injuries, and he has missed 13 total games over the last two years. If the Cowboys exercise his option, his contract will be extended through the 2022 season. If they don't, he'll be slated to hit free agency next spring.

Parsons may not affect that a decision, but it's still a decision the Cowboys will have to make in the coming days.

Cowboy insider said that if Philly had taken Parsons, Slater would have been their pick.

There's no denying that Parsons has a high ceiling. At 6-foot-3, 246 pounds, he ran a 4.36 40. Parsons led Penn State in tackles in 2018 and 2019 before opting out last year. His athleticism jumps off the screen, and Parsons consistently made highlight plays firing downhill against the run or while rushing the passer. He'll have to prove himself as a defender in man coverage, but Parsons' versatility and explosiveness are attractive. New defensive coordinator Dan Quinn can deploy him in a number of different ways, and Parsons has the chance to have a special career.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys picked up an extra third-round pick by moving down from 10 to 12. Good process, good result.

Sounds like one tough SOB runner. Former LB. When I signed with Texas A&I, the guy in front of me was Don Hardeman who was a 3 time All American at LB, then Steniki converted him to FB in our Veer. That was a man playing against boys.

Great 1st round pick for the Oilers but got spiked his frosh year. Shattered his big toe. Two or so years later the Oilers drafted Earl Campbell and that was that
