Mel Kiper and Booger McFarland on Micah Parsons

The Dallas Cowboys traded back two spots in the 2021 NFL Draft Thursday night and were still able to land former Penn State 2019 All-American linebacker Micah Parsons at No. 12 overall. One ESPN analyst raved about the pick while another offered a very curious analysis of it.

Booger McFarland, who projected Parsons as a sure-fire top-10 pick prior to the draft, felt the linebacker was the best defensive player available and that the Cowboys were lucky to get him when they did. Meanwhile, Mel Kiper Jr., who projected Parsons at the No. 15 pick, repeatedly dogged Parsons for opting out of the 2020 season.

Here is what McFarland had to say:

"Offenses now are attacking the middle of a field. In Micah Parsons, you have a guy who is big enough size-wise, but he also has the speed to play in the middle of the field and there's nothing I mean nothing he can't do. Want to (run inside) there? I say, OK, diagnose the play, go make the play see ball, hit ball. Tight ends are not gonna block him Micah Parsons is coming downhill. You want to say, OK, I'm going to line you up in the box a little play-action (pass) there. OK, no doubt, I can shed, stack and release, and I can chase down and go make a play.

"He's only played linebacker two years. In high school, he was a defensive end rushing the passer. He can play in coverage, you can blitz him, he can be a thumper coming downhill. There's nothing at the linebacker position that Micah Parsons cannot do. And for the Dallas Cowboys to get the best defensive player in the draft at pick number 12, they've got to be ecstatic."

Kiper, meanwhile, was not necessarily negative about the pick. In fact, he said one of Dallas' biggest problems has been keeping veteran inside linebacker Leighton Vander Esch healthy, and implied the athletic Parsons will be a better option there. But

Throughout ESPN's coverage, he got on Parsons for not playing in 2020, saying he would have likely been a top-5 to top-7 pick had he NOT opted out.

Also wondering if this means we will run a 4-3 more than before/. Seems like our FAs signed kinda lean toward that.

I expect we go out and sign Richard Sherman post draft unless one of the rookies makes a splash.

Right now it would be Diggs and Lewis at CB, NEal and Wilson at S, Parsons, Smith and VanderEsch at the LBs, Gregory and Law at DE plus Galimore and Hill at DTs.

something to consider:

12:19 a.m. As soon as the dust settled on the Micah Parsons pick, thoughts turned toward Leighton Vander Esch.

That's natural any time a first-round pick is used on a current starter's position, but especially so in Vander Esch's case. After all, the NFL deadline to exercise his fifth-year option is approaching on Monday.

To hear it from Cowboys officials, though, the decision to draft Parsons has no bearing on Vander Esch's future.

"I don't think it affects it," said chief operating officer Stephen Jones. "We'll make a decision on Leighton we'll make that decision when the time comes. We've got some discussions to have on that, period."

Vander Esch missed six games last season with various injuries, and he has missed 13 total games over the last two years. If the Cowboys exercise his option, his contract will be extended through the 2022 season. If they don't, he'll be slated to hit free agency next spring.

Parsons may not affect that a decision, but it's still a decision the Cowboys will have to make in the coming days.

My projection is that either Richie Grant, the S or Ifeatu Melifonwu, the CB from Stanford will be our pick. I would not be sad if we went with Barmore

wonder if any chance Moehrig drops to us? Or we could use a 3 to move up. He's a bit better than Richie Grant.

We could also wait and see if
Asante Samuel Jr., CB, Florida State (33)
Elijah Molden, CB/S, Washington (37)
drops into our laps

Dane Brugler's projected Mock

2021 NFL mock draft: Tyson Campbell, Javonte Williams headline projections for Day 2
Dane Brugler 1h ago
With the first 32 picks now official, Friday will bring us the next 73 picks on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.
As teams regroup and reset the draft board after Day 1, there are several surprising names still available, which is great news for the teams picking early in the second round. Here's our attempt at projecting where players will land in Rounds 2-3 when the draft begins again at 7 p.m. ET.
ROUND 1 PICKS: Dane Brugler's analysis
GRADES: Sheil Kapadia's report cards
BIG BOARD:
Best available players remaining
Second Round
33. Jacksonville Jaguars Tyson Campbell, CB, Georgia
34. New York Jets Asante Samuel Jr., CB, Florida State
35. Atlanta Falcons Trevon Moehrig, FS, TCU
36. Miami Dolphins Javonte Williams, RB, North Carolina
37. Philadelphia Eagles Creed Humphrey, OC, Oklahoma
38. Cincinnati Bengals Landon Dickerson, OG/C, Alabama
Dickerson's draft projection is tough to peg due to the medicals, but he has first-round talent and would upgrade a major need for Cincinnati.
39. Carolina Panthers Samuel Cosmi, OT, Texas
40. Denver Broncos Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame
41. Detroit Lions Elijah Moore, WR, Ole Miss
42. New York Giants Azeez Ojulari, edge, Georgia
Dave Gettleman is expected to target a pass rusher on Day 2, and as long as the Giants are comfortable with the medicals, Ojulari would be a steal here.
43. San Francisco 49ers Aaron Robinson, CB, UCF
44. Dallas Cowboys Jevon Holland, FS, Oregon
45. Jacksonville Jaguars Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama
46. New England Patriots Jabril Cox, LB, LSU
47. Los Angeles Chargers Elijah Molden, CB, Washington
48. Las Vegas Raiders Richie Grant, FS, UCF
49. Arizona Cardinals Kelvin Joseph, CB, Kentucky
50. Miami Dolphins Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State
51. Washington Football Team Davis Mills, QB, Stanford
52. Chicago Bears Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame
The Bears made a splash by trading up for Justin Fields and didn't need to surrender their second-round pick. Eichenberg should compete for the starting right tackle job.
53. Tennessee Titans Carlos Basham, edge, Wake Forest
54. Indianapolis Colts Walker Little, OT, Stanford
55. Pittsburgh Steelers Quinn Meinerz, OG/C, Wis. Whitewater
56. Seattle Seahawks Levi Onwuzurike, DT, Washington
57. Los Angeles Rams Dillon Radunz, OT, North Dakota State
58. Kansas City Chiefs Dyami Brown, WR, North Carolina
59. Cleveland Browns Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue
A versatile weapon, Moore is short but isn't small, and he offers the electric athleticism to create big plays with the ball in his hands.
60. New Orleans Saints Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M
61. Buffalo Bills Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford
62. Green Bay Packers Jalen Mayfield, OT/G, Michigan
63. Kansas City Chiefs Nick Bolton, LB, Missouri
64. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Josh Myers, OG/C, Ohio State
Third Round
65. Jacksonville Jaguars Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State
66. Minnesota Vikings Joseph Ossai, edge, Texas
67. Houston Texans Terrace Marshall, WR, LSU
The medicals might cause Marshall to slip a bit, which is unfortunate for him but a great value for the Texans in this scenario.
68. Atlanta Falcons Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Memphis
69. Cincinnati Bengals Ronnie Perkins, edge, Oklahoma
70. Philadelphia Eagles Ifeatu Melifonwu, CB, Syracuse
71. Denver Broncos Brady Christensen, OT, BYU
72. Detroit Lions Pete Werner, LB, Ohio State
73. Carolina Panthers Tommy Tremble, TE, Notre Dame
74. Washington Football Team Stone Forsythe, OT, Florida
75. Dallas Cowboys Milton Williams, DT, Louisiana Tech
The Cowboys continue adding talent on defense with Williams, who can essentially grow into the Tyrone Crawford role as a disruptive inside-outside presence.
76. New York Giants Wyatt Davis, OG, Ohio State
77. Los Angeles Chargers Dayo Odeyingbo, DL, Vanderbilt
78. Minnesota Vikings Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, USC
79. Las Vegas Raiders Marlon Tuipulotu, DT, USC
80. Las Vegas Raiders Chazz Surratt, LB, North Carolina
81. Miami Dolphins Baron Browning, LB, Ohio State
82. Washington Football Team Brevin Jordan, TE, Miami (Fla.)
83. Chicago Bears Cameron Sample, edge, Tulane
84. Dallas Cowboys Zech McPhearson, CB, Texas Tech
85. Tennessee Titans Amari Rodgers, WR, Clemson
A Tennessee native, Rodgers would make sense as the slot option in the Titans' scheme due to his receiving skills and chops as a blocker.
86. Minnesota Vikings Divine Deablo, DS, Virginia Tech
87. Pittsburgh Steelers D'Ante Smith, OT, East Carolina
88. Los Angeles Rams Elerson Smith, edge, Northern Iowa
89. Cleveland Browns Alim McNeill, DT, NC State
90. Minnesota Vikings Robert Rochell, CB, Central Arkansas
91. Cleveland Browns Kendrick Green, OG/C, Illinois
92. Green Bay Packers D'Wayne Eskridge, WR, Western Michigan
93. Buffalo Bills Michael Carter, RB, North Carolina
The Bills are looking to add more fireworks to the backfield, and Carter is one of the most elusive running backs in the draft class.
94. Baltimore Ravens Jackson Carman, OT/G, Clemson
95. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa
96. New England Patriots Spencer Brown, OT, Northern Iowa
97. Los Angeles Chargers Nico Collins, WR, Michigan
98. New Orleans Saints Trey Sermon, RB, Ohio State
99. Dallas Cowboys James Hudson, OT/G, Cincinnati
100. Tennessee Titans Jaylon Moore, OT/G, Western Michigan
101. Detroit Lions Jay Tufele, DT, USC
102. San Francisco 49ers Aaron Banks, OG, Notre Dame
103. Los Angeles Rams Drew Dalman, OC, Stanford
104. Baltimore Ravens Andre Cisco, FS, Syracuse
105. New Orleans Saints Tutu Atwell, WR, Louisville

Dane Bugler's take on Parsons in Rd 1

Quote:

12. Dallas Cowboys: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
(Pick from Philadelphia Eagles via Miami Dolphins)
The Cowboys were not happy to see both cornerbacks (Horn and Surtain) drafted with the two picks ahead of them, prompting them to trade back and go to Plan B. And it turns out their back-up plan is Parsons, who will help the Cowboys get faster on defense. The Penn State linebacker played two seasons in college and led the team in tackles both years. What does this mean for Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch in Dallas?

The Athletics take on Parsons:

Quote:

Pick 12, Dallas Cowboys: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
There's no denying that Parsons has a high ceiling. At 6-foot-3, 246 pounds, he ran a 4.36 40. Parsons led Penn State in tackles in 2018 and 2019 before opting out last year. His athleticism jumps off the screen, and Parsons consistently made highlight plays firing downhill against the run or while rushing the passer. He'll have to prove himself as a defender in man coverage, but Parsons' versatility and explosiveness are attractive. New defensive coordinator Dan Quinn can deploy him in a number of different ways, and Parsons has the chance to have a special career.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys picked up an extra third-round pick by moving down from 10 to 12. Good process, good result.

Javonte Williams

Sounds like one tough SOB runner. Former LB. When I signed with Texas A&I, the guy in front of me was Don Hardeman who was a 3 time All American at LB, then Steniki converted him to FB in our Veer. That was a man playing against boys.

Great 1st round pick for the Oilers but got spiked his frosh year. Shattered his big toe. Two or so years later the Oilers drafted Earl Campbell and that was that
