After one of the best seasons by a Cowboys punter in franchise history, Bryan Anger will be back for another go-around.

The veteran agreed to terms on a three-year deal that's worth a reported $9 million.

Special teams coordinator John Fassel said he had admired Anger's play for years and was excited to get the chance to work with him, basically announcing in training camp it would be Anger's job to lose. He not only kept the job but had one of the best seasons in Cowboys history, setting single-season net records of 44.6 yards, tied for fourth-best in NFL history. Anger was named to his first Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro selection.

The Cowboys have now filled two of their three specialist positions in punter and deep snapper after bringing back Anger and Jake McQuaide. They released kicker Greg Zuerlein last week but will likely sign a veteran kicker soon and Zuerlein's return has not been ruled out, albeit for a cheaper price.

Mel Kipers mock:

24. Dallas Cowboys

Tyler Smith, OT/G, Tulsa

The Cowboys will look different in 2022, with Amari Cooper, Randy Gregory, Connor Williams, Cedrick Wilson and La'el Collins among the notable departures. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll be worse, but they do have to plug a couple of holes. I'm not sure an edge rusher makes sense if this is the way the board shakes out could Dallas take a flier on David Ojabo, who tore an Achilles at his pro day last week? but there are a couple of offensive linemen who could play immediately. And with Tyron Smith and Zack Martin both over 30, the Cowboys should reprioritize the line.

Smith could play guard or tackle, and in this scenario he'd slot in to Williams' left guard spot. Zion Johnson is the other possibility, and he could even play some center.

Right now we have $17,828,577 over the cap. They may want to keep that to see who drops like a rock in FA plus we have to have funds for the draft picks

Right now we have to sign RB #3 (Corey Clement did a pretty good job last year), DE Brent Urban (can play DT), 1 LB (if Neal isnt onboard at LB), Kicker, 1 WR, 1CB, 1 S, 1 OG, possibly C and possibly Edge.

At #24, I would be okay with a badass LB, Edge or OG or C

If Wagner doesnt like the teams chasing him, he may wait too long and they run out of money. Then we kick in a couple of contracts and grab him. Wouldnt mind doing that with Honey Badger either

One of last year's successful signings is back for another go-around.

As the free agency period continues, the Cowboys confirmed that they've agreed to a one-year deal with veteran defensive tackle Carlos Watkins.

The move keeps Watkins in place for 2022 after a successful stint as one of last year's better free agency signings.

Watkins was originally drafted by the Houston Texans in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, off the strength of an impressive 10.5-sack season during his senior year at Clemson. He had mixed results in Houston's 3-4 scheme, totaling just 74 tackles and four sacks in four years.

Expectations were low when Watkins signed with the Cowboys, but he pleasantly exceeded them. He started 14 of 17 games on the season, finishing with 32 tackles almost half of his four-year total with the Texans. He also added five tackles for loss, a sack, and of course his 2021 highlight: a 29-yard interception return for a touchdown against New Orleans.

Dallas is still looking for pass-rush help. One option on its radar is Jason Pierre-Paul, who is still a candidate to re-sign with the Bucs but will have options. Pair Pierre-Paul with newly acquired Dante Fowler Jr. and there's your Plan B to signing Randy Gregory.

The Cowboys had big plans for Gregory, who was displeased with the default language in the Cowboys' contract and bolted to Denver. But credit to the Cowboys for pivoting to their young defensive players at the midtier level, retaining pass-rusher Dorance Armstrong and safeties Jayron Kearse and Malik Hooker for less than a combined $16 million per year. Some around the league believe Armstrong has untapped potential as a talented, powerful rusher.

BTB - damn ACLs remind me so much of Jaylon Smith. Surgeries getting better but we may have more important needs. Thought he would be a high 2nd. btw - really like the guy except for the surgeries, Top 5 type player

Quote:

24. Dallas Cowboys: Jameson Williams, WR - Alabama

The Cowboys no longer have Amari Cooper on the roster, and Michael Gallup may not be ready to play at the start of the season, which leaves CeeDee Lamb and newly-signed James Washington as the top two receivers. Jameson Williams was emerging as this draft's top wideout before he tore his ACL in the national title game. He has the speed and route running ability to play both outside and in the slot, which makes him valuable for this offense as they embark on uncertain territory with their receiving corps.

The rest of the BTB draft:

56. Dallas Cowboys: Abraham Lucas, OT - Washington State

Terence Steele is widely expected to be the starter at right tackle after La'el Collins' release, but it won't be handed to him. Abraham Lucas is a long, athletic lineman who seems tailor-made to play right tackle in the NFL and excels as a run blocker. He may not come in and start from day one, but Lucas is a high-ceiling prospect along the offensive line who can provide competition to Steele, who will be a restricted free agent in just a year.

88. Dallas Cowboys: Spencer Burford, iOL - UTSA

Spencer Burford was the first four-star recruit in UTSA history, and naturally became an immediate starter. His first two years were spent at left guard before moving to left tackle, and Burford excelled at both spots. He's long, athletic, and physical at the point of attack. In Dallas, he can immediately compete with Connor McGovern at left guard while being groomed as a replacement for Tyron Smith down the road

129. Dallas Cowboys: Terrel Bernard, LB - Baylor

Unless the Cowboys do something crazy, like sign Bobby Wagner, they're in need of help at linebacker. Terrel Bernard, like the rest of these Baylor Bears, is a highly athletic specimen that fits right into what Dan Quinn looks for. At 6'1" and 222 pounds, Bernard is considered undersized, hence his being available this late. But Quinn prefers his off-the-ball linebackers to be leaner and more explosive, which Bernard is. He may be a special teamer early on, but Bernard would pair nicely with Micah Parsons in the long run.

155. Dallas Cowboys (from CLE): Thomas Booker, iDL - Stanford

Thomas Booker had an outstanding combine performance that got completely overshadowed by the two Georgia interior defensive linemen. That doesn't change the fact that Booker - with great length and exceptional explosion measurables for his position - is exactly what Quinn looks for here. Stanford used him all over the place, but Booker can find a role as a rotational run stopper in the middle of this defensive line with plenty of juice as a pass rusher.

167. Dallas Cowboys: Cole Turner, TE - Nevada

Blake Jarwin's release created a hole at the TE2 position, especially considering how much Kellen Moore liked to use 12 personnel last year. Cole Turner would fit well in this offense as a secondary tight end, as he's a solid in-line blocker and has very soft hands with solid athleticism. He'd have to beat out Sean McKeon and Jeremy Sprinkle first, but Turner has the potential to do just that.

176. Dallas Cowboys: Amare Barno, EDGE - Virginia Tech

Amare Barno is such a curious prospect. He only played two years at Virginia Tech after transferring from Butler Community College and managed 10 sacks in those two years as a Hokie. Barno didn't seem to be on anyone's radar until the combine, when he led all edge players in the 40-yard dash and broad jump. Barno is an incredibly raw but also extremely athletic player, so it's entirely possible another team takes him well before 176, banking on his upside. But if he's still here, Barno's combination of length (34" arms!) and athleticism would make him an irresistible developmental piece, especially with Dante Fowler only on a one-year deal.

178. Dallas Cowboys: Chris Paul, iOL - Tulsa

Three offensive linemen in one draft? Well, it's that much of a priority for Dallas. Taken earlier in this draft, Lucas projects at right tackle while Burford is an early fit at left guard with potential to move out to left tackle when Tyron Smith is no more. Consider Chris Paul the eventual replacement for Burford at left guard. Paul, a four-year starter at Tulsa, possesses a lot of positive traits for the position. Weighing in at 328 pounds with nearly 34" arms, he has great size to go with a motor that saw him tie for the second-fastest 40 time among all offensive linemen at the combine. Pass protection is a big area of improvement for Paul, which makes it all the better to take him as a depth guy being groomed for a starting role.

193. Dallas Cowboys (from CLE): Damarion Williams, CB - Houston

The Cowboys opted to sign both Malik Hooker and Jayron Kearse to two-year deals to stick around, but that shouldn't mean Dallas is done at safety. Donovan Wilson is entering the final year of his rookie contract, too. Damarion Williams, whose scouting report can be found here, is an appealing prospect who seems primed to make a successful transition to safety in the NFL. He can also play in the slot, where incumbent starter Jourdan Lewis has just two years left on his current deal too. Williams offers versatility and upside at a position that the team doesn't have long term stability at right now.

After keeping Dalton Schultz in place with the franchise tag, the Cowboys continue to work on their tight end depth.

The club has re-signed Jeremy Sprinkle, bringing a veteran backup into the fold for 2022.

This isn't a move that's going to move the needle, but it's one the front office prioritized at a thin position. Having already released Blake Jarwin last week, the Cowboys wanted to make sure they had a veteran player behind Schultz, as their only other options are Sean McKeon and Ian Bunting.

Sprinkle's main role comes as both a blocker and a special teamer. He averaged roughly 15% of the snaps on offense last year, only exceeding 20 snaps in three of 17 games. He did, however, play 269 special teams snaps last season.

This is a fairly standard Cowboys deal. Sprinkle is entering his sixth NFL season and can provide the team with an option in multiple-tight end sets, as well as a useful special teamer. But the terms of the deal won't prevent them from seeking to upgrade the position in the NFL draft next month.

Clement is so very average. No way on earth I'm resigning him, even for the vet minimum. Get a guy in the 6th round, like Ebner or someone, who can play ST, catch the ball and run…and on the very cheap.

The Cowboys are adding veteran coach Brian Schottenheimer in a consultant role to help assist both sides of the ball.

The former Jaguars passing game coordinator will serve as a consultant on Mike McCarthy's staff but will be able to help both Kellen Moore and Dan Quinn.

Schottenheimer is the son of longtime head coach Marty Schottenheimer, who gave McCarthy his first NFL job with the Chiefs back in 1993 as a quality control coach. In 1998, McCarthy and Brian Schottenheimer worked together for one season on the Chiefs' staff.

Ben McAdoo, now the Panthers' offensive coordinator, also worked as a consultant for the Cowboys last season, helping both the offensive and defensive staff prepare for opponents on a weekly basis. He was elevated to an assistant coaching role for one game against the Saints after the Cowboys placed several coaches, including head coach Mike McCarthy, in COVID-19 protocols that week.

Man, If the Cowboys and Oilers played at different times, best believe we watched Warren Moon, guy was balling out for a while there.

Never really thought of the Oilers as a rival.
Winning by cheating is just as impressive as winning fairly, probably even more so. Your opponent was better than you in every way, and you beat them with your brain.

Zero hope for Wagner to us know unless we change a lot of existing contracts, but ya never know:

Shortly after Bobby Wagner was released by the Seahawks earlier this month, word surfaced that other teams in the NFC West were interested in signing the veteran linebacker.

Nothing materialized immediately, but it looks like things may be developing with one of those teams. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Wagner is visiting the Rams on Wednesday. It's the first known visit for Wagner since his release.

The report adds that there's mutual interest in a deal that would fit with the Rams' history of big-name additions to the roster in recent seasons.
