Jaylon Smith's journey back began 631 days ago at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

As Smith lay on the turf, his knee severely injured in his final game at Notre Dame, Ezekiel Elliott running back for Ohio State came over to check on his friend.

The players had met through all-star camps in high school and played on the same All-American team. Now they're NFL teammates and part of the Cowboys' talented young core.

"I went down and he came over and basically just told me that he was with me," Smith reflected on that Jan. 2016 Fiesta Bowl game. "Now we're teammates and all is well."

That moment launched Smith's inspirational comeback from torn knee ligaments and nerve damage. Now healthy, he leads the Cowboys in team-credited tackles (23) through two games from the starting middle linebacker spot.

Jermaine Gresham (ribs) is questionable for Monday night's Week 3 game against the Cowboys. Gresham was held out last week, but the Cardinals expect him to return after practicing on a limited basis. With John Brown sidelined and J.J. Nelson dealing with a hamstring issue, he could have an expanded pass-game role.

J.J. Nelson (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Week 3 against Dallas. Nelson got in three straight limited practices despite an early week hamstring injury. He's on track to play, but can't be trusted with a Monday night matchup.

John Brown (quad) has been ruled out for Week 3. This was expected after Brown didn't practice all week. The Cardinals will continue to go with Larry Fitzgerald, J.J. Nelson (questionable, hamstring), and Jaron Brown in three-receiver sets.

Cardinals DC James Bettcher suggested ILB Deone Bucannon (ankle) isn't a lock to return this week. This conflicts with comments from coach Bruce Arians. Bucannon is trending toward playing after practicing on a limited basis, but he's likely going to be a game-time decision. The Cardinals are expected to put Bucannon on a snap count if active.

Inactive for the Cowboys are QB Cooper Rush, RB Darren McFadden, CB Nolan Carroll, CB Chidobe Awuzie, LB Anthony Hitchens, OG Jonathan Cooper, and DE Charles Tapper.

Cardinals declared LG Mike Iupati, LT D.J. Humphries, ILB Deone Bucannon, QB Blaine Gabbert, WR John Brown, RB D.J. Foster, and DT Xavier Williams inactive for Week 3 against the Cowboys.

John Wetzel and Alex Boone will get the starts at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Bucannon isn't ready to come back from an ankle injury. Brown remains week to week with his quad strain. J.J. Nelson will be the No. 2 WR.
