The Oakland Raiders claimed defensive tackle Brian Price off waivers, thwarting the Cowboys' plan to bring him back to the 53-man roster and place Datone Jones on injured reserve. The Cowboys search for a backup nose tackle continues.

With the release of Dan Bailey, the Cowboys have $19.3 million in cap space, according to ESPN Stats & Information. There appears to be no news regarding a potential trade for Earl Thomas and early talks with Cole Beasley on an extension have not progressed. The Cowboys could carry over most of that cap room into 2019 with DeMarcus Lawrence set to be a free agent and Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott eligible to sign a long-term deals for the first time.

The "Big Step" That Got Rico Gathers On The Roster

Rob Phillips

FRISCO, Texas Rico Gathers' first day on the Cowboys' 53-man roster didn't go at all as planned.
Hours before Saturday's final cuts, news broke that Gathers had been arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession in the Frisco area. He reportedly posted bond and was released from jail just as the Cowboys were making their final roster decisions.
Ultimately, Garrett said the incident wasn't enough to keep Gathers off the roster. The team had seen too much progress from the developmental tight end since drafting him in the seventh round in 2016 out of Baylor, where he starred in basketball, not football.
"He's grown and developed as a tight end," Garrett said. "He's doing more of the things that a tight end needs to do better. Some of the things are coming more naturally to him. He's getting better at some of the things he hasn't had that much experience. He had a good training camp and a good preseason.
"One of the things that was impressive things about him was, even though he was learning, you could tell he was thinking and he made aggressive mistakes. He played fast. His inexperience didn't cause him to slow down. I think that's a big step for a player. He got better and better and better."

Garrett and Gathers have exchanged texts about the tight end's arrest, an incident that was "poor judgment on his part," Garrett said. The players get back to work Tuesday in preparation for Sunday's season opener at Carolina.
The Cowboys kept four tight ends on the roster: projected starter Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin, fourth-round pick Dalton Schultz and Gathers. Can Gathers find his way onto the 46-man game-day roster?
"That's another thing that happened with Rico this year - I think he improved on special teams to the point where we started to be able to trust him a little bit more," Garrett said. "That will be a big factor for him and for all the guys (in consideration)."

Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim is listed as the starter on the team's depth chart.
Dallas was always expected to take a committee approach at tight end. Blake Jarwin played more total snaps than Swaim in the preseason, but it's the latter who was graded above-average in pass-blocking at Pro Football Focus. Rico Gathers, who avoided being released following an arrest for marijuana possession Friday evening, is listed ahead of rookie Dalton Schultz. Gathers receiving heavy usage in the red zone is the only chance this group produces anything for fantasy purposes.

Cowboys RG Zack Martin (knee) said he "feels great" and has experienced "no problems."
"I feel ready to go," Martin said. "After the first few days, I felt good and have been back out there, no problems." Martin has stayed insistent he'll play in Week 1. He returned to practice last week and is currently on track to suit up against the Panthers in Dallas' season opener. C Travis Frederick (illness) remains uncertain for the season despite making the 53-man roster.

Then Seattle is crazy. He'll walk after this year and they will get a third round compensatory pick (essentially a 4th rounder).

Seattle has lost so much, I'm not surprised at the desperation.

Seahawks FS Earl Thomas has ended his holdout and will report to the team on Wednesday.
The Cowboys tried hard to acquire Thomas, offering a third-rounder before upping it to a second-rounder, but the Seahawks were'n't having it. Thomas expressed his feeling of disrespect from the Seahawks on Instagram on Wednesday but will otherwise report and play out the final year of his deal. We think it's still possible a trade is worked out at some point this season.

Why would that result mean that Seattle is unwise in keeping Thomas for this year. Perhaps Seattle reasonably believes that his year of service in 2018 is worth the sum of (a) his 2018 salary and (b) the difference in value between a second and a fourth rounder.

It's just a matter of opinion. Seattle appears to be a team in rebuild mode, at least on defense. They got rid of Sherman and Michael Bennett. Chancellor and Avril retired. So I would think they would want to stockpile draft picks. And a fourth round pick is the best they could get for Thomas when he leaves which is based on the size of the contract he gets from another team. If he gets hurt or has a bad season and doesn't garner a big salary in free agency, they might get a much lower pick. But if they believe he's worth more to them than the market is offering, then they should keep him.

I think it's trying to say that they could retain most of that cap space by avoiding signing any large, cap-hitting, contracts this season. Stick with the status quo, so to speak.

Lions waived DE Anthony Zettel.

It's a surprise after Zettel had 6.5 sacks in a starting role last year, but he wasn't a fit in a Detroit scheme that's expected to have more 3-4 fronts. 26-year-old Zettel should resurface on waivers.

Vander Esch dealt with injuries throughout OTAs/training camp. The missed time could limit his early season snaps, but Vander Esch is on track to play in Week 1.

Do you think the recent signings of Aaron Donald (Rams; 6 years, $135 million) and Khalil Mack (Bears; 6 years, $141 million) will have much of an effect on what DeMarcus Lawrence's agent will be asking for his client? Keep in mind Dak and Zeke will have to be re-signed soon. - JOE TREJO / SANTA ANA, CA

Bryan: I would say that Mack's contract will, due to the position that he plays. Everyone knows what's at stake here, so depending how he plays is the direction that the front office will go.

Rob: To some degree, absolutely it'll have an effect. Donald and Mack just reset the market on what an elite defensive lineman should be paid. But we've said this before: It all goes back to the type of season Lawrence has. If he gets 15 sacks and makes the Pro Bowl again, he'll ask for a monster deal. The Cowboys knew franchising him this year could lead to that type of situation.

Ouch... could have been our 1st rounder;

Bucs first-round DT Vita Vea (calf) did not practice Wednesday.

Vea has been sidelined over a month, and he does not seem particularly close to getting back on the practice field. He is at best doubtful to face the Saints on Sunday.

Yikes! Mack combined with Donald? Methinks Raiders didnt want Mack anywhere closeby;

Rams COO Kevin Demoff said the team offered the Raiders an "aggressive package" for Khalil Mack before Oakland traded him to the Bears.
The Rams are working wonders with the salary cap this offseason, and if they'd have landed Mack, we're not sure this team could be stopped. It's fun to think about, but obviously didn't happen. Demoff said the Raiders turned down the Rams' offer because Oakland thought the Rams' picks would be too low in the order. For all the acquisitions and contracts the Rams have handed out this year, they still have a ton of cap room in 2019 and beyond. Edge rusher is truly the only real weakness on this roster, but they make up for it with Aaron Donald and the secondary.
