As a player, Dana Holgorsen played for Iowa Wesleyan where Mike Leach was the offensive coordinator from 1991-1992.

Holgorsen first coached alongside Leach at Valdosta State as the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and special teams coach. Leach was the offensive coordinator.

When the Pirate took over at Texas Tech, Holgorsen would join as the inside wide receivers coach. Holgorsen worked his way up to co-offensive coordinator before leaving for Houston to be the offensive coordinator.
