I would imagine they offered a forced retirement and he said no. I think Mack's statements that he didn't intend to retire at the start of the season were him speaking his honest mind.

West Virginia has fired Neal Brown, sources confirm to @YahooSports, as 247Sports/CBSSports reported. Brown just completed his sixth season at the school. He was 37-35. His buyout is around $9.5-10 million.

I feel bad for Neal Brown. By all accounts, a model citizen, a good guy and someone who cared a lot.

No, I wouldn't say I am one who believes we can get anyone we want.
We already went through this in the early 2000s when Hackett had to go, and we didn't exactly have coaches living up for the job.
We struck gold with CPC, but I remember a lot of fans who weren't totally enamored by the choice.
Then came Kiffin and Sark. And there were fans who weren't overly enamored by these two either.
It think when Sark came down from Washington they were calling him 7 win Sark. And USC wanted more.

So, I don't believe that SC could just drop CLR and get whoever we want.
USC is not an easy place to coach, and a lot of coaches don't want any part of it.
I think we're stuck with him for a while. I just hope he can turn things around.

Just like BU, SC had some close losses. If things swing just a bit the other way, or if CLR makes calls to close out the game that solidify and hold the lead, our record might look a lot better. We only lost to #3 PSU by 3 points. And we were holding with ND for quite a long time. And there was no reason for losing to Maryland or Minnesota. And we even kept it close with Michigan.

Coach took a lot of grief though for his play calling in games that could have been won.

The concern is the lack of improvement in much of that play calling as the season progressed.

I'm curious these ADs who give a great extension to a HC after a great year in year 1 or 2, are given grief here. Isnt hiring a guy after one year on his current job still directly running off the fuel left in the tank from his predecessor a worse move?

Sumrall had two really good years at Troy before his single season at Tulane.

In three years as a head coach, he has a 32-7 overall record, which is pretty damn impressive.

There are never any guarantees with coaching hires, but I would be excited if a program I rooted for was to hire him. I think he's a really good young coach.
