Saw the 60 Minutes segment tonight on Indiana's National Championship Football team. They went from worst to first in three seasons. That could have been us had our Regents decided not to blow up Baylor Football.

It could not have been us because Art Briles had already been here for seven years and at no point did we get to first (in the nation). Look, I really enjoyed the Art Briles years, but there is just a lot of revisionist history around him. He was not Bear Bryant (and he wasn't Curt Cignetti, for that matter).

Bryant, no. Cignetti, no. However, in ALL of Baylor football history, there was never a match for the excitement, confidence, euphoria that was generated amongst our fans than in his era. His approach to offense was hard for defenses then. Probably today the elite teams would do a better job defending it; however, victories, excitement, and confidence would still be hanging around. Tough to deny.

No doubt, he was the most successful coach in Baylor history (you can argue overall legacy with Grant Teaff), and it was definitely the most exciting era. But in terms of him leading us to national championships or having us as a perennial top 5 team, that did not happen and I don't think was set to happen. We would have stayed near the top of the Big 12, but it's a big jump from "perennial Big 12 contender" to "national title contender." We never even came close to pulling off what Cignetti just pulled off at Indiana.

And I think winning heals all. Art Briles was able to have us win consistently in the Big 12. But I got just as much enjoyment out of the 2021 season as I did the 2013 or 2014 seasons. This idea that winning was somehow more fun because it was Art Briles leading us to victories is weird to me. But a lot of fans on this board seem to feel that way.

Art had the good fortune of following Dave Robert's and his 4-18 record and 2-14 Big 12. Then it got even worse with Kevin Steele who posted a 9-36 overall & a horrific 1-31 in Big 12

He was helped along by Guy Morriss who put up an 18-40 overall and a 7-33 Big 12

Baylor fans weren't on life support, we were dead and buried. Art started digging us up in 2008 & 2009 with back-to-back 4-8 seasons overall and 3-13 Big 12. 2010 was the turning point with a 7-6 season, our first winning season in 15 years!

To go from 15 years of embarrassment to going 10-3, 8-5, 11-2, 11-2 & 10-3 was more success than Baylor folks had had ever seen before.

The best season in Baylor history, 2021 with a Sugar Bowl win and a 12-2 record with 5 wins over ranked opponents, gets lost after going 17-21 afterwards.

Eh. I think you're wrong. That 2015 team was really good, but there was a long way to go before the natty. We've seen lots of "unstoppable" teams lose in the playoff era.

But also, the original post I'm responding to was saying that Indiana "could have been us." Which is just not true because Curt Cignetti won a national championship in year 3 at Indiana and Art Briles was at Baylor for 7 years and didn't. It's just a fact.

Nick Saban may disagree with you. He was concerned enough that he made a big stink about the HUNH offense being dangerous for the players. Of course he only griped about it until he adopted it. Player safety be damned, I guess.

We saw what a player like Cam Newton or Jameis Winston could do. They were the difference between their team winning a national championship and a team that couldn't even win their conference. Someone like that comes around every now and again, and that was Seth Russell.

Bryce Petty was 1 dimensional, and teams learned to scheme around him. Russell was a true 2 dimensional player, and there are no college teams who can defend that when you have a good O-line.

We had NFL players on defense, pro bowlers even. We were good on all sides of the ball.

No doubt that that team had potential to go the playoff, and may have even been good enough to compete for a national title. Yet again, I will say, Cignetti won a title in year 3. We are talking about a team that "may" have been good enough to win it in year 6. it's just not the same.

Edit: Seth Russell, while a great quarterback, who was on pace to have an exceptional (Heisman qualifying) year, was not Cam Newton. Full stop. He might have been Jameis, but we even saw Jameis get pushed around in the playoff 2014 when their team graduated a bunch of the supporting cast. Also, prior to the Iowa State game where Russell got hurt, while Seth's numbers were awesome, we hadn't played the toughest teams on our schedule yet. I think he would have held up fine against them, but you certainly can't crown him as Cam Newton 2.0 based on that. Touch grass.

While I don't want to sign up for a new streaming service I will see if someone throws it up on YouTube so I can watch it live. If not, I'll just watch highlights or a replay. I am curious to see what CAB's team looks like.

With NIL ruining the competitive balance of the Big 12 (and P4 football in general) the lower levels may be more interesting than they would have been under the old college football model.

Bottom line I like CAB and I like his offensive style of football. For me it is entertaining although I understand that others just do not care. To each his own.

Anyone who watched Baylor knew the 2015 team before Russell was injured was unstoppable. They were going to the national championship with a chance to win it all.

For the same reasons Cam Newton won a championship at Auburn.

Russell was simply too good and too balanced to be stopped. We had a team with NFL talent on both sides of the ball. We had a senior OL.

Double Bull!

That's like me saying, "oh if we had not thrown 4 interception, lost 2 fumbles and drove to the 6, 22 and 24 yard lines and missed all 3 field goals because our kicker was out injured we would have been playing for the National Championship."

The 2015 team lost 3 conference games, finished 4th in the Big 12 letting the worst Texas Longhorn team in modern history embarrass us in Waco.

If I remember correctly Arthur tried to go through that season with Stidham, Johnson, Russell & some kid named Bennema. Johnson was not a QB and did Bennema ever take a snap? Regardless, our 2 QBs were emulating battering rams lowering their heads and trying to run over defenses when we all knew we were a 2 QB team.

We then tried to have Johnson winging the ball downfield in a howling storm vs. TCU, a team with a couple of freshmen starting on the Toad defense. It took until the Russell Jock Strap Bowl before the light bulb came on and we steam rolled UNC. We could have done that to OU, TCU & Texas had we just tried.

6-3 in conference play, regardless of QB injuries is not championship material.
