OL surprised me. Exceeded my expectations because I thought they would get dominated and they didn't. Receiving corp is gonna be good, particularly Freeman. Not sure how to assess Lagway because he looked really good to start and then the ankle injury happened. Even then he had some good zip throws, which had to be tough pushing off that ankle. Gotta improve greatly on his soft touch passes but maybe that was ankle related? Main thing that worries me with him is the same thing since I saw him in high school -- turnover prone and not the greatest field vision. We have a really good power runner with great field vision and the ability to make tacklers miss (Pendergrass). What I don't see is any back with an explosively quick first step that could break one.

Defense? I give you a standing ovation. For the first time since Rhule's guys departed I saw players in position for almost the entire game to make plays and good coaching usually does that. Thank you, Klanderman and staff.

No moral victories, but we did look like the better team for most of that game, which I hope bodes well for Big 12 play.

The good news is that this defense will keep us in games this season. As long as Dave's decisions, Spav's play calling, or offense's execution doesn't **** it up

And their QB last year was on the Heisman shortlist after an all timer against Baylor before people realized Baylor sucked.

Dave is not a winner. In the most literal sense, he's just not somebody that wins close games. I know Auburn gets the benefit of the doubt for being in the SEC, but they are not a good team. Positive takeaway is that we look improved from last year, but our schedule is also tougher. Methinks we can probably pull out six wins with a bit of injury luck. That of course will be enough to bring David back….

It was kind of a Jeckyl/Hyde performance. Having a bum ankle didn't help.

A few thoughts

First -- those announcers were just not good. They got so many things wrong you'd think we were listening to John Morris.

Positives:
* Defensive play was much better
* One thing that got almost no mention -- we clearly were getting great results from the defensive backs. Several of those sacks/scrambles were clearly coverage sacks. The QB had a lot of time before the pocket collapsed. Plus, they got three INTs
* Lagway shows quality leadership and can make some good throws.
* We do have at least one stud receiver.

Negatives:
* not sure we can trust the FG kicker
* I don't hate all of Dave's gambling, but when you're down 10-7 late in the 3rd, you kick the dang FG. I'm surprised we came back from that.
* Lagway continues to seem injury prone. And needs to develop better touch on short throws
* Ultimately, I just don't trust Dave's coaching

While I don't think Auburn is all that good, they are better than a lot of the teams we play this year. I just don't want to have a mediocre season and keep the dude.

This is really the issue. We're well past the point of moral victories being acceptable.

I saw lots of things from this team that encouraged me, but at the end of the day an L is an L. And now we've got to win basically every toss-up in Big 12 play.

Apparently, he was a disaster in camp, and his first attempt today certainly bolstered that perception.

They didn't score 0 points. Offense moved the ball easily most of the game, defense looked tremendously improved over last year, and they showed much better than all the haters told us all summer they would. I stand by my assessment, the BU team I watched today looked much better than a 2or 3 win team.

Don't forget injuring himself and fumbling.

This is exactly what UF warned us about:
1) Injury Prone
2) Shows flashes of greatness
3) Makes horrible decisions that negate the greatness

The Lagway experience.

Hope he gets better throughout the year.

A lot of stuff looked better. Some of it looked similar to what we've become used to.

But it's the first game against an opponent that we don't even know whether they are actually good or not. I think they had the same record as Baylor last season, starting over with a new head coach and a lot of turnover.

We still don't know that much, other than the defense looked far more competent, and elements of the offense were encouraging.

Too many questions still left to be answered.

No doubt that was dog ugly but if you're ready to give up on your FG kicker as a coach in the 1st game of the year because he missed his first attempt then you should fire whoever is responsible for the kicking game and consider firing yourself as head coach because it implies the position was completely misassessed and the talent level misevaluated at that position in both Spring practice and a month of pre-season practices. It's difficult for me to believe the kid shanked every FG in practice and yet we put him in the game as our FG kicker. Surely if he was that undependable in practice and we had no confidence in him, we would have gone with someone else.

EDITED TO ADD: Just saw your other post that said he was a disaster in camp. Didn't know that. That explains a lot more, but although I know we lost Hawkins to Ohio St unexpectedly surely there was someone who could have competed with him in preseason practices? I guess not if that's who we rolled out. Yikes.

I think Auburn is a pretty mediocre SEC team. But mediocre SEC teams recruit at a much higher level than we do. So I do find it encouraging that we didn't lose the physical battle to the same degree today that we did last year.

Today's game was a matchup of equals. They just made one more play than we did.

That's what I noticed a lot. Tough throws he made a lot of good throws. Short tosses were often terrible. Maybe that's partly about his foot, but his easy touch passes were just not good.

His touch throws leave much to be desired. But he's got a lot of tools, and he showed a lot of grit today. Hopefully he'll stay healthy and continue to improve the more experience he gains in this offense.
