The Elite of course. I'm thinking the 86-91 version. Particularly the late 80s. It had just been newly renovated and reopened around the tail end of 85 or beginning of 86 by Sammy Citrano who now has Georges. The Elite was great and always packed during this era.

The Elite I was referring to was late sixties, open 24 hours for late night studying over a hot turkey sandwich, open-faced. Greeted by Maitre 'd, Tommy Bakos who had a plastic hand and owned dozens of rent houses around Baylor. Waffle fried potatoes.
It was the "hot turkey with melted cheese".....and it was awesome. Many times a midnight snack

Little River Cafe (I think the name was. A few miles out of town. Pretty spot and great catfish)

Trippy Mexican food place about halfway to Temple. It had this cave like acid trip interior that looked like it was made from painted asbestos.

Casa Ole was pretty bad but always had buy one/get one coupons in the lariat
And that walk in and order steakhouse (not Heitmillers) out towards Connolly Golf Course. Huge steak/potato/cold beer at bargain prices.....Lone Star maybe?
And don't forget Chelsea Street Pub at the Mall....not for the food so much as for their happy acceptance of fake ID's!!

I ate at the Mexican place. Not half bad. And, I believe it was actually in Temple. In the same parking lot as the Dodge dealer (back then it was Ira Young).

There was a place out in Woodway in Crossroads called Snuffy's that had a great breakfast and even better burgers.

I also liked Zapata's when it was around. Unique salsa and great tortillas.

Miss the Elite on the Circle. Grew up playing Off Road at that place.

Barely remember the Hickory Stick, but it was good.

Cant believe I forgot Leslie's. Damn good chicken. Seeing the big chicken sign made you know you were about to have a good day.

You're thinking Wayne Shirley's in Little River. Wayne later was the name behind the big restaurant in Lorena. The Little River location shut down after the wrong people found out Wayne was getting cheese and other commodities intended for Temple ISD.

The Mexican place in Temple was El Cha Cho. The papier-mch interior did not meet building codes. But the constantly served sopapillas were great.

No love for Archie's hamburgers for 29 cents in the late 80's?

Yeah. It was bad, but a starving college student is always looking for a bargain.

Oso burrito on LaSalle was amazing. $1.25 for a gigantic burrito in 89.

There are two places from the mid 2000s that were just lightning in a bottle and were so glorious.

Burger Barn -- this was at 17th and Colcord across from the old Providence hospital. Best burger I've ever had bar none. Sweet husband and wife who baked their own homemade jalapeo cheese bread buns every morning. Place also had a stage for live music. Have mercy. They left for Austin and it turned into Beatniks, was not the same.

Doobie's Cajun Wings -- little hole in the wall Cajun place off Sanger very close to Lake Air. Run by the most coonass fella named Doobie, his Cajun killer wings and hot dipped corn would make you contemplate your own existence in the world. So good.

Miss both these places tremendously.

There was a burrito place on 5th I believe in the early 2000's when we were at Baylor and I think it was called Baja Burrito. Kind of a pre-chipotle/freebird's type place. It was only there a year or two but we really liked it.

I watched Super Bowl XXXIX (2005 -- Pats/Eagles) at Baja Burrito, they were giving away free burritos that Sunday for people who showed up, was pretty good.

The proper method is to get brown gravy on your mashed potatoes, and cream gravy on your CFS. Then you cut a bite of CFS and scoop some gravy smothered taters onto the bite of CFS. Heavenly
